Chapter 33: Frida

Chapter Thirty-Three – Frida

Before Laurel could finish speaking, two maids jumped before Sorren. She recognized them as warriors under Valkyrie, the best warrior in Green Valleys.

Valkyrie was also the daughter of the Lead that took over from her mother so Laurel had seen her a few times. She was older but never bullied her like other people did.

A warrior shot out her claws targeting Sorren’s neck while the other warrior pulled Laurel away from him.

"Leave the Princess alone!" Valkyrie shouted. Laurel was stunned. What were they trying to do?

Sorren had an annoyed expression. "Huh? I didn’t see you guys here earlier. When did you get here? Lia..."

A maid, Lia, walked out and bowed at him. "Four wolfesses were brought today by Beta Cade. It seems they’ve been working at his quarters."

Sorren sighed. Cade would be staying at the palace while the Alpha wasn’t around so he might have brought out the troublesome maids in his quarters.

He’d taken the strong female warriors to tame them but to release these ones, it’s possible he’s tired of them.

"Well then, have her." Sorren began walking away. "I was bringing her here anyway. Stay well, Princess."

Laurel exhaled in relief when he left completely. Thankfully that didn’t turn to a fight. She’d feel totally terrible if the warriors gets hurt because of her.

It was a new feeling to be protected by someone. Since Sorren, no one had tried protecting her.

"Your highness, did he touch you? Did he force himself on you?" Valkyrie asked with a menacing aura.

Laurel looked down. Indeed, she wasn’t warrior ranked.

Valkyrie was probably on her way to being the new Lead Warrior after her father. Before her, Laurel felt she should watch her words or get beaten up.

"I’m okay, Valkyrie. He transferred me here, to the maid quarters because he was tired of asking the guards to watch me."

It would be too soon to use the ’Sigma is my mate’ now.

She looked up and felt relieved when Valkyrie’s aura was less menacing. She turned to the girl who answered Sorren. "Lia, right? Are you his informant here?"

Laurel turned to the girl. Lia? That’s one of Lena’s friends, wasn’t it? She had a girl who used to be around her. Vista, wasn’t it?

Lia kept her head down. "I just tell him what he needs to know. I don’t want to work for scary people like that."

She might sound humble but definitely not scared. Laurel frowned, feeling uneasy with her. She looked around her.

The maids there looked distant but not in a dangerous way. She could live peacefully with them. Especially with Valkyrie here.

She found an empty room to stay at. The room was small with two bed at each end and a take in the middle. The wall’s paint had almost peeled off.

Supposedly, Laurel had a roommate before but the girl ’wasn’t around’. There was a sad countenance in the maid that said it. It made Laurel feel there was more to the story.

"Okay, Elma. Time to train. We have a new place to grow now and Valkyrie is here so we should do what we can." She told her wolf.

"I haven’t seen Frida yet but whatever. Let’s do what we can." Elma agreed.

The door to her room opened and Lia stepped inside. Laurel had a small frown. She didn’t feel very comfortable with the vibe the girl was giving out.

"Sorry, I didn’t know you were in here. I wanted to clear out the room of the former owner." Lia bowed.

"No issue. Oh, I’m taking that bed so you take the other." Laurel pointed. "Where’s she though? And where’s Vista?"

Lia froze. "Y-You knew Vista?"

"Yeah, you two were friends with Lena, she was my maid in waiting. Lena seemed fond of you two." Laurel said.

Lia’s back was facing Laurel so she couldn’t see the girl’s facial expression. "This was Vista’s room."

Laurel couldn’t unhear how Lia had used ’knew’ also. "Oh really. Was Vista killed?"

"Y-Yes." Lia grabbed the bed and a bag. "Excuse me."

Laurel watched her leave. It’s obvious something troubled her, something beyond whatever happened to Vista.

Her earlier gesture with Sorren, and even how he knew her name replayed in Laurel’s head. Maybe it was connected with Sorren, that crazy guy.

By evening, she went out to find Valkyrie. Her training should start immediately if she wanted to make progress. She also yet to know the meal schedule of the quarters.

Her wolf came to the surface. "Is food all you care about? We are yet to be given a task to do around here."

"With Jade and Cade not on my neck, I’d make use of the free time. Food is essential for me to grow strong too." She replied.

A object was thrown at her direction, from the left, but Laure missed it by jumping back. The object thrown was a small clay pot. She snapped her head at the culprit.

A tall red-haired girl stood up from a table. "Lau...rel! I am surprised that the latest scum I have to deal with it’s you."

A shiver ran down Laurel’s spine before she forced a smile. "Bi...tch, I found you. Frida Faraday."

The girl’s face contorted to a frown, she raised a brow. "D-Did you just call me a bitch? Wow!"

Laurel faced her squarely. "Only a bitch and a spoilt brat would dare address her princess as a ’scum’. Frida, you better learn respect now before it’s too late."

"Huh?" Frida marched to her. "Learn respect? For you? You aren’t a princess anymore, you know?

As she got closer, Laurel felt her resolve diminishing.

If Valkyrie had the aura of a Lead Warrior because of her father, then Frida had the aura of a Beta wolf because of her father. How could she go against such a wolfess?

Frida stood before Laurel who was now looking down. "Hey, look up. I’m talking to you."

She pulled Laurel’s jaw and made their eye meet. "The one who should be watching their mouth is you. Scum."

Laurel could feel Elma threatening to get control but there was no use fighting now. If Frida shifts then it’d take Valkyrie or the other guards to separate them.

It wouldn’t be a good sight. She mustered courage to shove Frida’s hands off her and walked off quickly.

Frida began clapping. "Wow! Wow! Our little princess is getting bold now. Can’t wait till you actually get stronger."

Laurel paused. She’s also waiting for her to get stronger? How many people were waiting for her?

"We better get stronger, Laurel." Elma said. "We can’t keep disappointing them. Or ourselves."
