Chapter 323: Something’s wrong

Chapter Three Hundred-Twenty-Three – Something’s Wrong

Darren expected the visitor to return to Lunaria immediately but instead Zeno asked for a room and fell asleep in it. Darren couldn’t understand this behavior.

He asked Alice to keep watch over him but Alice said something about him didn’t feel right and blatantly disobeyed without giving any other reason.

He really wanted to toss her back to Damancas. A lycan had even crossed the border without Finn reporting so he wanted to believe Zeno didn’t feel like a threat.

"If something’s wrong with him, shouldn’t she say it early to save us—" his voice trailed off when he found a crow, staring at him, intently from outside the window.

He blinked, narrowing his eyes at the creature. It’s eyes were bright red and it seemed to be watching him. He moved to another room with a window.

The crow perched on a tree nearby, still watching him. He opened the window and it flew away. That was odd. Birds usually came to him. "This is suspicious."

And the unnatural eye color that matched Zeno’s. He was aware that Zeno used magic but the one that could manipulate animals... were really rare.

Sir Darren didn’t think he should tell him he could sense his magic and ask him about it. It could be a sensitive topic since Lunaria usually forced things on them.

"Ella, Ella?" he tried to make sure she’s safe in case this Zeno wasn’t to be trusted after all. He sensed her around Alice’s room and exhaled.

If she’s with Alice then she’d be safe, that’s the most usefulness Alice had to him by keeping Ella safe. He glanced at the window and found two new crows.

They both had the same eye color and he went to the window. "You two are quite special birds." He stretched his hand out to them.

They didn’t move towards him or away from him but just stayed there, he felt his mind link being nudged and released it for Finn. "Something wrong?"

"Um... a visitor from Black Claws came so I let him in but his wolves... are quite scary. They have red eyes and just wait outside for him." Finn sighed a lot.

Wolves with red eyes? Darren turned to the crows. Could it be a coincidence that these animals have red eyes like Zeno? Or by any chance is his magic at fault?

"I don’t know any magic skill that can manipulate animals and even if there is, Zeno began using magic only recently so he couldn’t have mastered a skill yet."

But strange things were happening in front of him so he didn’t feel confident in his hypothesis. "Try to chase them away. Be careful, Finn."

He strolled towards Zeno’s room while staying by the window to see how the birds would react. He saw them follow him as if tracking his whereabouts.

It’s either they were trying to follow or were protecting Zeno. The last part would make more sense because Zeno couldn’t possibly make them so intelligent.

"So, Finn? Did they leave?" he waited to hear the boy’s reply but it didn’t come immediately. "Finn?" he looked towards the border.

Goddess, it shouldn’t be that he brought in another visitor that would hurt the people of his pack, including children.

The boy sighed and Darren felt relieved that he was safe. "Nope, they didn’t budge but didn’t attack either. I felt bad to hit them hardly when they’re not doing anything."

Darren reached Zeno’s room and stood by it. The crows didn’t react and just stared at him. Darren couldn’t tell what would trigger them so he opened the door.

There was still no reaction from them, and Darren had begun growing more concerned. He’d like to be able to explain everything happening around him.

For his sake, Ella’s and the people of his pack. If Alice didn’t know what’s happening then was this a threat?

"Hmm... yes... hmm." Zeno reacted sleepily when the door opened. He rose from the bed and rubbed his eyes. "Do you need something, Sir Darren—"

He paused when he noticed Sir Darren’s annoyed expression. He sat up, wondering why.

"Those birds.... They’re not connected to you are they?" Darren tried not to sound too curious or annoyed, even if he knew his expression betrayed that. "They are wolves with red eyes outside too. What’s going on?"

Zeno felt like he could tell him easily, compared to when he had met Alpha Stefan. After all, this man quickly figured out their connection to him and was from Damancas.

"I use magic." He said as an icebreaker.

Darren shrugged. "I could tell. How did it relate to this?"

Zeno didn’t expect the sudden response. He could tell? The man might not be an ordinary of a traveler as he thought or as Alpha Stefan said.

"Well, that should explain... oh." He realized that magic that had to do with animals and dominating were not common so he’d have to explain.

A sense of pride filled him as he explained how his magic had taken a different turn and saved his wolf. It felt rewarding to tell Sir Darren when he had good reactions.

He knew how rare that was and would give him the suitable praise, Zeno puffed up at that thought.

Darren was near speechless. To think he’d the first lycan to be compatible with his wolf while having magic and his skill was a quite useful one.

"You are indeed one of a kind. Damancas would be jealous that Lunaria has such talent." Darren smiled.

Zeno didn’t expect the compliment to reach Kingdom level, and his heart melted. A small ’thank you’ left him.

Darren looked at the birds, wondering how many things he could do with them. "They can search for people, right?" he doubt they could do that but he asked.

"Not quite, unless I’m actively controlling them. They’re just on protective mode there." Zeno crossed his legs.

The magic was surely different, Darren thought but since it couldn’t find or track people then it’s no threat to him or his pack. He should tell Finn that quickly.

"Sorry to bother you. Sleep well." Darren said.

On hearing about sleep, Zeno’s body became weak and he fell back on the bed, feeling sleepy. He still didn’t know why he felt like sleeping all the time but he liked it.

"Yea, sure..." he slept off.
