Chapter Three Hundred-Eleven – Persistent
(Black Claws Pack/Green Valleys’ Pack)
It had been one week already and Stefan still received a generic reply from the young Beta whenever he asked why the Princess hadn’t returned.
"She’s busy with affairs with the King."
What bloody affairs could she be having with King Asher who only saw werewolves as experiment materials? He summoned for the young Beta this time.
Beta Cade watched the Alpha finger tap the desk while staring at the door, waiting for the young Beta. He could tell that Princess worried the Alpha.
Cade hated to accept it but he’d be saddened if the King actually hurt the Princess and she failed to return.
She had moments when she’s helpful and bearable. Her behavior didn’t seem surprising since they attacked her kingdom and he’d begun to accept that.
Also, her protection was currently Black Claws’ problem so they couldn’t let her get hurt but the decision became hard when it’s their King involved.
A new scent walked down the hall and Stefan sat straight. A light knock came on the door of his study and he gave them permission to come in.
A frown came to his face when he saw a lady covered in floral dresses, she looked like the Lady of a household but Stefan didn’t remember such at Green Valleys.
The only royalty at Green Valleys should be the Princess, shouldn’t it? Still, he nodded at her as he felt he should be respectful to whoever the Beta let be his representative.
The young lady bowed. "Alpha, I am the head servant at Young Master Ferdinand’s quarters. Nice to meet you."
A servant? Cade clenched his fists. How could that insolent boy send a servant to see the Alpha in his stead!
But Stefan didn’t mind since she didn’t look like a servant at all. "What exactly is Princess Laurel doing at the King’s palace, and what’s Zeldris doing that he can’t get her out?"
Cade didn’t expect the last part. Did the Alpha suggest that the knight should fight the King’s guards and break the Princess out? Wouldn’t that be too much?
The Head Servant shared the same concern with the Beta but she hid her thoughts. Her young Master had told her it’s a difficult situation so they could only hope.
"King Asher says he didn’t have an official reason for inviting the Princess to his palace, he was bored. So the Princess..." the Head Servant didn’t know how to say it.
The Princess was being played with and could only swallow whatever perverse game the King threw her way, at least that’s how the Head Servant saw it.
The two servants that followed the Young Master told her that the King openly asked for them to be given to him for experiments. Such a vile King would do anything.
Stefan refused to believe that’s all it took. The King deemed Laurel worthy enough to hang out with after one meeting? He found her that interesting?
Cade didn’t know what to say either. From what was said, he could only pity the King for being alone even if he had such a powerful Kingdom behind him.
That’s if they should take his words at face value, his idea of having fun and hanging out could be layers darker than what one would ordinarily think.
"He didn’t show any sign of wanting to kill anyone, did he?" Stefan asked, studying the Head Servant’s face.
She glanced at an object by her side, a wine cup and dragged her eyes back. "The King had been drugged when the Princess met him, he had been angry about it but the anger hadn’t been directed at the Princess."
Drugging the King was a serious offense. Stefan’s legs tapped the floor under the table. The story kept getting worse. "Was the culprit found?"
The Head Servant sighed and nodded. "Yes, apparently, it was a prank game he played with an official, Zara."
Cade and Stefan looked at each other. An official drugging the King because of a prank game? They decided to act like they heard nothing. "So she’s safe?"
The Head Servant nodded again. They should hope she was. "Once again, the knight and a warrior is with the Princess, she’d be fine."
That was a lie but her Young Master had told her to emphasize on it so Zeldris wouldn’t get into trouble since the Alpha had warned him to protect the Princess.
Stefan bought it and dismissed the Head Servant. Sorren had been accurate again. That King found a connection with his mate and he’d be persistent.
"What will you do if the King wants our mate?" Kai said out of nowhere. Stefan didn’t think the possibility was nonexistent anymore.
Having a connection with someone was a step to being in love. He still felt the King could never, but it’s no longer impossible. "Laurel wouldn’t want him—"
"And that’s your only comfort? Do you think it’d be a matter of if she wanted him or not?" Kai growled.
Stefan knew what he meant. The King would leave her no choice, so he’d be the only one to give Laurel a choice.
"I won’t let my mate be taken by any King, Kai, but you sound like I should pounce on whoever thought of it." Stefan sighed. "Such reaction didn’t help me."
There were many ways to destroy whatever relationship the King would build with Laurel if it got to that point.
A werewolf Luna at a Lycan Kingdom didn’t fit High Moon Kingdom, it might work anywhere but not there.
Beta Cade left his seat, watching the Alpha. Since the Head Servant left, the King had been inside his head.
He didn’t want his Alpha overthinking like that so he’d take the initiative to send a letter to the King asking for Laurel to be released.
Things could be done that way, after all, Laurel didn’t directly serve the King but the Alpha. If things get tougher, then they’d fake an emergency that Laurel had to solve.
Rolling Stones’ Pack still functioned well due to the Lead Warrior’s supervision but the Princess’ presence was highly needed... for their Alpha’s sake as well.
