Chapter Two Hundred-Twenty-Four – Grand Witch
(Damancas)
Darren stood in front of a building with a woven toy and a box of chips. He’d be picking Ella from school.
He felt guilty for leaving before, but he had almost no choice. Still, he knew she wouldn’t easily forgive him.
She’d been abandoned a lot while growing up.
He knocked on the witch’s home again, and waited for a reply. The door slowly opened and the little girl walked out with sunken shoulders, kicking a stone out.
She walked past him, keeping her head down.
Darren came in front of her and stooped down, he tried rubbing her head but she looked up revealing her teary face. His heart weakened and he stood up.
"I’m really sorry I left, but—"
"You promised!" she showed her pinky finger that was witness to his promise. "You said you’d take me back."
And he wanted to, but Ella’s magical power had increased and needed teaching to manage unless she might do something that’d she’d regret again.
Also, she and Escanor were two kids who didn’t see eye to eye so he thought it was convenient for her.
"Your teacher said I should leave you for a while. Don’t you want to get stronger? I want you to get stronger—"
She took down her pinky finger, clenching her small fists. "You broke your promise," her fists loosened. "Like everyone does. Just like everyone."
Darren sighed, stretching the box of chips to her.
"I said I’m sorry, Ella. It was for your own good, okay? Didn’t you learn... you surely learnt something, right?"
She looked at her hand, and her frown cleared. "I learnt how to create weak or strong barriers. I can choose it."
Darren smiled, thankful that she bought the change of topic. "That’s it. Now, you can do more without poising a threat to anyone. Even the old man will be proud of you."
The little girl made a small smile. "Hmm!"
They went towards the carriage he brought and afterwards they were on their way to Silent River Pack.
Ella gushed about all the things she learnt, and even if Darren didn’t know what those magical words meant, he kept on nodding. Till one part caught his attention.
"Ella, you say magical words, but you didn’t use any magical word when you used your barrier on that lycan."
She nodded proudly. "Because that was my own magic. If you are using spells of another magic that’s not your own, then you need to say the magical words."
Darren understood a bit but didn’t ask further to satiate his curiosity. He’d never have anything to do with magic anyway. He couldn’t bear trading his wolf for it.
He glanced at little Ella. The fact that she had to trade her wolf, as she had shifted early, for magic really hurt him, because it wasn’t her decision but her mother’s.
They reached Silent River and Ella jumped down, spinning around in happiness. "Wah!! I’m home! Finally!"
Darren smiled as he got down. Was the witch’s home that suffocating? Looking at how calm the pack was, he was glad that nothing happened while he’s gone.
"Um... Sir Darren, the Princess of Green Valleys’, and some weirdo, walked in recently." Finn said with slightly blushed cheeks.
Ella sprinted towards their mansion.
"Laurel!" she slammed the door open, and grinned on seeing the Princess.
She jumped on her before Laurel could react. Darren walked in, and smiled on seeing them.
Laurel rubbed the girl’s back. She didn’t think they were that close. "Nice to meet you, Ella, have you been out?"
The girl raised her head that had been buried on Laurel’s chest and looked at the young man peering into her face.
Zeldris squinted his eyes at her. "Are you Ella?"
Ella jumped down from Laurel, she grabbed Zeldris’s hand and pulled him towards her, at the same time she released him and swung two fingers between them.
Nothing happened.
Darren rushed and grabbed Ella, alarmed. "D-Did you use your barrier on him? Why? Wait... how—" the little girl was taken from his arms by Zeldris who spun her around.
"Ella! It’s really you! And you grew bigger!"
"Yayy!" the little girl laughed as she was spun around.
Darren and Laurel watched them with tilted heads. Then, Laurel gasped. Could she be the cousin that Zeldris had been looking for? It was a female he met as a kid.
Then her anticipation died. If he met her as a kid then it couldn’t be Ella who was still a kid. "Who are you to—’"
"This is my little Mistress Ella, daughter of the Grand Witch my mother was a junior entourage at!" Zeldris introduced. "I thought she was dead though."
"Grand Witch!" Darren yelled.
"Daughter of a Witch!" Laurel stepped back.
Darren and Laurel faced each other before looking away, thinking. Zeldris and Ella wondered what was wrong.
"Well, yes. Ella has magical ability." Darren declared the obvious while going to the two. "I didn’t think you too—"
"Oh, he didn’t trade his wolf." Ella nudged Zeldris. "But, he’s fun to be around, and weak magic doesn’t work on him, so the other witches used to use him for practice."
So that was what she tested now? Laurel found herself pulling Zeldris away from the girl. "That’s mean. He’s not a test practice object."
Zeldris’s face heated up, he replied. "It’s fine. I liked it."
Something broke in Laurel and she scowled. "I always guessed you liked pain, you masochist scoundrel. That’s why you annoy me so I’d hit you, huh!"
Darren came between them, sighing at the sudden revelations, both important and unimportant.
"Ella, I never could guess your mother was the Grand Witch. It’s sad that she died that day—"
"She died?" Zeldris came in front of Darren. "After all the junior witches sacrificed their lives to make sure she escaped!" he looked down. "My mother too!"
Darren’s lips parted. Such young people had experienced such a dreadful past? Lycans were so destructive.
He looked at Ella. "I found you crying and almost passed out by a dead lady. I assumed she was your mother—"
"My mother is alive!" Ella yelped.
Darren paused. Did that mean the dead woman wasn’t her mother? If the Grand Witch was still alive somewhere, why hadn’t she come for her child?
