Chapter Two Hundred-Four – Desperate
Two notices were on her desk when she returned. They must have arrived while she was at the forest because Laurel was sure she cleared the table.
One was from Darren, telling he’d be pay a visit with the Delta candidate. Laurel thought he’d really be the Delta since she didn’t have an Elite Force as second choice.
The other was from Beta Cade quarters.
Laurel didn’t think it was from that Cara, this time.
Cade’s effrontery amused her.
He asked ’politely’ that she visit his quarters as he had an urgent matter to discuss with her. If she’d be free, then he’d send a warrior to bring her.
Laurel calmly sat down and wrote a reply. "No."
She didn’t need more words. ’No’ meant everything and answered all his questions. Would she be free? No. Would she come? No.
There was nothing urgent happening at Green Valleys so she was sure that ’urgent matter didn’t concern Green Valleys. Since it didn’t, it was no business of hers.
Cade’s Alpha had also left the report with Lady Cara unanswered. They must still think she had no better use of time. She immediately gave the reply to a maid to submit.
She rushed to look for the twins but remembered the hybrid and turned back to the hall. The twins will probably be with Lisa or Valkyrie so they were safe.
The maid she sent to submit the reply came running towards her as she walked back to the hall. Laurel paused. That’s fast. And the maid wasn’t with the letter.
"What happened?"
"Beta Cade and a warrior are here." The girl said with lowered head. "The Beta wants to speak with you."
Laurel subconsciously arranged her clothes. Why did that lycan visit without a notice? He really took her for a joke.
"Leave and lock everywhere!" She ordered as she hurried to the hall. The maid hesitated. Lock everywhere? With the Beta still inside? But she ran to handle it.
Laurel stormed into the hall, glaring at the Lycan.
Cade forced a smile, waving her letter. "I had assumed you’d tell me to come myself so I was already on the way."
Laurel stepped down, advancing towards him. So he knew she wouldn’t come? "You think too highly of yourself. Why will I want to see you?"
The Beta frowned slightly. He shouldn’t forget how condescending she could be. It must be payback of her time in the prison so he’d let it go when she did it.
She sat down and shifted her gave to Dylan, who had a grumpy look since he came. "Dylan, what urgent matter is it? I believe you know."
Cade shrugged. Since she wanted to ask Dylan, then it’s fine, but he didn’t expect Dylan’s next words.
"Well, Lady Cara doesn’t want to do it, so the Beta was hoping someone from Green Valleys will do it."
With the way he worded it, Cade was sure Laurel would never do it. Why was Dylan painting his sister as the bad person she was?
He sighed, pushing Dylan behind him.
Laurel raised her head.
"Why will someone from Green Valleys do it? Dylan, what’s that girl’s duty when she got assigned here? Or did she only come to be the Beta’s baby sister?"
Dylan popped out from the Beta’s back and reported. "She was supposed to assign maids to the Palace but she didn’t do it. Prince Sorren had handled it."
Cade pulled him back. He was now sure Dylan was trying to spite his sister, and he didn’t blame the boy. He got punished because of her.
He met Laurel’s disappointed gaze and scowled. "What?"
Laurel huffed, looking away. "You are spoiling a grown lady. Let her do something in the pack. She’s not a guest."
Cade understand that perfectly, except this was different. "She can’t go to Damancas and negotiate an alliance."
Hearing the problem, Laurel couldn’t help but laugh loudly. "Who told her to do that? With Damancas?"
Cade sighed. The job was definitely impossible but that was Sorren’s way of punishing his sister. He was grateful it wasn’t to return to High Mountains.
He wouldn’t be able to protect her from Green Valleys and she’d go through hell. At least, with this, he’d find a way to send a werewolf with no danger.
Laurel finally stopped laughing and got serious. "My reply stands. No. No one from Green Valleys will be—"
"I heard about the Elite Force that was disbanded." Cade interrupted. "I can talk to the Alpha about it."
Laurel thought for a while then shrugged. "I don’t need it anymore. No, no one is going—"
"You wanted General Conrad to train your warriors, right? Fine. He’d agree." Cade sighed.
Laurel grinned widely. The Beta was desperate, wasn’t he? To think she’d see his desperate side not when she’s strangling him as he did her in the prison, but when he’s trying to protect his sister.
She played with her hair, staring at Cade to soak in his distressed expression. "Well, my ’no’ still stands."
Cade took a step back in shock. She rejected it. The Lead Warrior had told him about how intensely a new werewolf working with her had debated with the Alpha over that.
And she’d let it go? "Why?"
Laurel grinned widened.
Cade frowned. She enjoyed him begging her, right?
"Instead, I have decided to ask Damancas to send a seasoned Warlord to train my warriors." Laurel explained. "I wouldn’t force your General. He already said no."
Cade came forward. "He didn’t say anything, that was the Alpha’s speculation—"
"Oh, the Alpha lied then?" Laurel looked shocked. "Or was he the one saying no to his own warriors being trained?"
Case hissed, glaring at her. She always had a way with words.
Dylan watched Laurel in admiration.
The only person he had seen use words to bully others was Prince Sorren. And seeing the princess get under the Beta’s skin with mere words, was plausible.
Laurel exhaled, looking at Cade like he was only a child. "If that’s what the Alpha wants, then I’d humbly accept it."
