Chapter 188: Changing Faces
Chapter Hundred-Eighty-Eight - Changing Faces
Stefan turned to his Beta in slight amusement. "Oh, you made them Elder? I was never invited to their ceremony."
Cade gulped down nothing. Why was that awful prank catching up with him now? And in front of his Alpha?
"We haven’t had the ceremony yet." Elder Baka rubbed his palms together. "We hope to, as soon as—"
"Sorry," Stefan interrupted, "but they are no openings for Elders. Only warriors, if your body will let you."
The two werewolves suffered paralysis for a split second. Then marched towards the Alpha, making Stefan frown.
"We are the elders of Black Claws Pack! What do you mean you don’t have an opening for us?!" Elder Uso yelled, feeling distraught.
Cade balled his fists at their audacity to yell at the Alpha. He blamed himself for playing with old men during the time Green Valleys had been recently raided.
He just needed more ways to torment the Princess so asked the elders to cooperate with him and bring omegas to humiliate her.
He had lied about them getting to be Elders later but the fools took it more seriously than he’d have imagined.
"Did you not hear me?" Stefan narrowed his eyes at the old men. "I said there’s no opening!"
The Elders took numerous steps back, snapping to the reality than the young man before them was a lycan and a lycan Alpha at that.
Their eyes shifted to the Beta and they made careful steps towards him. "Beta Cade, please. You told us we’d be Elders. We can’t be warriors, look at us."
The Beta’s eyes glazed over their old body. They could still be warriors, after all, they might not have reached two hundred yet. "You heard the Alpha. No more opening."
Stefan internally snickered. Why did his Beta make it sound like they had been openings before? The Original Black Claws Elders were all lycans.
They had been warriors and officials with Black Claws for more than a hundred years. And luckily, few survived and were at High Mountains at the moment.
Why should he pick random old men as Elders at such a time? "You old men should return to Green Valleys. No—"
Elder Baka fell on his knees, below the Lycan Alpha. "Please... we have no place to go. We were banished from Green Valleys. We’ve no place to go to but here."
Stefan furrowed his brows, bending to the man’s height. Banishment was a big deal. "What happened?"
Elder Uso fell on his knees besides Beta Cade. "The Princess had banished us from our—"
"I asked why!" Stefan raised his voice. "Obviously it’d be the Princess that banished you, but why did she?"
The elders hesitated and it gave Stefan his answer. "You two were the fools who tried to kill my... the Princess!"
Cade sent a shocked stare to the Alpha. Did he want to say my Princess? My subject? His what exactly? He faced the old men. "You tried killing your own Princess?’
How did they expect them to feel comfortable with elders who tried killing their own Princess?
"And you even hit an innocent person?" he grabbed Elder Uso, while referring to Jessika.
The Elder wanted to complain that it was his slave that attacked the Princess but his tongue tied due to fear.
"You tried to kill a Princess who brought freedom for your people." Stefan left the Elder. "why not kill yourselves if you’ve no where else to go?"
Cade gulped down saliva. The Alpha must be really annoyed to suggest that to the fear stricken old men.
He let go of Elder Uso and worried over the anger brewing in the Alpha’s eyes.
What exactly was the relationship between the Princess and his Alpha?
The Alpha didn’t kill her while at the prison, and after taking her to Lycan Packs Meeting, he honored her request for her pack to be free.
Would Sorren know? Sorren knew his brother most, and he was at the Lycan Packs Meeting with them. Maybe he should visit Sorren, after all.
The Elders whined and cried on the ground and the Alpha mind linked guards to pick them to spend a while in the prison.
"And did you involve warriors of Black Claws?"
The Elders raised their sullen face and shook their heads. Cade sighed in relief. He noticed the Alpha was still greatly displeased. He cleared his throat.
"I’m sorry for playing around with these men. Accept my sincere apologies." He made a small bow.
The Elders, hearing his words, began resisting the warriors trying to take them away. Since it was over for them, then they’d express themselves to heart content.
"Don’t think because you are the current Alpha that our Princess wouldn’t overthrow you one day!" they barked, deciding to side with their original pack over lycans.
Cade was stunned by the outburst. These old men changed faces really fast. Stefan began walking back in.
"You don’t know the blood running through her veins, do you! One that’d kill you in your sleep and destroy all you love! Just like her father did to you!" Elder Baka spat.
Stefan paused, glaring at them. He had flashbacks to the threats Laurel gave him at the prison. He frowned. "You can educate me. What blood runs through her veins?"
Cade wondered why the Alpha was interested in it. The only blood running through that Princess’ veins was that of her murderous father and unfortunate mother.
"You have no idea!" the elders stopped struggling when the guards dragging them away, stood still to let them talk with the Alpha. "That Princess is one of them."
One of what now? Stefan was getting bored.
"One of the generation of werewolves who’d bring back that generation. It’s been marked in her blood and on her wolf! Just wait and see, bastards!" Elder Uso yelled.
Cade’s claws left their place but Stefan prevented him from moving to them. "I shouldn’t have listened. Take them away and give them a good beating."
The elders began pleading, begging, changing faces again as they swore loyalty to the lycans. They were dragged out of sight, as their screams trailed.
Stefan meditated on their words. Not much made sense so were probably lies. But the part about something being marked on wolf caught his attention.
Her wolf did look different.
Still, it wasn’t a clear indication of anything.
