Chapter 121: Distant Relatives
Chapter Hundred-Twenty-One – Distant Relatives
Little Marino will grow to rival Sorren. "Happy Birthday, Mira, Marino." Laurel touched their faces.
Little Mira smiled but little Marino was still trying to know what planet he existed in as he just woke up from sleep.
"Thank you." their older brother said on their behalf.
Laurel turned to the door where they came from. "Um... your parents? Where are they?"
The boy looked down. "Um... they are... dead."
Laurel’s smile fell. They were dead? She looked at the twins and then around the room. Did that mean only the young boy lived with these fragile children? In here?
Her mind wondered if the parents died during the raid. So many had been lost. She gripped her dress tightly. If only Stefan had gone for her father only.
"But it’s okay." The boy forced a smile.
Laurel shook her head. It was never okay being an orphan. She lived like one, without a mother and with a careless father. It was horrible, even as a princess.
"It’s been two years already so we’ve been managing." The boy added, rubbing Mira’s head.
Two years? The guilty washing over Laurel vanished. "They died long ago? Then, how did you guys survive? No relatives to take the twins in?"
The boy frowned, holding unto his siblings. "I-I didn’t want to give them out. My relatives only wanted them because they had good looks. They said they’d marry Mira off to—"
Seeing his voice rising with every sentence, Laurel patted his head so he’d stop. "I understand, I am sorry I ask."
The boy sniffed them buried his head in his hands. His little siblings stared at him, wondering what happened.
Laurel’s eyes scanned the place. So had they been living there alone? No one really came to help them?
"Lena." The boy looked up.
Laurel faced him. "L-Lena?"
The boy nodded. "We originally came from River lane pack. Our parents were already dead by then."
The teenage boy went on to explain how famine had destroyed Riverlane Pack and his parents were victims because they prioritized their children’s survival.
When Alpha King Titus had attacked Riverlane, he was like a savior to them as he brought them to the prosperous Green Valleys.
The attack also had very few casualties so the captives of Riverlane had few complaints.
Laurel wondered if it was why Lena and Marcus never held any resentment to her even if her father was the one who destroyed their home.
"Lena had taken care of us since we came here. We are distant relatives. Actually," the boy sniffed. "Uncle Marcus came to see us, to drop some food supplies, but he was caught and I don’t think we’d ever see him again."
A tear streamed down Laurel’s eyes but she wiped it off before the boy noticed. "Probably."
She looked down. Since the kids were Lena and Marcus responsibility, then they’d have to be hers responsibility.
Since they were distant relatives to people she cared about, all she had to do was make sure their relatives and bloodline survive.
"What’s your name?"
"Matt!" the boy chuckled nervously. "Sorry, Princess, I thought I said it already. Lena used to tell us about you a lot. We are really happy to actually see you now."
Laurel’s cheeks reddened and she looked away. What had Lena been saying about her? How depressed she was? Or miserable her life had been?
"Matt, you must have heard of our pack being under our captors’, right?"
The boy sat straight, "I have, Princess but the elders are taking it wrongly, that’s why the people are still skeptical."
The elders? Laurel clenched her fists. Indeed, the elders will have a better hold on the people than her. They’d make the people believe total dependence was best.
They have already surrendered shamefully after pouring all the blame on her and her dead father.
Laurel looked at Little Mira on her laps and her ill feelings disappeared. She smiled at her. "My initial plan remains. We need a change of elders."
Matt looked up. "I don’t know anything about royalty or elders but can they be changed easily? It’s not like every old person can be an elder, right?"
Laurel rose to her feet carrying Mira. "Well, elders should be old wise wolves who aren’t selfish. It’d be a hassle but we’d find them. Ah, the grand hall."
"It’s been locked since the raid." Matt informed. "We don’t know who has the keys. It was locked to prevent the Lycans from using it."
Laurel left the store, looking outside. She saw Mira’s eyes sparkle on seeing the sky. She must be used to the dark store. Or her older brother hid his siblings for protection.
"Come, Matt with Marino. Let’s go on a short walk."
"What about your tea?" Matt looked at a room. "I already heat it up." He gave her Marino. "You can take them, I’m an apprentice at a wood maker’s store. I have to return."
Laurel held the twins in both arms. "Sure!"
When Matt left, she smiled widely and rubbed her face on the kids. "Mhmm... now, I feel like a mom to these pretty children." She hurried to the old lady’s store.
On her way, she wondered on a good place she could live with the maids. Should they renovate the maid quarters?
The maid quarters used to be an actual maid quarters and the maids there lived and fed under King Titus’s but the place wasn’t that bad.
Beds and furniture were repaired and changed every eighteen months to avoid bedbugs or accidents. Laurel was sure because she Lena usually stayed in her room during those times.
But now, the maids in the quarters were captured pack members and all the actual maids were all killed.
Which meant, everyone had to care for themselves or pay the one you want to work for you.
"Renovating the maid quarters will mean still living in that palace. I’d like to avoid it." She mumbled as she knocked on the woman’s store.
A gruff voice replied her. "Come in."
That wasn’t the woman. Laurel pushed the door opened, she tried bowing but froze. "Elder Kuso!"
The old man looked up at her, then frowned deeply. "You insolent princess, what are you doing in my house?!"
This was his house? The old woman was his wife? Laurel took a step back. How unlucky could she get?
