Chapter 133: Don’t Lead That One Astray
Donnie started lunch as Xavier slept. He looked over and Stephen was sitting beside Chas, who had laid his head down into his lap. Stephen had his arm wrapped around the young man and gently stroked his hair. Clark was rearranging the reading nook area so it could accommodate a half bed and a place for Xavier to sleep also.
Yes, it was going to be more crowded, but hey, you do what you can for family when they are in need.
Lunch was almost ready when Chas abruptly woke up looking for Xavier, almost in a panic. Stephen assured him that he was with Donnie in the kitchen and was perfectly safe and being cared for. Stephen helped Chas up and showed him Xavier’s new sleeping area that was surrounded by books once he learned how to read.
Chas broke down in tears—he could not believe anyone would do anything like this for him. After all, he was a Genman youth who had just had a child way too young, and there was no one for him.
Clark sat down and had Chas sit on his lap and leaned back against him. "You have plenty of people for you and Xavier. You now have a family who loves you and that precious baby that you have. Donnie will help you, and Stephen will also nurse him, but right now you need to learn how to read and write so that you can provide a future for Xavier. When you go through your transition, you will discover even more after you grow. But right now is your learning time—we will supply the love and attention you need, you supply the ability to learn."
Clark’s tone grew more serious. "I’ll let you know right now, young man, you’re still lap size, but when you start getting ready for transition, you’re going to grow. You will probably grow 6 to 8 inches more between now and then. You will also bulk up and become a proper young Genman. If you want to get up, go into the kitchen and see Donnie—he’ll show you how you take care of your son while you work."
Chas hugged Clark’s neck and kissed him on the cheek as he departed for the kitchen. Clark blushed as Stephen pointed his finger at him. "Be careful, Godfather, don’t lead that one astray."
Clark cut his eyes back at Stephen. "The only vent I wish to be in around here is yours. I’ve got no designs on anyone else, no matter what they try. So you’ve got nothing to worry about but being able to walk the next morning."

Chas was amazed when he saw his son asleep in that strap system that was around Donnie’s chest. Donnie saw the questionable look on Chas’s face. "It’s called a carryall—it helps you bond with your child as you work so that you two can spend as much quality time together as possible. After Xavier wakes up and he feeds, we’re going to put it on you, and then you can walk around with him strapped to your chest. He may decide to sample some of your nectar—if he wants to, let him have it. It can’t hurt him; it will just keep him full. So, shall we get to your first cooking lesson?"
Chas was so involved watching every move and taking notes as Donnie prepared the meal for lunch, he couldn’t believe his eyes. He was constantly asking questions about every step. Neither one noticed they had a visitor—Mr. Zack.
"Well, it seems that you two have hit it off very nicely together, and Donnie, you are caring for his child now."
"No, Sir, Mr. Zack, he was sleeping, his fever needed fed, and I had to prepare lunch, so I put him in the carryall," Donnie explained. "I showed him what it’s good for, how to use it, and as we’re talking, I’m preparing the meal, he’s taking notes. I plan on training him as my assistant for the restaurant if that’s okay with you, Sir. And I have also instructed him in the do’s and don’ts and to watch out for his upcoming cycle in two days. He will be locked in one of the rooms during his cycle—we’ll slide his meals into the trap door at the bottom, and Stephen and I will take care of Xavier while he’s in cycle."
"Wow, you really have thought about everything, haven’t you? Everything except he’s supposed to be in the dorm—he’s not supposed to be out in public yet. We need them to get used to everything here gently, and you go in and just blow all the plans apart." Zack’s tone carried a hint of exasperation. "I guess Donnie knows better than the psychotherapist when it comes to integrating young uneducated Genmen into our society."
"No, Sir, Mr. Zack, I don’t know better than the doctor’s, but when I saw young Xavier starving for food just because Chas was trying, but his nectar had no nutritional value—it’s just a filler—he’s too young for his body to produce the good stuff. So I fed the young man, and I brought them home with me." Donnie’s voice grew more determined. "Stephen and myself will feed Xavier while Chas here is learning to read, write, and cook. My nephew will have a complete education—he’s not going to be one of these ignorant, dumb Genmen that we’re called by humans. And you have always told me that family is the most important thing here at the Z1, and Chas is my family along with Xavier. I’m adopting them as my family, so Uncle Stephen and Uncle Donnie here will be taking care of these two, and Clark will be helping us since I understand he’s going to be here quite a bit."
"Well, Donnie, you are correct—family is the most important thing, and I see that you have seen fit to lay claim to Chas and accept them into yours." Zack’s expression softened. "Donnie, you know better than anyone what it is like to not have hope and someone else showing you a helping hand. I wasn’t so sure that you could make it with Stephen because he was rough on you when you first got here, but here I am, proven wrong once again."
---
Zack could sense that Chas wanted to ask a question. "Okay, young man, I can see the wheels burning in your mind right now. What do you need to know? Sit down for a few minutes and let’s talk."
"Mr. Zack, why do you care about Genmen so much? You could just take our nectar and sell it and be a rich man, but between you and the ranch next door, this is wonderful. But still, why?"
"Well, Chas, I came here when I was 10 as an orphan," Zack began thoughtfully. "The old man that ran the place and owned it let me work for him for food and shelter. We bonded—he taught me a lot about Genmen and how valuable they were to all humans. When I was 15, he died of a massive heart attack. Unbeknownst to me, he left me this place and all that went with it—the good, the bad, and the ugly sides. I set it up to run as a business with a heart. I had several older Genmen that helped me struggle through the years, and then I met my first love."
Zack’s voice grew more personal. "He was just another young Genman that I was mentoring. The night of the second big storm, we found ourselves in a situation that could not be avoided. He transitioned, and after that, he conceived our son. We couldn’t announce that we’d had a son; we couldn’t announce that we had made love because we didn’t have sex—we made love that night. I was there throughout the entire pregnancy, I was there and delivered my own son, but I helped raise him from afar. I was good old Uncle Zack, the one that he could go to every time he had a problem with his dad."
His expression grew somber. "Unfortunately, some decisions were made, and in a reckless moment, my mate was bred by another Genman. It destroyed us as a couple, but we remained friends and we’re still friends to this day. We attempted a reconciliation and we conceived another child who, due to a tragic accident, didn’t survive—he was born too early. Our son was out of control, so we sent him away to a behavioral modification ranch. The next time I saw my son, he was already pregnant with his second child. This almost killed me—I had unknowingly placed him on a corporate breeding farm that was masquerading as a behavioral unit."
"He was still so mad and upset at myself and his dad, he would not listen and he never left, until one day there was an emergency here with his dad and he came home, bringing his three sons with him to live forever. He’s recently just had his fourth child and is with a very good Genman who treats him like royalty—they’re very much in love and are raising his son and their child together. You’ll meet Willie—believe me, if you’re on the Z1, everybody knows Willie."
Zack’s voice warmed as he concluded. "So you asked me why I care so much—it’s because of the way that I was brought up and the way that I have matured. And I now have a beautiful Genman in my life who I intend to spend the rest of my life with, and we have a new set of twins."
