Chapter 129: The Vested Interest
Chapter 129: The Vested Interest
Lex waited patiently at the medical area for two certain people to show up, and about two hours after he got the phone call from Donnie, guess who showed up.
Lex looked at Stephen and Clark and crossed his arms. "Now Clark, I forgive you—it’s a fact you didn’t know anything about Genmen genetics, DNA, and breeding physiology. But Stephen, really? Did you forget what you learned in class called Genmen reproduction 101?"
He shook his head. "Do I even need to run a blood sample to tell you that you did a sero-conversion to the child that you were carrying and it’s now a hybrid that carries Clark’s DNA?"
"We can do it—maybe it didn’t happen, maybe I’m still pregnant with my pureblood child," Stephen said hesitantly. "But after last night, I don’t get much of a chance."
"Yeah, I heard all about you two. Really, Clark? Fourteen times you two made out overnight? What were you trying to do—wear out his vent first time?" Lex raised an eyebrow. "You got a little of Genmen vent and you went wild."
Dr. Clark Wooten had lost all of his professionalism. "Hey, I had a dry spell and I was making up for lost time. Plus I couldn’t stop—he was so irresistible."
"Yes, Clark, it’s called pheromones. And yesterday during the procedure, I noticed that he was producing what we call slick, especially a large amount after you laid your hand on his stomach." Lex continued his explanation. "But you two are not totally guilty. Sometimes Genmen children in gestation have a way of imprinting on another male that they wish to become their father, especially when there’s not been any male contact other than the dad. So it’s like you two got set up and he played a royal flush. To which you countered with an ace of spades and went into the Queen."
Clark shook his head. "I don’t understand—how can a child in gestation control anything?"
Stephen chuckled. "Because you’re not dealing with humans—you are dealing with a pregnant Genmen, and our bodies don’t always play by the rules that humans set down."
"Okay, let me ask you two," Lex said, "if it turns out that Stephen is positive for hybrid markers, what are your plans?"
Carter took Stephen’s hand in his. "If what we did last night changed this child into a hybrid and it is part mine, I will do whatever is needed to do right by the child and Stephen. I know we just met, but as far as I’m concerned, we’ve known each other for years. This just seems right to me."
"I agree with Clark," Stephen said. "If I converted because of what we did last night—all night long—and this child is his, I have no problem sharing my life and the child with him if that’s what he wants. But if he wishes nothing to do with us and he wants to walk away, he’s free to walk away because I plan to raise this child myself anyhow. Just because it’s a hybrid and I know who its father is and where he works and lives, it does make a difference, but I will make sure that he knows who his father is and he has a relationship with his father if he wants it."
"Just try and get rid of me," Clark said firmly. "I’m going to take up residence with you and Donnie if this child is mine by conversion. I will be beside you 100% of the way. And if it’s not, I’ll still be there, because I want to pursue a relationship with you, Stephen. I feel something for you I’ve never felt before."
Lex took Stephen’s finger and put it in the sequencer device and pressed the button. After a pop, the sequencer started to read the blood sample.
Three minutes later, the machine pinged and printed a readout.
Lex took the paper off of the printer. "The results are Genmen DNA, human DNA, hybrid DNA—sero-conversion confirmed."
He looked up at them. "Congratulations, Clark and Stephen. It’s going to be a boy, and in four months, you are going to be coparents together."
Clark couldn’t help himself and wrapped his arms around Stephen and kissed him so deeply. He brushed a couple of tears off his cheek and asked if he was okay.
"Yes, I am. This is something that neither me nor you had any control over. It seems like the decision was made for us when you laid your hand on my stomach and smiled at me." Stephen smiled softly. "No matter what we decided, our son decided something else. He wanted to be raised by a father and a dad."
Clark chuckled. "Well, it seems like I might be enjoying Donnie’s breakfasts a little bit more often if he doesn’t mind me staying over sometimes between shifts and rotations at the hospital."
"Clark, let me ask you one thing. I’ve been thinking about this—we got this nice clinic out here that we need doctors rotating in and out. What about a satellite clinic for doctors that want to learn about Genmen physiology and Genmen health issues? You could help me with the obstetrics end of the deal because their children are starting to pop out left and right." Lex paused thoughtfully. "And I’ve looked at that new chair for the delivery section. I spoke to Martin and to Hans, and they told me how great the one helped him deliver. You think the hospital might sponsor one, or do I need to talk to the Hawthorns about this?"
"Lex, I don’t know if you need to talk to the Hawthorns, but I definitely need to talk to Ed Hawthorne and do a little bit of explaining to him and Mr. Spinelli. I was a guest on the Z1 and it seems I took a few liberties that possibly should not have been done, and that resulted in me being a father now." Clark sighed. "I need to smooth things over with the two big guys in charge."
"Dr. Clark Wooten, I don’t know if you really understand that this is a family-run venture here at the Z1. Mr. Spinelli, as you call him, is my grandfather, and Mr. Ed Hawthorne conceived his first set of twins who are due in a few months with my uncle Tim, who is serving as a surrogate parent so the Hawthorns could have children." Lex smiled. "So I think maybe I might be able to help a little bit in this department. But if you want to try on your own, go right ahead—I won’t stop you. But if you need any backup, just holler."
Clark thanked Lex. "Let me try this on my own. I’m a big boy—I was partially responsible for this mess that I am thrilled to death with, and let me try to put it in perspective for everyone involved. But if you could get a hold of Ed and have him meet me at your grandfather’s office, maybe the four of us can sit down and I can eat a little crow and beg for forgiveness for Stephen."
Lex picked up his phone and called his grandfather. "Yes, sir, I have two people that are coming over to your office in a few minutes and they need an audience with you and Ed so that you can all go over a couple of developments that have taken place. And by the way, grandfather, cut them a break—qualified individuals such as this person coming to see you are far and few in between. Plus, he’ll have a vested interest to stay."
By the time Clark and Stephen got to Zach’s office, Ed was already there waiting. The two walked into the office and stood there, Stephen partially hiding behind Clark and still holding his hand.
