Chapter 142: Side Story: Morin in the Republic of Mara (Part 6)
His horns were curled like a ram’s and also black.
His eyes, an alluring mix of purple and pink, held a seductive gleam as they looked Morin’s way with a bewitching smile.
"Oh? You must be the Dragon Man who is staying with Nabe, right?"
"Uh—yes, that’s me."
Morin hadn’t expected to be spoken to and was caught off guard.
The man approached, now standing directly in front of Morin.
There was something so provocative about him that it made Morin’s heart skip a beat.
He couldn’t look away from that playful smile.
"Hmm, you’re cute. Still young, huh? Black hair and black eyes... so, you’re a black dragon?"
"Yes. Um—"
"Ah, sorry. I’m Noel, one of the tenants here. You can call me Noel. Nice to meet you."
"I—I’m Morin."
Something about this man put Morin on edge, but he was also strangely drawn in.
Noel’s drooping purple eyes sparkled with amusement as he looked at Morin, who found himself unable to look away.
"Feeling lonely?"
"Huh?"
Morin’s thoughts felt hazy, his mind not working properly.
All he could do was stare into those eyes.
Noel crouched down to meet Morin’s gaze directly.
As he licked his lips, Morin’s heart pounded wildly.
Why did it feel like he could only hear Noel’s voice?
"You’re so adorable. Hey, Morin—if you’re feeling lonely, want me to keep you company?"
"C-company?"
"Yeah."
The hand that touched his cheek was warm.
Morin couldn’t escape from that ensnaring gaze.
Noel leaned closer, whispering into his ear with a breath that sent shivers down his spine.
"I’ll make you feel good—like you’re dreaming. I’ll love you so much you won’t even remember what loneliness is."
Love him...?
That word swelled inside Morin’s chest.
He wanted it—eyes that saw only him.
Hands that reached only for him.
A place where he belonged.
He wanted to be needed.
If not... then where was he supposed to go?
Suddenly, he was pulled backward.
Still dazed, he felt someone wrap their arms around him from behind.
A familiar warmth.
A familiar scent.
"Malvis...?"
He called the name that had floated to the surface of his mind.
This scent—it was definitely Malvis’s.
It carried a faint sensuality.
"Morin! Are you okay!?"
"...Huh?"
"Noel!"
The harshness in Malvis’s voice cut through the fog clouding Morin’s mind.
His vision cleared, and he blinked his eyes several times as he turned to look behind him.
"Noel, that joke went way too far. He’s a guest of the our country."
"No need to get so worked up. Besides, I wasn’t serious. What really drew him in was the weakness in his heart."
Noel stood up, still smiling, completely unapologetic.
Now, even looking into his eyes, Morin didn’t feel that strange pull anymore.
What had that just been?
"But wow, seeing you that mad, Malvis? That’s rare. If he’s so important, maybe you should mark him."
"Tch—!"
With that final, teasing remark, Noel waved and strolled away.
Morin glanced behind him at Malvis.
His face was twisted in a mixture of distress and frustration.
Morin didn’t understand why he looked like that, and with hesitation, he reached out toward him.
"What’s wrong?"
"What’s wrong? Morin, you were caught up in Noel’s temptation."
"Temptation...?"
Sure, Noel had that kind of presence, but Morin had never experienced anything like it before.
Still looking confused, he was met with a deep sigh from Malvis.
"Noel’s a throwback to an incubus ancestor. He has powerful seductive abilities. If I hadn’t shown up, he might have taken you with him."
"An incubus...? Isn’t that one of the old bloodlines of the demon race? I thought there were barely any of them left."
"You know your stuff. That’s right—incubus are part of an ancient bloodline. Their descendants are rare, and even when the blood survives, it doesn’t always awaken. In Noel’s case, his family had a distant connection to the incubus, and after many generations, that blood suddenly resurfaced. That’s why he’s so powerful."
Morin recalled that strange sensation from earlier.
His mind had gone fuzzy, his thoughts fragmented.
He hadn’t even felt the urge to resist.
His heartbeat had quickened, leaving behind a strangely painful ache in his chest.
"Morin, you have high magical power, so I thought you’d be able to guard against that sort of thing..."
"Feeling lonely?"
Those words echoed again in his mind.
Lonely.
Morin hated that word.
Because it felt like it had been created just for him.
Everyone was kind.
His mother and father cherished him.
His older brother Kaelion had doted on him when they were younger.
His brother Vaelrik had played with him all the time.
His sister Seraphina always gave him samples of her new sweets.
His sister Nyx also always comforted him when he cried.
He believed he was loved.
But that love belonged to the family as a whole—it wasn’t something meant just for him.
That’s why, when Uncle Gabriel found him, Morin thought his is the one.
Someone who saw him.
He convinced himself it was fate.
He wanted to be useful to Uncle Gabriel.
Maybe, just maybe, if he proved his worth, he’d be loved in return.
Maybe Uncle Gabriel would one day say, I love you.
"Morin!"
"!"
His thoughts had spiraled so deeply he hadn’t noticed Malvis calling his name.
Now that he’d snapped out of it, he saw Malvis looking at him with an almost frightened expression.
A hand reached toward his cheek—his face was wet.
"Oh... hah... I’m being ridiculous. Don’t worry about it, really. It’s just, I’ve never studied abroad before, you know? I got a little homesick, that’s all. Like a kid, right? Let’s keep this a secret, okay?"
It was stupid.
Crying wouldn’t change anything.
Morin knew he’d never be special to Uncle Gabriel.
In fact, he might never even see him again.
His chest throbbed with pain.
He’d been so focused on that one thing—on being useful, on being loved—that now he didn’t know what to do.
But he was here to move forward.
