Chapter 363: This Spells Massive Trouble
"Ow!"
Vincent yelped, clutching the back of his head. Snapping to look at the infuriated Madeline, his eyes watered slightly.
Instead of the stinging from the unforeseen hit, it was from the weight of humiliation.
The police station buzzed with fluorescent lights, low chatter, and also brawls from a few others at the other end of the room. Yet it seemed like everyone’s eyes were in his direction.
The room froze. The tension hung thick in the air.
The officer behind the desk raised an eyebrow. Brian, who appeared alongside Madeline, straightened with a quiet grunt of displeasure. Lariette stared in stunned disbelief, then slowly blinked.
"Maddie!" Vincent snarled, "What were you doing?"
"I should be the one asking you that!" Madeline shot back, her hand still mid-air from the strike, "How many times have I warned you? Stay away from Lari and Eddy! Stop bothering them!"
"I just—"
"What the hell is wrong with your head? Too thick? Should I hit you again?""
"You hit me in a police station," Vincent pointed out, voice now low and wounded.
"Yes, so what?" Madeline snapped, "And I should’ve done it sooner. Do you think this is a stupid game? Don’t you have any self-awareness?!"
At that moment, the main door of the police station slid open. A sharply dressed man in his early thirties stepped in. He carried a leather briefcase, looking weary as he spotted the commotion.
"Enough," the man said, trying to stay calm, "I’m Gabriel Perrault, legal representative of the Alvord family, here for Mr. Vincent Alvord. And hello, Miss Madeline. I didn’t expect to see you here."
Gabriel Perrault was one of the youngest members of the Alvord Corporation’s legal team. He had worked closely with Vincent on various tasks before. The latter purposely called him here instead of the other lawyers.
Madeline crossed her arms, lifting her chin, "Yeah, hello, Gabriel."
Gabriel gave her a short nod, "Still as fiery as ever."
"Still defending idiots like Vincent, I see," she rolled her eyes.
Gabriel exhaled slowly, looking between the two cousins. He restrained the extent of his dismay upon finding Madeline here. He was also surprised to see Brian, the famous right-hand man of Chairman Delaney.
This... spelled massive trouble.
"Miss Madeline, Mr. Vincent, can we not turn this into a family reunion brawl in front of the police?"
"I didn’t start it," Madeline said, shrugging before stepping backward, "Your client messed with someone who clearly wanted nothing to do with him."
Vincent rubbed the back of his head again and spoke up, "I didn’t hurt her. I just... I needed to talk to her. She ignored me, so I—"
"She ignored you! So why did you insist on bothering her?" Madeline cut him off sharply, "Vincent, go back and learn basic manners."
"Maddie, please," Lariette finally stepped forward, placing a hand on her friend’s back. Her touch was gentle, her voice soft, "That’s enough. Thank you."
Madeline turned to look at Lariette, her eyes still sparking with rage. The latter nodded to her quietly and mouthed she was okay.
"Ahem," the police officer coughed to bring the attention back to him, "Are we going to proceed or...?"
Gabriel cleared his throat, "Officer, I’ll cooperate fully on Mr. Vincent Alvord’s behalf. But please ensure this doesn’t spiral into a media circus. I hope we all understand what’s at stake."
The media was watching Chairman Alvord’s movements like a hawk, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say they did the same to Vincent.
Gabriel called the PR Department before coming to the police station, making sure nothing about this incident was leaked. Everyone was on edge as they monitored the situation.
The officer nodded, "Yes, we’ll respect that. And, Mr. Kingsley?"
Brian, who had been silent once Gabriel appeared, finally spoke when the officer addressed him. His voice was calm but edged like the sharpest blade.
"Mr. Perrault, you might want to let Chairman Alvord know that Chairman Delaney will not take this lightly. You’ve messed with his granddaughter, and you’re lucky you’re only dealing with this."
Brian was quite surprised when Chairman Delaney called him in a panic, saying Lariette was at the police station. He barely managed to get the elderly man from coming along, promising to handle the situation well.
Instead of sending someone from the legal team, he personally rushed to the police station.
Gabriel’s lips tightened as his eyes met Brian’s imposing gaze, understanding the additional weight of the situation.
If he handled this wrongly, Chairman Delaney wouldn’t hesitate to strike and cause more damage to the current fragile state of the Alvord Corporation.
"Understood."
Brian said nothing, his eyes drifting to Lariette. Leaning closer, he whispered into her ear with one hand covering his mouth.
Nodding, Lariette focused on the officer again. She said calmly, "I want to file the report now. For the record."
Vincent turned toward her, panic flashing in his eyes, "Miss Elsher, wait. I didn’t mean to scare you. You know how hard to reach Rudy, so—"
"Not my problem at all," Lariette cut in, her eyes sharpened and layered with frost, "Am I your messenger? I don’t think so. I’m the wife of the man you’ve been pestering."
Vincent blinked in dismay, looking as if he had been kicked by Lariette for a second time. His knee still hurt from landing hard on the ground.
"I’m filing the report," Lariette repeated, eyes staring at Vincent before moving to Gabriel, "But I won’t press charges yet. If you ever contact us again or even breathe in our direction, I will."
"Miss Elsher," Gabriel spoke, trying to soothe her anger, "Why don’t—"
"You two know I have the backing to make it worse," Lariette said pointedly, "I don’t think Chairman Alvord will be happy if my grandfather personally calls him."
Vincent gritted his teeth while Gabriel placed a warning hand on his shoulder, silently urging him to stop talking. Brian’s predatory gaze was on them, assessing their reactions.
Lariette smiled smugly, delighted to see the defeated look on Vincent’s face. Then, the officer took her statement down, silently feeling the lingering tension.
As her signature dried on the page, Lariette stood up and glanced at Brian, who nodded at her. Then, he spoke respectfully to the officer.
"We’ll leave now. You can reach out to my number if there’s anything else."
"Understood," the officer replied.
Lariette paid Vincent and Gabriel no attention, but Madeline glared at her cousin one last time before turning sharply on her heel. Brian escorted the two ladies from behind.
Vincent silently stared at their disappearing backs. Pursing his lips, he clutched his fists tightly, before they loosened in defeat.
