Chapter 47: Moonlit Devil (2)
The Creature’s clawed hand stabbed at the black-haired woman’s head, aiming to smash it like a watermelon.
However, before the attack could connect, the blonde-haired woman’s war scythe blocked the sudden attack.
(BANG)
Deflecting the blow, the Kelonian woman growled to her companion.
"Get a grip! If you lose it now, this thing, whatever the h*ll it is, will shred you to pieces!"
Luckily, her words managed to elicit a response, forcing the black-haired woman to snap out of her stupor.
"...Right."
Feeling the monstrous strength of the Creature, the Blonde-haired woman couldn’t help but be confused.
Wasn’t this supposed to be a 1-Star? How could he exert such strength?
It was then she realized it.
The monster before didn’t get stronger... No... It was the blond-haired woman who had gotten weaker.
In fact, her wounds, the ones they got from fighting the monster Blaine, sicced on them earlier...
Those injuries were starting to rot and fester.
The blonde-haired woman didn’t even know when it began, but that weakness caused her strength to drop exponentially.
Forced with no other option, the blonde-haired woman channelled her Mana Art and concentrated it on Creature before her.
The blonde-haired woman’s Mana Art was a particularly vicious one.
It allowed her to manipulate blood.
No matter the source, she could exert her influence over it, even if the blood was still inside someone else.
Although that use was far more restricted, she could at least manipulate the blood to flow out of injuries that were already inflicted.
Even the slightest cut would allow her to cause immense hemorrhaging to her victims and even upright kill them from blood loss.
And it just so happened that the Creature before her still had several injuries.
While none of them were actively bleeding, as they seemed to be covered by the grey substance from earlier, the blonde-haired woman felt she could force the Creature’s blood to flow out from several of them.
However, no matter how hard she tried, no amount of crimson red liquid seemed to come out.
Instead...
Her actions only seemed to increase the amount of grey substance on the Creature’s body.
As a horrifying realization dawned on her, the Blonde-haired woman pulled herself away from the Creature before again channelling her Mana Art.
But this time, she used it on the grey liquid.
The grey substance began to wiggle and writhe under her influence, meaning that the substance was none other than blood.
This could only mean one thing.
The blonde-haired woman stared at the Creature in disbelief.
"This thing... It’s an Unknown!"
The black-haired who had used the short time her companion had bought her to pick up her discarded crossbow looked at her companion in shock.
However, she, too, noticed that the ash-grey substance was none other than the Creature’s blood.
While Unknowns had several unique traits, such as multiple pupils or resembling horrible abominations, not all had these traits.
There were only three things that all Unknowns had without fail.
First, they were all aquatic species, and second, they could only exist in their world by passing through a tear.
While the third... Was that they all had grey-coloured blood.
"How is that possible?" The black-haired woman asked in confusion.
The thing before them had neither come from a tear nor an aquatic species.
In fact, only a few moments prior, that thing was still a human child.
How could a human turn into an unknown?
They had already seen the boy’s mana art.
It allowed him to create green energy constructs.
As for this being the effect of an artifact?
The Creature was utterly stripped bare of all his clothes and possessions.
He was fundamentally naked.
Even his sword was thrown off to the side after the black-haired woman removed it from her brother’s corpse.
So, was it the effect of a Core Spirit?
Core Spirits were so rare that only 3-Stars typically had them, and that too, only a select few.
It took consuming countless amounts of Mana Cores to even hope to acquire one.
Most 1-Stars struggled to fill their core, but acquiring a Core Spirit?
That was nigh impossible.
If someone could collect that many cores, they would have long since become a 2-Star or even a 3-Star.
However, not even that could explain the existence of nightmarish creatures.
A Core Spirit could only give unique ability.
Yet the boy displayed two.
The monster’s transformation and the ability to cause their wounds to fester and weaken.
Deciding that thinking about this would be a waste of time, the black-haired woman raised her crossbow and fired a bolt at it.
As long as they killed it, they could figure this out later.
But right now, their main priority was to simply survive.
Survive and kill the abomination before it does the same to them.
Just as the black-haired woman tried to pull the crossbow’s trigger, the Creature raised its other clawed hand and tightly clenched it.
Confused by the Creature’s seemingly non-sensical actions, the two women frowned.
That was when they felt it.
"AHHh!"
"ARRGHH!"
Feeling a sudden spike of pain shoot through their bodies, they couldn’t help but scream in agony.
It was a soul-rending agony, the likes of which they’d never felt before.
However, that wasn’t all.
Watching them with perverse glee, the Creature’s toothy grin grew wider.
Not only that...
The b*stard seemed to be laughing!
The monster was taking pleasure in their pain.
Unfortunately, the two were consumed by such mind-numbing agony that they didn’t even care enough to notice this.
Watching its victims suffer, the Creature loomed over them menacingly.
The Creature was easily at least eight feet tall with its elongated body.
As their torturer stood motionless, the two women began to slowly push past their pain and bring themselves back to their feet.
The black-haired woman raised her crossbow at the Creature and tried to fire a bolt again.
At least, she tried to.
Just as she lifted her arm and tried to aim, an ear-piercing sound rang out.
(CRAAAACK)
As she blinked her eyes, the black-haired woman noticed something weird.
Her crossbow... It was missing?
And that was when she saw it.
It wasn’t just her crossbow that was missing.
No.
Something else was gone, too.
Laughing contemptuously, the Creature opened its palm and dropped the item it was holding, letting it fall to the ground with a quiet thud.
That item was none other than the black-haired severed woman’s arm.
Looking at the empty stump on her torso, the Kelonian woman couldn’t help but regret her earlier choices.
Why? Why didn’t she just run?
It was then that she heard her companion’s voice.
"The cave! Run into the cave! I’ll try to hold it off long enough!"
The black-haired woman understood her companion’s intentions.
Running away was nigh impossible, but there was one way they could stall for time.
If they made it into the cave and collapsed the entrance, the Creature couldn’t follow them in.
Although that choice itself had its own set of problems...
But staying here was no different from certain death.
They had no other choice.
