Chapter 720

Chapter 720: Chapter 720

Yang Fan was so nervous he was about to die; his little heart seemed to leap right up to his throat.

But the girl he mistook for the Ghost King didn’t trouble him. Instead, she used a fabric sash to sweep up those mysterious entities and stuffed them all into the mist swirling behind her.

The countless mysterious forces in the mountains and forests were completely cleared with just a few flicks of the girl’s sash.

Her speed was incomparably faster than Yang Fan’s, rendering any comparison meaningless.

Yang Fan began to carefully retreat, planning to sneak away while this girl wasn’t paying attention.

But before he could take a few steps, the girl finished dealing with all the mysterious entities. The mist beneath her feet spread out, and she appeared right in front of Yang Fan.

Yang Fan was startled, instantly freezing where he stood, as all the hairs on his body stood on end.

"Miss, I meant no offense. Please carry on with your own matters," Yang Fan forced a strained smile onto his face as he spoke.

The girl’s features were fresh and pure, adorably so, with her big eyes shimmering like starlight.

There’s a saying that people with large pupils are intelligent. If this were true, then the girl floating on mist before Yang Fan must be exceptionally clever; her dark pupils were so bright they seemed to draw in one’s very soul.

The girl gazed at Yang Fan and suddenly chuckled lightly, "You don’t recognize me anymore?"

Yang Fan was taken aback and focused on her carefully. Wait... she did look somewhat familiar.

Suddenly, Yang Fan remembered.

Isn’t this the Yin God from Old Zhou’s villa?

"It’s you! How could you..." Yang Fan exclaimed in surprise.

He couldn’t grasp the situation. Wasn’t the girl sent away by Mr. Fan? How was she here?

"I’ve been consecrated as the New River Water God and have been on duty for some time now," the girl said with a faint smile at the corner of her mouth. "Just now, I noticed something strange about Li Mountain and came over to check it out. I didn’t expect to run into you, Big Brother. Quite a coincidence, huh?"

"I’ve been hesitating lately about whether to visit you and thank you in person. But I was worried that showing up suddenly might scare you. Now, I don’t have to agonize over it anymore."

Yang Fan stared in shock at the petite girl standing before him—though small, her figure was graceful—and sincerely said, "That’s wonderful. Although the feeling of mythology coming to life seems surreal, I’m truly happy for you. The past shadows have cleared, and you’ll surely have a good life ahead of you."

"Thank you, Big Brother. I’ve come to terms with it all now. I can’t resent my parents. Instead, I deeply appreciate all they did for me. Next lifetime, I’ll be the one to watch over them," the girl said. Suddenly, she broke into a gentle smile.

"Big Brother, you’re already caught up in it all; how can you still be surprised that mythology manifests in reality?"

"I’ve seen ghosts and mysterious entities often, but I’ve never encountered something worthy of worshipping in a temple before. You’re the first. I always thought they didn’t exist, or maybe they’re somewhere else—not in this world," Yang Fan replied.

"That’s somewhat correct, but not entirely," the girl said, tilting her head slightly as her gaze fixed on Yang Fan. "This matter is actually quite complicated. As someone at the very bottom of this hierarchy, I don’t know much. However, I do know that beings like me truly exist and vary widely. Some, like me, are officially consecrated, while others declare themselves gods. As for the higher-ranking ones—it seems like they aren’t here. No, wait, I shouldn’t say that. It’s more like I don’t know."

Yang Fan felt slightly awkward under her intense stare. "Why do you keep looking at me like that?"

"I want to make sure you remember what my face looks like this time so you won’t fail to recognize me again," the girl pouted playfully. "Lucky I didn’t choose to visit you earlier; otherwise, you might’ve been so scared you’d hit me with two sticks."

Yang Fan burst into laughter. "So, is being a River God fun?"

"Fun, but also boring," the girl said weakly. "I spend every day soaking in the river, watching fish live and reproduce, and observing humans fish. The only interesting part is the occasional appearance of unique people along the riverbanks and the daily stories of their families."

"That does sound dull, but you’re still a god, with the vast heavens and earth at your disposal, free and unrestrained," Yang Fan said.

The girl’s eyelids drooped. "But I already feel an intense monotony. It seems only slightly more eventful than living inside a wall. Big Brother, if I get truly bored in the future, can I come to visit you?"

"Of course! You’re welcome anytime. I’ll take you along to gather medicinal herbs," Yang Fan joked with a smile.

The girl nodded repeatedly. "It’s settled then!"

"Great!"

"Big Brother, you don’t know my name yet, do you?" The girl raised her brows mischievously and tilted her head as she asked Yang Fan.

Yang Fan froze briefly before forcing a laugh. "Honestly, I don’t."

He had never bothered to ask.

"I knew it. Big Brother, my name is Ji Dong’er—the Ji Family’s daughter born in winter. My dad chose it for me. He said the explanation behind it sounds nice, though the name brought me loads of embarrassment back in school," Ji Dong’er muttered gloomily.

"Those vile classmates would call me something like ’Excited Dong’er,’ or worse, ’Chicken Dong’er’ and such. But now, I really like the name—the Ji Family’s daughter born in winter."

"It’s a lovely name. Those classmates were just being ridiculous, teasing you for no reason. If we’re using such imagination, nine out of ten peoples’ names could be twisted into something silly," Yang Fan said.

Ji Dong’er smiled brightly, nodding gently in acknowledgment.

"Big Brother, let’s go help your mentor. The old locust tree’s roots have merged with the base of Li Mountain, so brute force won’t kill it," Ji Dong’er suggested.

"Then let’s hurry," Yang Fan said immediately upon hearing this.

"For a moment, I thought you might be the puppet master behind those mysterious forces, even suspected my unreliable mentor of planning to use me for a plot. Turns out, my perspective was too narrow," he added.

Ji Dong’er floated on mist, following close by Yang Fan’s side. She pouted and teased, "Big Brother, you’re really something. My face should be fairly recognizable, but you forgot me so quickly."

"By the way, why would your mentor resort to ’using a borrowed knife to kill someone’? Did something happen between the two of you?"

"Not really. I’m dating his granddaughter, so the old man’s been annoyed with me lately," Yang Fan said with a low chuckle.

Ji Dong’er giggled. "Big Brother, you stole your mentor’s precious granddaughter; of course he’s entitled to feel upset. But no matter what, you’re now not just his apprentice but also his grandson-in-law. He wouldn’t go too far with you."

"True enough, but the thought did cross my mind just now," Yang Fan admitted. "You lead the way; I can keep up."
