Chapter 712
Chapter 712: Chapter 712
Excessive fear made Yang Fan seem to fall into a state of frenzy. He smashed the intermittently screaming dry corpse head into pieces, nearly pulverizing it, before collapsing onto the ground.
Intense fear also triggered intense courage. Only after the enemy was dead did the shadow of fear quietly seep from deep within Yang Fan’s body. In an instant, he was drenched in sweat, soaking his back, while his hands began trembling.
His gaze was locked on the dry corpse head on the ground, its one eye still glaring wide open. Suddenly, he grinned and said, "What on earth are you anyway? How can something so ugly even exist? No, wait... sorry, dead people all look like this, right? I shouldn’t insult you. Maybe I’ll look worse than you when I die."
"But how come you were just lying there as a corpse and then got up again? Fine, you came back to life, but why the hell did you have to scare me? Aren’t you supposed to be a vegetarian? What’s the deal here? Did I suddenly look appetizing to you? Damn it, you pick your prey depending on who you see?"
No violent incidents had occurred nearby, nor were there any missing persons reported, which pretty much proved that this guy probably didn’t eat humans. He might rely on some other method for cultivation or survival.
But, he displayed intense hostility towards Yang Fan.
For the time being, Yang Fan couldn’t figure out whether he had angered the guy or if the guy had deliberately targeted him.
"Forget it, considering you’re as dead as you can be, I’ll forgive your rudeness," Yang Fan suddenly quipped with a dark joke.
After resting for a while, his energy, spirit, and vitality seemed to return to his body. His mind felt a lot clearer now, and his breathing became smoother. What really pleased Yang Fan, enough to make him crack another joke, was this:
His Inner Qi had grown!
The Inner Qi that had been nearly depleted had suddenly replenished by more than half.
Given the circumstances, there couldn’t be another explanation—it was clearly a reward for slaying this dry corpse.
The growth in his Inner Qi made Yang Fan find the gruesome, shattered dry corpse oddly less offensive to look at.
"Fanzi!"
"Mr. Yang!"
Two feminine voices called out sharply in the distance.
Yang Fan turned his head to look, barely able to make out two blurry figures cautiously inching toward him. Night had fallen quickly in this deep ravine, and it was now almost completely dark.
These two foolish women—at least carry a burning stick or something! Even a little bit of light would’ve been better than walking blindly in the dark.
"I’m here, nothing’s wrong, don’t come closer," Yang Fan called out.
He worried that if they saw the horrifying dry corpse on the ground, they might faint from fright.
"Ah? Fanzi, are you okay?" Fan Sisi shouted back.
It seemed like she hadn’t heard Yang Fan’s previous shout at all.
Yang Fan shouted again, "I’m telling you, don’t come over. It’s fine."
"But we don’t know the way back," Fan Sisi replied, sounding anxious. "It’s so dark we can’t see anything. We’ve lost our direction."
Yang Fan: ...
No wonder these two were stumbling around like blind people.
For a moment, Yang Fan didn’t know whether to call them brave or foolish.
"Stay right where you are and don’t move. I’ll come and get you," Yang Fan shouted.
Compared to these two, Yang Fan’s strength seemed slightly better. Although he still couldn’t see clearly, he could at least make out the vague outlines of the two figures.
Kicking aside the shattered dry corpse head near his feet, Yang Fan walked over to Fan Sisi and Yun Miaoyi.
"Didn’t I tell you to stay put in the stone cave? Why did you come running here?" Yang Fan reprimanded.
Fan Sisi sounded frightened, "We heard strange animal growls earlier and were worried something had happened to you. We didn’t dare stay in the stone cave anymore and decided to come find you."
"There were some weird sounds, true, but I don’t know what caused them. Anyway, I’m fine," Yang Fan replied.
He figured that even if the dry corpse was lying right by their feet, the two women likely wouldn’t notice it. So, he discreetly covered his tracks to avoid scaring them further when they were already on edge.
"Thank goodness you’re fine. Has anyone come up the mountain yet?" Yun Miaoyi asked.
"Not yet," Yang Fan shook his head. "Let’s wait here for a while; I’ll start another fire."
"You two are something else. Knowing it’s pitch dark outside, you could’ve at least brought a torch for a bit of light."
Fan Sisi weakly explained, "We were too scared to think straight. Listening to those strange noises—they seemed so close—and we panicked and just ran out. Midway we realized we couldn’t see anything at all."
"Fanzi, can you see?"
"Not clearly, just barely," Yang Fan replied.
He groped around, picked up some dry branches, and deliberately chose a spot far from the dry corpse to start a fire.
When the firelight flared up, a sense of safety surged out with the flames.
Even though the surrounding area was now nearly pitch black, the three sitting around the fire felt significantly calmer inside.
"Based on the time, they should have realized by now that we’re missing. Why hasn’t anyone come up yet?" Yun Miaoyi hugged her knees and spoke anxiously.
"Don’t worry, let’s wait a little longer," Yang Fan reassured her.
At this point, there was no sense in being impatient. Apart from waiting, they had no other options.
By the firelight, Yang Fan carefully inspected the wooden mace and ruler. After confirming they were undamaged, he cautiously stowed them away.
The earlier battle had demonstrated the remarkable power of these two weapons.
The wooden mace had surprisingly released a flash of lightning—no doubt due to it being made of Thunderstruck Wood.
As for the ruler, it emitted a thick, earthy yellow glow.
That glow, when it appeared, gave off a warm and soothing vibe, like a spring breeze.
That might be how it felt to humans, but to Evil Spirits, it must have been the exact opposite.
"Mr. Yang... Miao Yi... Miss Fan..."
Suddenly, a voice echoed faintly from the top of the ravine. It sounded far away.
"Someone’s coming!"
Yang Fan exclaimed softly, immediately standing up and responding loudly, "We’re here! We’re here!"
"Hey, we’re here!"
He shouted at the top of his lungs while waving a burning stick in his hand.
Finally, a voice rang out from above, "Over here! They’ve fallen into Siwa Cave!"
Yang Fan frowned slightly, "What did he just say this place is called?"
"I didn’t catch it." Fan Sisi shook her head.
Yang Fan looked at Yun Miaoyi, "I didn’t catch it either. Doesn’t this place have no name? I don’t remember it having one."
"I think he just said something like ’Siwa Cave’..." Yang Fan muttered. "Why does that sound so strange?"
