Chapter 699

Chapter 699: Chapter 699

Two hours of driving, neither too long nor too short, one in front was swaying his head to the rhythm of the songs with great excitement, while the other started snoring away soon after getting on the car.

Yang Fan was whispering idle gossip to Fan Sisi all the way, occasionally engaging in some playful teasing.

Even though the two in front couldn’t possibly see what was happening below, Yun Miaoyi sitting nearby could see everything; Yang Fan didn’t dare to be too blatant and could only make his moves behind their backs.

Although he kept up the small actions throughout the trip, there were limitations, and he almost couldn’t touch what he intended to.

It would be possible for Fan Sisi to lift her buttocks slightly, but if she did, Yun Miaoyi next to her would definitely notice.

After some playful banter and discussion of some idle topics, they arrived at Yun Miaoyi’s hometown, Yunjiawan.

Yunjiawan, officially known as Yunjiawan Town, usually if a place name includes a surname, it must have a major family with that surname; this rule is almost without exception.

In the entire town of Yunjiawan, the Yun Family is the significant household, their relatives spread across a good five or six villages.

Yun Miaoyi had Wang Daqiang stop the car in the town, and she bought almost a half-truckload of supplies, as if stocking up on inventory.

Five sheep, half a pig, two cow legs, and various other ingredients in different quantities.

Luckily Yang Fan’s vehicle was actually a small truck, capable of holding plenty.

If this were a small sedan, even just Yun Miaoyi’s items wouldn’t fit.

Yang Fan asked in confusion, "Do you need to buy so many things just for a visit home? Meat can’t keep for long, and while the rest can be cured, I seldom see cured mutton."

"No, it’s for hosting a village feast," explained Yun Miaoyi with a smile. "Every time something happens at home, my elders argue endlessly over who should contribute and how much money. Tired of listening to it, this time I decided to deal with the major expenses upfront, and they can simply chip in a little bit for the rest."

Then Yang Fan understood.

If there’s really an issue with the gravesite, there will undoubtedly be exhumation, and thus unavoidably a two-day banquet to invite the villagers to eat and drink.

Yun Miaoyi opened the box beside her, took out a pack of cigarettes, and went over to the driver’s seat, handing them to Wang Daqiang who was leaning against the window smoking, "Sorry for the delay, and for making Boss Wang drive a cargo run, this is a small token of gratitude."

"I can’t accept this. I’m just the driver; the boss is Fanzi. If you should give it to anyone, it should be him," said Wang Daqiang, immediately waving his hand.

Yun Miaoyi was taken aback for a moment, "Ah, is that so?"

Seeing this, Yang Fan chuckled, "Old Wang, since Boss Yun is giving it to you, just take it. No need for formalities."

"You’re the boss," Wang Daqiang said.

Yang Fan waved it off indifferently, "You drove, you put in the effort; take it for a little boost."

"Alright then," Wang Daqiang no longer declined and accepted the cigarettes.

After loading the truck, everyone set off again.

After leaving the town, the journey wasn’t far; it took less than twenty minutes to arrive at Yun Miaoyi’s home.

Yun Miaoyi seemed to have already notified her family beforehand as when Yang Fan and the others arrived, the living room was packed with people.

After listening for a while, Yang Fan roughly inferred that these people were actually Yun Miaoyi’s uncles.

Indeed, it was a large family!

The uncles and brothers added up to nearly twenty or thirty people.

And these, seemingly, were just the ones who were closer; not including those further away.

The Yun Family was very courteous to Yang Fan and his companions, offering them a meal as soon as they entered. Two elders took turns toasting to their health.

One was Yun Miao Yi’s father, and the other seemed to be the oldest elder in their clan.

However, both Yang Fan and Mr. Fan declined as they planned to visit the ancestral tomb later, opting for only a couple of light drinks.

This was the first time Yang Fan had seen Mr. Fan restrain himself in front of fine liquor.

After the meal and a brief rest, Mr. Fan suggested they go to the tomb to take a look and attend to the matter at hand.

"Mr. Fan, do we need to prepare anything?" asked an elder of the Yun Family, politely.

Mr. Fan waved his hand, "Let’s go have a look first, and figure out what’s going on. We’ll decide what to do afterwards."

"Alright."

The Yun Family elder then had someone prepare incense and candle offerings and led Mr. Fan and Yang Fan trio on their way.

The further south one travelled from Xin’an, the higher the mountains and the more temperate the climate became.

The ancestral tomb of the Yun Family was located on a mountain behind their residence, a thickly forested and seldom visited peak.

Yang Fan felt that once someone was buried here, it would be hard to find their resting place.

Once inside the forest, every direction seemed identical, and the woods were deep.

A path cleared by the Yun Family members led the group for over an hour before they finally arrived. An ancestral resting place like this was practically a fitness regimen for the descendants, with each visit equivalent to a training exercise.

Despite being located in a remote forest, the Yun Family diligently maintained the area around the tomb, which was clean and neatly bordered with green bricks.

Well-maintained as it was, the large hole on the tomb mound was still jarringly conspicuous.

The hole was half a person tall, winding down from the front of the tomb mound.

Mr. Fan, with a calm expression, circled the tomb mound twice and casually pulled a blade of grass, carefully inspecting the root’s color before inquiring of the Yun Family elder, "Big brother, has there been any bizarre homicide or missing persons cases around here recently?"

The Yun Family elder shook his head, "We haven’t heard of any in recent years; such things would definitely make the local news. We would have heard something, but there hasn’t been any word in these past few years."

"Something did happen about five or six years ago, though. But there was no hole like this at that time, and the culprit was caught. It was a crime of passion, revenge."

Mr. Fan nodded and looked around. He spoke to Yang Fan, "See that peak to the east? Go take a look up there and pay attention to any abnormal traces. Also, take some photos for me."

"...Okay," replied Yang Fan, looking at that pinnacle standing as straight as a finger pointing to the sky, gritting his teeth in assent.

Mr. Fan still seems to be holding a grudge against him. Could this be a deliberate ploy to give him a hard time?

The mountain was practically vertical; climbing it would surely not be easy.

He would have to assess the situation once there; if it was not feasible, he would have to give up.

"Mr. Fan, that mountain is not climbable; it’s too shaky and very dangerous," the Yun Family elder said.

Mr. Fan replied, "It’s fine, if he can’t make it up, just look around the base. He knows what he’s doing."

Yang Fan did indeed have a measure of it in his heart; he certainly wouldn’t do anything that might lead to his death.

"Big brother, can you find a few more people to check the two mountains behind here? Take some photos for me," Mr. Fan instructed.

"Sure, I’ll arrange it."
