Chapter 544: Chapter 544

When Yang Fan heard Da Qiang say there wasn’t much to worry about, his heart immediately settled, and since that was the case, he could now think of arranging some other affairs, especially since Fan Sisi had heated the food so hot, he certainly couldn’t just stand by and let it cool down, right?

Although it was impossible for the woman to actually give away her enticing hot dish to just anyone on the street, if Yang Fan didn’t show up, she would definitely be upset for real.

"Old Wang, since you’re alright, why don’t we just stroll around the county town for a bit, and then head back together in the evening?" Yang Fan suggested.

Wang Daqiang waved his hand and responded, "Fanzi, if you’re busy, go ahead with your stuff, don’t mind me. I’ll just wander around for a bit and head back by myself later. It’s not a big deal, and the transport is convenient."

"That works," Yang Fan considered and then nodded.

That was indeed more convenient, neither of them holding up the other.

"Then I’ll be off first. Fanzi, you do your thing," said Da Qiang, securing the cap on his water bottle and standing up.

Yang Fan nodded.

After watching Da Qiang leave, Yang Fan also rode his tricycle toward Mr. Fan’s location.

The location was one of the top high-end residential areas in all of Xin’an County, where the guards at the main gate stood straighter than any others in the area, stationed one on each side, resembling entry to some confidential place.

Yang Fan hadn’t even approached on his tricycle when one of the guards motioned for him to stop.

Yang sincerely brought his tricycle to a halt.

"What are you here for?" the guard stepped up to Yang Fan, eyeing him from top to bottom and asked.

Yang Fan answered truthfully, "I’m looking for someone."

"Looking for someone? Which building, and what’s the name of the resident?" The guard’s heavily dark-circled eyes surveyed Yang Fan once more, like a spotlight, seemingly trying to penetrate Yang Fan’s very nature with his fierce gaze.

Yang Fan didn’t argue and immediately took out his phone to call Mr. Fan. While waiting for the call to go through, he said to the guard, "Your community isn’t really suited for people making a hard living like me. I don’t know which building. How about you talk to your resident yourself?"

"Okay." The guard nodded emotionlessly, seemingly pleased with Yang Fan’s understanding.

Yang Fan was actually quite annoyed, even having thoughts of hitting someone.

He could understand the guard’s job responsibilities. Since they had such requirements at work, his actions were reasonable.

But Yang Fan was irritated by the guard’s scrutinizing stare, almost spilling out of his eyes. It was as if he wanted to pin Yang Fan to the ground with his eyelids and then stomp on him fiercely.

Mr. Fan’s call went through.

Yang Fan had briefly explained the situation before handing his cell phone to the security guard.

The guard took it expressionlessly, straightened his back, and hummed faintly twice before returning the phone to Yang Fan, "Third unit, turn right after entering the gate. Don’t wander around; if something happens, we can’t afford the responsibility, and neither can you."

This statement caused a fire to ignite in Yang Fan’s heart instantly. He raised his eyebrows and stared at the security guard, asking, "Big Brother, do I really look like a thief to you?"

"Whether you look like one or not is not for me to decide. You know what you do for a living. I’m just letting you know that our community prohibits the entry of outsiders," the guard said indifferently, tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Yang Fan shook his head and chuckled lightly, "Brother, to be honest, I don’t think you earn more than I do. You probably can’t afford a house inside these gates either. Don’t stand at the gate and think you’re one of the wealthy and powerful residents, looking down on us workers. Isn’t everyone a worker here?"

"I guess you also don’t have millions lying around in your account. You’ve taken this job to retire here, right? You see rich people coming and going. You think they consider you as one of their own, but do they really?"

"As a fellow worker, you despise ordinary people, and you’re bound to be criticized for it. To put it bluntly, you want to be their lapdog, but they probably think you’re not fit for such an upscale position."

Yang Fan went on a tirade, turning the guard’s face from purple to red. Seeing that he was about to lose his temper, the guard suddenly raised his hand and pointed at Yang Fan’s nose, "What do you mean by that?"

"What I mean? Don’t you understand yet? Respecting others is respecting yourself," Yang Fan huffed, "Move aside quickly, open the gate for me. I’m not like you people, standing at the gate earning a month’s salary with a mere glance. I’m busy."

"You get mad at me, be careful your esteemed job isn’t safe. Open the gate right now!"

"Go to hell!" the guard snapped, really losing his temper now.

The words Yang Fan said were neither warm nor fiery, but their lethality was extraordinary. It was as if he prodded the guard’s sensibilities, cursing his ancestors with great precision.

Seeing that the situation was getting out of hand, another guard quickly intervened, holding back the first guard, and opened the gate to let Yang Fan in. As Yang Fan slowly rode past the enraged and flushed guard, he deliberately sized him up, clicking his tongue and exclaiming, "I must say, now you really look the part. Keep it up, strive harder!"

"To hell with you! Stop right there, goddamn it, let’s have a proper talk today," the guard shouted at Yang Fan, his face a mix of red and white, filled with fury.

Luckily, the other guard was holding him back, otherwise he might have lunged at Yang Fan to bite him.

Yang Fan asked the other guard in puzzlement, "Isn’t he supposed to be penalized for treating a visitor like this? How do I file a complaint? I want to report him. This guy not only slandered me but now he wants to hit me."

"Big Brother, Big Brother, don’t stoop to his level. He’s just started a few days ago, doesn’t know any better," the other guard quickly said with a smile plastered on his face, "Big Brother, please go in. Don’t let him waste your time."

"I like your attitude, clearly a seasoned pro," Yang Fan commented with a smile.

After the compliment, he didn’t forget to take another jab at the enraged guard, "Spend more time learning from your senior here, otherwise with your so-called dedication, I really worry you might not make enough to cover the deductions at the end of the month."

The angry guard wanted to say something else, but the quick-reacting other guard covered his mouth in time.

"Big Brother, please come in. This kid is just a mess, he doesn’t know any better. He just started work and thinks he’s something special. Otherwise, who would take guarding a gate seriously? I sure don’t respect myself," the other guard confessed.
