Chapter 511: Chapter 511
Wang Daqiang spoke softly with a resolute expression, "Fanzi, no matter how much this thing is worth, I only know that I must give it to you, whether it is worth ten thousand or just one, I feel these things should be yours."
Yang Fan chuckled lightly, "What if this thing is really worth ten thousand?"
"It would still be yours," Wang Daqiang said.
Yang Fan smiled wryly, "Although I don’t understand how much this thing is truly worth, given its amount, even calculating it at the lowest silver price, it’s definitely worth a lot of money. You speak so frankly, so I’ll be direct as well. I accept your thanks, but this, this is too much."
Wang Daqiang said, "Fanzi, don’t be like this, these really are what I should give you."
"How about this? You take back half of these!" Seeing Wang Daqiang’s resolute attitude, Yang Fan also took a step back.
Wang Daqiang firmly said, "Fanzi, you wouldn’t really make me kneel down and beg you to accept them, would you? If you keep acting this way, I’ll kneel down right now, forget it, I’ll just kneel for you here."
Seeing that Wang Daqiang was about to really kneel down, Yang Fan was startled and quickly reached out to support him, "Why must you do this? I’ll accept it, accept it."
"That’s more like it. Now that you’ve accepted them, my heart feels at ease," Wang Daqiang said with a smile.
Yang Fan truly felt it was overly valuable.
If it were just a few dozen, he would have accepted them long ago without so much hesitation.
But with so many silver coins, although Yang Fan didn’t quite understand the price of such things, one should be several hundred yuan, and there might be several hundred of them inside this bag.
Such a big bag, it was certainly likely to exceed one hundred thousand.
This large amount of money was the reason Yang Fan had been so hesitant and wary to accept; accepting this gift seemed far too severe.
For the Wang Family to have saved up so much silver, their ancestors must have been well-off as well.
And it probably couldn’t be considered a minor wealth, at least it must have been at the level of a wealthy gentry.
"Fanzi, then I’m going to go now; I called someone today to buy the grains," Wang Daqiang said as he got up, "There’s also quite a bit of other grain at home that needs to be dealt with."
Yang Fan was still pondering over the issue of silver coins, and Wang Daqiang’s sudden departure caught him off guard, prompting him to blurt out, "Do you need help?"
"No worries, the traders who come to buy are first-class in service. I just need to tell them what I’m selling, I don’t even have a chance to do the work," Wang Daqiang said with a grin.
Although this honest and upright man tried his best to appear easy-going and nonchalant, Yang Fan could still see the deep tiredness in his eyes, as if his body was forced into a smile while his soul had already died.
Yang Fan patted his shoulder, "All right then, look ahead, everything will be alright."
Wang Daqiang nodded and left Yang Fan’s house.
Yang Fan saw him off and watched until he was gone, then returned home.
Looking at the bag on the ground that was even bigger than a rice sack, he was troubled for a moment.
Giving a gift that was too valuable made it awkward to handle.
Yang Fan opened the bag to take a look and was almost dazzled blind; he had never seen so much silver in his life.
Yang Fan did some research and figured out the item was a silver coin, but he didn’t discern anything beyond that.
After thinking it over, he called Old Zhou.
"Old Zhou, what have you been up to these days?" Yang Fan said, making a bit of small talk once the call connected.
Old Zhou cursed playfully, "Cut the crap. Just tell me what you need. Why are you being so polite? I’m not dead, nor am I looking to die. Every day is like a romantic adventure, and I feel like a groom every night. You have no idea how comfortable I am."
Their relationship was close enough that even a bit of courtesy from Yang Fan felt out of the ordinary to him.
"As long as you’re not dead, that’s good." Yang Fan laughed, "You’ve been around, do you know how much silver coins are going for?"
"You’ve got your hands on that rare thing, huh," Old Zhou said, somewhat surprised. "The prices vary a lot. The lowest ones are around eight hundred to nine hundred yuan now. The ones in better condition go for several thousand yuan, and the especially rare ones seem to go for over one hundred thousand."
"I know a guy who’s not seriously into his proper job; he spent one hundred fifty thousand on a particularly rare one. I don’t know much about it, but if you’ve got one, bring it over. I’ll take you to him. Though he’s a bit of a swindler, he definitely can’t swindle me. I guarantee he’ll give you a fair price."
"Alright, I’ll look you up when I get some time, I’m kind of busy these next few days," Yang Fan responded.
Old Zhou said, "Let me know when you’re free, but don’t forget our botanical supplies. In about ten more days, it’ll be time to deliver again, and I’m still quite short on the numbers here. I’ve played with eagles all my life, but this time I feel like this eagle is going to peck my eyes out."
"What happened?" Yang Fan felt a sudden sense of foreboding.
Whenever Old Zhou spoke like this, it usually wasn’t a sign of good news.
"Haven’t you noticed?" Old Zhou laughed. "You, my boy, might also get swindled this time. Didn’t you realize that botanical supplies are seasonal? Even without this year’s sudden price hikes and drops, the herbs listed in our contract will surely get harder to collect."
Yang Fan fell silent, then finally spoke softly, "Okay, I honestly forgot about that. You’re right, the big pharmaceuticals folks aren’t fools. They’ve definitely thought this through when they decided to have a fixed supplier. It’s really not easy making a profit here."
"Looks like I need to find some alternative sources soon. Just collecting like this isn’t going to work in the long run; we’ll probably end up breaching the contract, and I guess whatever big profit we made earlier might all go into this."
"Exactly, when misfortunes come, they come not singly but in battalions. This time it’s both our opportunity and our pitfall. Whether we can strike it rich will depend on our skill," Old Zhou sighed.
"This situation almost sounds like it’s influenced by some kind of metaphysics. I didn’t think of it, and you didn’t notice either. Clearly, there’s a problem here."
"It’s a bit late for other considerations now; we’ll just do our best," Yang Fan said.
The contracts had already been signed, and they had made money off them twice already, so what else could be said?
"Besides putting in effort, there really isn’t much else we can do," Old Zhou said, "and that’s that."
"Mm."
Just as Yang Fan hung up, Little Mother and the others came back.
It was unclear what they had bought, but they brought a ton of stuff, big bags and small.
"What’s all this?" Yang Fan asked.
Yang Yuan set down the cardboard box she had been carrying in the yard, patted her delicate hands, and said mysteriously, "I won’t tell you. Just wait till we leave, then you’ll find out. Hey, naughty brother, we’re leaving tomorrow. Aren’t you sad?"
