Chapter 348
Chapter 348: Chapter 348
"Actually, there’s a very simple way to shut me up." Despite being choked, Yang Fan still spoke with a grin.
Bai Mengzhu, her face dark with frustration, took a deep breath, "Speak!"
Her neat row of silver teeth was really about to be ground to bits.
"Let me touch it again," Yang Fan said with a smile.
"Go to hell!" Bai Mengzhu suddenly erupted in anger, her hands suddenly tightening.
Yang Fan sighed deeply, "Is this what they call falling out of love because of love?"
"To hell with falling out of love because of love. I’m on strike today, deal with it yourself!" Bai Mengzhu jumped off Yang Fan, threw the mop at him, grabbed her small bag from the table beside her, and strode away with her long legs.
Yang Fan couldn’t help but laugh.
This was just too funny!
A bit regretfully moving his neck, which had grown slightly stiff from Bai Mengzhu’s grip, Yang Fan flipped off the sofa.
He got up—the day was off to a good start.
Following the whole day of torrential rain yesterday, the sky was washed clean, stunningly blue, and even the sunlight seemed infinitely cleaner, pleasing to the eye and uplifting one’s spirits.
After freshening up, Yang Fan, in his slippers and holding a teacup, ambled into the breakfast diner diagonally across from his place.
Although Yang Fan hadn’t been in town for long, he was very familiar with the diner across the street.
He used to eat there often, and lately, even more so.
The diner was owned by a woman who looked to be in her early thirties, whom everyone called Duan Er.
How that nickname came about, Yang Fan didn’t know, but he went along with everyone else in calling her Duan Er.
Duan Er was very industrious; though her shop was a bit small, it was kept very clean, and the dishes were washed spotlessly, making both the sight and the meals enjoyable.
When Yang Fan entered, there was only one other table occupied by two people, who looked like they had come early to catch the big market, each carrying several bags of goods.
Faintly, Yang Fan thought he could even smell a medicinal scent.
"Er, a basket of soup dumplings and a refreshing side dish, please,"
Yang Fan lifted the curtain to the back kitchen and shouted to Duan Er, who was busy inside.
"Got it, take a seat," Duan Er responded cheerily.
She was dressed simply, with her long hair tied back in a ponytail, her bangs wet with sweat and separated into several strands, some sticking to her forehead, some curling up high.
Her attire was that of an ordinary village woman, but she had a very likeable baby face, which made her appear very approachable.
Yang Fan smiled and responded, choosing a table to sit down.
Duan Er was quick; Yang Fan had barely settled into his seat when she was already bringing over the dumplings.
"Be careful, it’s hot, just out of the steamer," Duan Er said sweetly to Yang Fan.
Noticing the teacup beside Yang Fan, she joked, "What, my place lacks the tea you drink? Bringing your own, huh? My tea is also home-produced; it has a good taste. Give me a chance, try it sometime."
"I had just drunk half of it and brought it along," Yang Fan laughed.
"As long as you don’t mind the rough tea from this place, have a seat. I’ll go get some appetizers for you." Duan Er joked with a smile and then turned towards the kitchen.
Her kitchen was tiny, with only a narrow ventilating window.
In such weather where slight movements could drench one in sweat, she worked by the stove in that environment. Even though she wore a very loose shirt, it became heavily soaked with sweat.
From the slightly open neckline, you could see the perspiration profusely running inside, where a pale pink undergarment was revealed by the soaked shirt, its style appeared somewhat retro, and it was the type with buttons.
By the time Yang Fan’s appetizers were served, the restaurant gradually began to fill up with people.
In no time at all, the small eatery was almost filled to capacity.
Yang Fan ate quickly, polishing off a steamer of buns in less than ten minutes.
The demanding voices of the customers in the restaurant gave him a headache, making it rather intolerable for him. He lifted the curtain of the kitchen intending to settle the bill and leave but saw Duan Er by the steamer biting her lip and shedding tears.
"Duan Er, what happened?" Yang Fan asked, surprised.
Duan Er quickly wiped her tears with the back of her hand and forced a smile, "No, nothing’s wrong. Have you finished eating?"
"Yeah." Yang Fan looked at Duan Er skeptically and said, "Duan Er, if there’s anything troubling you, just say it. Maybe I could help. We are neighbors after all, you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable asking."
Duan Er kept up appearances and waved her hand, "It’s nothing. I just prepared too few ingredients today. They’re rushing me from outside and I just got a little flustered... It’s nothing, really."
"And here I thought something was wrong." Yang Fan chuckled. "Look, I have no customers on my end now, so I’ll help you serve, and you rush the preparations. Don’t mind the chaos outside, there really aren’t that many people. We’ll have this sorted out in no time."
"That’s really kind of you, but you have your own business to take care of," Duan Er said, feeling ashamed.
"It’s alright, stop with the formalities, just go on with your preparations, I’ll help you serve," Yang Fan said. "At this hour, I don’t have customers anyway. Don’t be embarrassed about anything. If you really feel bad about it, you can just treat me to breakfast another day."
Duan Er hesitated for a moment, then broke into a smile and nodded, "Then I’ll have to trouble you."
"It’s no big deal." Yang Fan smiled, putting down his tea cup.
"Then, could you start by helping me with the tea? Let everyone wait a bit; I’ll be quick," said Duan Er.
"Sure!"
Yang Fan picked up the kettle and cups and went out, serving tea to each customer, inviting them to drink and relax for a while, and gently calming them down.
Actually, the customers hadn’t waited for long, but a group had started complaining loudly as soon as they entered, prompting those who arrived earlier to start clamoring as well.
Once the tea was served, the clamor quieted down immediately.
After Duan Er collected herself, she quickly steamed the buns with proficient movements.
She was just a bit flustered from the earlier commotion outside.
Yang Fan helped Duan Er serve for half an hour, helping her get through the busiest time, then he left the breakfast shop. Today was the day of the big market, and his place was likely to start seeing customers soon.
Back at his shop, it took less than ten minutes before a customer appeared.
The visitor was a dark-skinned young man with scruffy facial hair, wearing a tattered straw hat.
He looked completely unkempt.
He entered the shop empty-handed, looked around, and then offered Yang Fan a cigarette, "Boss, I heard that your place still accepts Codonopsis as usual?"
