Happy Little Farmer -
Chapter 304
Chapter 304: Chapter 304
Teasing Bai Mengzhu a bit really lifted Yang Fan’s spirits.
Making use of him was definitely going to come at a cost.
If he just let himself be used like a puppet, how could he be okay with that?
For lunch, he made do with some buns Bai Mengzhu had brought, and after a short nap, Yang Fan called Zhao Wu.
The herbal factory consistently required certain herbs, and he had accumulated about a truckload over the past few days, which needed to be delivered to Old Zhou’s warehouse.
The temporary storage he had set up in his courtyard was too small, and if he didn’t free up some space soon, it would be overflowing in a few days.
Zhao Wu arrived quickly; it was only about forty minutes after the call that his double-cab truck pulled up outside Yang Fan’s shop.
"Boss Yang, spare me some of your plain water," Zhao Wu said loudly as he roughly closed the car door and walked up with a cup in hand, wearing a bright red tank top.
Yang Fan smiled wryly, "In Xin’an, asking for plain water in a store might get you scolded. Here, have some tea first."
"Tea drinking is for the rich folks like you. Poor sods like us are only worthy of plain water!" Zhao Wu sat down at Yang Fan’s tea table with his legs crossed, looked around, and asked with a grin, "Get me some of your good tea."
"You make it sound as if you’re the only poor sod around. Here, try this. It’s our own tea. Apart from not having a brand, I think it’s pretty good in all other respects," Yang Fan said.
As someone who owned his own tea garden, he rarely had a chance to try tea from outside.
"Can’t taste the difference. A wild boar can’t appreciate fine chaff!" After taking a sip, Zhao Wu shook his head and lit up a cigarette.
Yang Fan chuckled, shaking his head; this guy’s self-deprecation was much harsher than his own.
"How’s business been these last couple of days?" he casually inquired.
"Not great. I’m starving here. You’d better let me cling to your thighs," Zhao Wu said, shaking his head again.
Yang Fan laughed and chided, "I’m now fully aware of your skill at playing the pauper. But I don’t have that much business to give you. At this rate, you’ll normally have about one trip a week, which won’t earn you much."
There was still no news from Pan Xiaoxia’s side, and Yang Fan had no idea how her collection was going.
Even with her business, Zhao Wu would only have about three trips every two weeks for him. How much could he earn from that?
"My dear brother, this is a big deal, okay? It’s stable," Zhao Wu said, slurping his tea and shaking his head vigorously. "For us truck drivers, getting steady business like this is priceless. Imagine being paid monthly; others would be green with envy. I’ve been making regular runs for you, and that hasn’t affected regular jobs, right?"
Yang Fan smiled and nodded, "If you say it’s big, it’s big."
"It is big, just like that woman I met last time," Zhao Wu said with a smile.
Yang Fan stared at the unkempt man, suddenly noticing that he wasn’t gloomy today but quite talkative instead.
"How big?" he teased, asking with curiosity.
Zhao Wu stretched out his right hand, claw-shaped, and gestured, "One hand wasn’t enough; I had to use both. That woman, damn, she was something else, and super forward too... Just thinking about it is beautiful."
"Not bad, your romantic encounter!" Yang Fan mocked, "I can see the word ’comfortable’ written all over your face."
"It was comfortable, but..." Zhao Wu glanced at Yang Fan, "I can’t discuss this with a guy like you. We have to pay for women, but you didn’t spend a cent and still ended up with someone so gorgeous. Man, comparing with others is really disheartening!"
Yang Fan smiled shyly, "I just got lucky; it’s not the norm."
"That modesty of yours, it’s truly annoying," Zhao Wu said shaking his head. "I’ve given up on having a lucky fling like yours. Now I just hope to find a decent wife, get married, have kids... my family is about to drive me insane."
"Where’s the stuff? I’ll get started right away."
"Just wait a second, we’ll talk after finishing the tea, what’s the rush?" Yang Fan said.
This guy had only had two cups of tea, was he that impatient?
Zhao Wu then sat down again.
The two chatted idly over tea for a while, only then did they start to load the truck.
The herbs that Yang Fan had sorted out in the yard just about filled one truck, and Yang Fan accompanied it to the county town.
At Old Zhou’s shop, Zhu Shanshan wasn’t there, only Old Zhou himself lying on a deck chair at the entrance, fanning himself leisurely with a palm-leaf fan, looking as comfortable as a retiree with a pension and nothing to do, showing no signs of a big boss’s demeanor at all.
Yang Fan couldn’t figure out how much wealth this guy actually had, but judging from how he had bought Codonopsis a while back, even if he wasn’t a millionaire, he surely had several hundred thousand.
Yang Fan instructed Zhao Wu to park the truck in the warehouse first, while he walked over to Old Zhou.
"Grandpa Zhou, stop sleeping, it’s time to get up and work." Yang Fan shook Old Zhou’s deck chair like rocking a baby’s cradle.
Old Zhou let out a groan and rolled out of the chair, "You got a full truckload that quickly?"
"I feel like you’re being sarcastic." Yang Fan pursed his lips, it had been almost a week since they opened, quick my foot.
"Sarcastic? I’m being serious; most people in the market probably can’t gather this much in a week." Old Zhou started laughing, "To put it in reform terms, your grassroots foundation is terrifying."
"Others make money, I don’t make money, huh!" Yang Fan shook his head.
Now things were relatively better.
But before this, he really hadn’t made much money; to maintain good relations with the herbal farmers, he had always offered them big discounts.
And that was the main reason he now had so many customers.
"Come on, let’s unload the goods and then we can chat at leisure." Old Zhou stood up unsteadily, shuffling in his slippers.
His posture really did resemble an old grandpa.
Yang Fan stared for a moment, then asked with a smile, "Have you been wrung dry?"
Old Zhou’s expression suddenly became awkward as he glanced around and said in a low, sneaky voice, "It’s a real mess, you see. I had nothing to do yesterday, so I went to the Han Palace to relax a bit."
"Diwu Ming recently found a few big horses from somewhere. I had never been with those white-skinned ones, so I boldly decided to take three, as usual. But man, those women could really work it... I was almost drained dry."
"Embarrassing to say, but when I left the Han Palace last night, it felt like heaven and earth had flipped over. It’s not just about feeling drained, your sister-in-law caught me in the act too, talk about bad luck."
Yang Fan tried to hold back his laughter, but it was... a bit hard to suppress.
Big horses, they’re reputed to be quite a handful.
Though he had never seen or been with any.
"You got caught by your sister-in-law?" Yang Fan asked in a low voice.
Old Zhou sighed deeply and nodded, "She deliberately ambushed me at the door!"
"You’ve made up by now, right?" Yang Fan asked.
"Made up my ass, caught red-handed, how can things be made up? The two of us, well, we’ve successfully advanced to partners." Old Zhou said with a snort of laughter.
