Chapter 124: Chapter 124 Consequences of a Good Deed

Although Yang Fan couldn’t figure out what the connection here was, Zhu Shanshan’s attitude gave him that intuition.

Zhu Shanshan, surprised by his remark, waved her hand and laughed, "How could that be? What does this have to do with you? Just stay put, I think it’s unnecessary for you to get involved. Tian Gaofei, that bastard, is not good news. I’ve heard recently he’s got a backer and some shady tricks up his sleeve, and he plays dirty too."

"Old Zhou’s tough-skinned, he generally won’t have any problems facing them head-on, but you getting involved might make you a target!"

Although Zhu Shanshan made some sense, hearing her say this only made Yang Fan more determined to go.

With a serious face, he said, "Sister-in-law, do I look like someone who would be ungrateful? You and Old Zhou haven’t hesitated to help me out regularly. Now that you’re facing trouble, should I just shrink away and not even show my face because I’m scared? Would I still be a human then? Even if I can’t help, I still want to see what’s happening."

Zhu Shanshan immediately became anxious, "Why are you so stubborn? Old Zhou really won’t have any problems. If you don’t believe me, I’ll call Old Zhou right now, and you’ll understand once you hear what’s going on."

"Sister-in-law, you stay here, I’ll go have a look!" Yang Fan walked away from Zhu Shanshan’s grasp and headed towards the back of the market.

He actually didn’t know where Tian Gaofei’s shop was, but the market wasn’t big, and he could easily find out by asking someone.

He had just turned the corner from the second alley when he saw Old Zhou striding towards him with a few men, all splattered with red and green paint as if they were performers in some avant-garde art.

"Fanzi, where are you heading off to with such a fierce look?" Old Zhou saw Yang Fan and called out happily.

Yang Fan, somewhat stunned, looked at these people and shouted, "I heard you were fighting, I was going to join you for the fight."

"Fight? That son of a gun turned into a mouse seeing a cat when he saw me. Come on, let’s go back and have some tea!" Old Zhou stepped forward, clapped Yang Fan on the shoulder, winked at the people around him, and said, "You guys can go back now, this matter is settled."

The surrounding men looked at Yang Fan unanimously, each displaying a knowing expression, and with a shout, they dispersed.

Their gazes made Yang Fan feel a bit odd, as if there was something in the way they looked at him.

"Old Zhou, what’s the beef with this Tian Gaofei?" Yang Fan curiously asked.

Old Zhou scoffed disdainfully and spat, "That jerk has only been in the market for a few years and already he damn thinks he can call the shots. A greenhorn who doesn’t know shit thinks he can boss us around? How could we possibly listen to him? I lost my temper and flipped a table, gave that guy’s ancestors a good cursing, and that was that."

Yang Fan nodded, "I heard from sister-in-law that this Tian Gaofei got himself a backer, it won’t be a problem, right?"

"Hey, what problem could there be? This society isn’t what it used to be, none of that clawing and biting stage anymore." Old Zhou said indifferently, "He’s got some backers involved in dodgy businesses, but I’ve got a silver bangle-supported background myself. Let’s see if he dares to bite me, we’ll see who bites the dust first."

Old Zhou and his wife both had some background connections, something Yang Fan knew.

But as to what kind of backing, Yang Fan was unclear.

However, listening to Old Zhou’s confident tone, there seemed unlikely to be any trouble.

"Come on, let’s not bother about these annoying matters. Let’s go for some tea!" Old Zhou handed a cigarette to Yang Fan, smilingly said, "By the way, what good stuff did you bring me today?"

"What good stuff can I bring? Just the usual things." Yang Fan lit the cigarette and laughed.

"What about those wild greens I mentioned before, did you manage to get some?" Old Zhou asked.

"We’ve got plenty," Yang Fan said with a smile.

The two men chatted and laughed as they returned to Old Zhou’s store.

Upon seeing them return, the trace of worry on Zhu Shanshan’s face instantly faded and was replaced by a gentle smile.

Yang Fan spent some time in the store chatting and having tea with Old Zhou and his wife, cleaned off the red paint on the wall, settled the day’s delivery, and then left Old Zhou’s store.

However, just a few steps out, Old Zhou hurried out of the store, stopped Yang Fan, and said, "Fanzi, there’s something I forgot to tell you. Your sister-in-law and I need to make a long trip in the next few days to explore a business opportunity."

"How about you don’t send out any shipments during this time? Take the goods back, and I’ll leave them all with you. I won’t let you hold the inventory for nothing; I’ll raise the price by two yuan per kilogram, not just two yuan for the whole lot."

"You both are leaving?" Yang Fan asked in surprise.

Old Zhou’s eyelids flicked upward as he said somewhat lamentably to Yang Fan, "Do I look like the decision-maker in my house? I can’t make such a big decision alone; your sister-in-law has to go. But she’s not as knowledgeable as I am about medicinal herbs, so I have to accompany her as her assistant."

Yang Fan nodded, "Holding the inventory is no problem, but there’s no need to raise the price. We’ve been cooperating for so long; if we don’t have that trust, wouldn’t that be a bit frightening?"

"I’m just worried you might sell the stock to someone else. Never mind, just do as I say. Let’s settle it this way, and I’ll give you a call when I get back," Old Zhou said, patting Yang Fan heavily on the shoulder, handing him a cigarette, and waving as he went back into the store.

Yang Fan stood rooted to the spot for several seconds, sensing something was off about today’s events.

Could it be that Old Zhou and his wife were planning to lay low for a while?

The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. He started his motor tricycle, deliberately detoured to the other side of the market, and casually entered a shop to ask around. It turned out that the situation was far worse than he had expected.

It was indeed because of him that this had happened.

Tian Gaofei, that bastard, had somehow obtained some information about him collecting goods from the mountain villagers, and he had warned everyone in the market not to buy goods from Yang Fan.

Old Zhou openly declared that he and Yang Fan were old buddies, and he couldn’t possibly comply with that request.

That was what irked Tian Gaofei, who then covertly had someone splash paint on Old Zhou’s store and blocked Zhu Shanshan alone on her way home at midnight, smashed her car window, and threatened her.

Knowing the cause and effect, Yang Fan immediately understood why Zhu Shanshan had stopped him from helping Old Zhou, and why Old Zhou had specifically instructed him to hold the stock during this period. The couple was worried that Tian Gaofei might target him and wanted him to stay away from the market for a while.

"Old bastard, so you cut off my path because of this, targeting my friend, right?!" Yang Fan stood at the street corner, his face ashen, as rage churned within him like a sandstorm.

He was powerless against Shen Lin riding roughshod over him because Shen Lin held significant clout, forcing Yang Fan not to do anything rash.

But for a bastard like Tian Gaofei, Yang Fan had no intention of holding back.

He drove his tricycle out, hid it in a small alley behind the market, then took a cab to the hardware and construction materials market to buy a pair of steel pliers, a fine steel dagger, along with a hat and a mask.

Carrying these "toys," Yang Fan returned to the market.
