Chapter 417: Chapter 417 The Main Text Concludes [Part 1]
Carson Dunn looked at James Thompson and Julia Land’s cold expressions, his heart sinking.
"Uncle, Aunt, I’m sorry, it’s my fault for not handling this matter well today, and letting Little Dale be wronged," Carson’s voice was low and sincere, "Could the wedding still go ahead?"
Levi Dunn stepped in quickly to speak for his son, "In-laws, let’s sit down and talk thoroughly first, the time for the wedding ceremony hasn’t arrived yet."
Julia Land said indifferently, "Let’s go inside and talk."
Carson Dunn let out a breath of relief.
The makeup room was spacious, sitting down inside wouldn’t feel cramped for both families.
Dale Land looked at Carson Dunn and her parents’ expressions in confusion, a sinking feeling creeping into her heart.
Carson Dunn’s eyes carried an apology, "Uncle, Aunt, Little Dale, I’m truly sorry. I didn’t know Harper Woods’ family would choose today to come and cause trouble."
"Two years ago, the six of us went mountaineering; two of them were women brought by my dormmate Dylan Langston. One of the women was Harper Woods."
Carson Dunn showed a bitter smile, "Harper was standing on the steps taking pictures when a small snake darted out. Startled, she instinctively jumped aside, lost her balance, and was about to fall down the mountain. I was close to her at the time and reached out to grab her, but I stepped on a moss-covered step myself."
Lorenzo Thornton froze when he heard this—she hadn’t realized she had almost lost her son two years ago.
"My foot slipped on the moss. As I fell down the mountain, I grabbed onto an outcropping rock, but the rock couldn’t hold my weight. As the rock started loosening, Harper gave me her hiking staff to grab onto," Carson continued solemnly.
"In the face of death, one doesn’t have time to think much. I grabbed the staff, stabilized myself for a moment, and then grabbed onto a tree root with my other hand."
Carson spoke helplessly, "Due to the weight of me holding the staff, Harper herself fell to the bottom of the mountain. By the time we reached the bottom, she was barely alive. Shockingly, she confessed her feelings for me right before she passed. And then, the story turned into Harper sacrificing herself for me out of love."
Even he himself felt unlucky about the whole ordeal.
But in others’ eyes, it had spun into a tale of Harper Woods saving him out of love.
After listening to Carson Dunn’s story, Dale Land roughly pieced together what had caused today’s wedding mishap.
Julia looked at her daughter, "Dale, Harper Woods’ family came to cause trouble today. Do you want the wedding to continue?"
James Thompson frowned deeply. When Carson mentioned Harper Woods’ name, it triggered a memory. Though enduring physical pain, he commanded sternly, "This wedding is canceled."
Julia turned to look at James Thompson in surprise, but as husband and wife in unity, she had no intention of opposing his decision.
James stood up, "Dale, we’re going home."
Julia followed him as they both rose to leave the makeup room. Dale Land hesitated, looked at Carson Dunn briefly, then turned to bow in apology to Lorenzo Thornton and Levi Dunn. Lifting her wedding gown, she followed her parents out.
To be honest, her thoughts were in turmoil, and it was clear to her that her father was angry.
The Dunn family hadn’t expected James Thompson to so decisively call off the wedding.
Lorenzo Thornton and Levi Dunn’s expressions darkened considerably.
Lorenzo tried to dissuade them, "Mr. Thompson, doesn’t this matter seem like it’s not entirely my son’s fault? It’s mainly that family’s outrageous behavior. Canceling the wedding seems too..."
"This ends here." James Thompson’s voice was calm yet left no room for negotiation.
James wasn’t someone who got angry easily, but this time something clearly struck an intolerable nerve.
Julia didn’t say much either; since he had decided to cancel the wedding, she would support his choice.
"Sophia, please help me take care of Alice," Julia said to Sophia Hart. Then she took James Thompson’s hand and walked out of the makeup room.
The two entered the car.
Julia took a bottle of medication from her bag, poured out three pills, opened a bottle of water, and handed them to James.
Julia stayed silent, knowing James was struggling with discomfort at the moment.
She called Jasper Winters, "Prepare the plane and arrange for Dr. Road..."
James reached out to hold her phone. His expression softened, and he shook his head, "No, don’t worry the kids."
Julia looked at James, her heart aching. She held his hand and said softly, "Alright, then we’ll head back to the hotel first." She spoke through the phone to Jasper Winters, "No need to prepare the plane for now."
On the other end of the line, Jasper still felt it best to notify Dr. Road.
James leaned against the car seat, closing his eyes to regulate his breathing.
Julia could see he was trying his best to endure, to avoid looking too vulnerable.
The car moved steadily along the road, and she kept holding onto his hand.
Meanwhile, outside the wedding venue, Tara Young glanced at Dale Land, who had gotten into the car with her wedding gown. Then he drew back his gaze, "Let’s go back."
James Fitzgerald nodded as he opened the car door for Tara Young.
It had been a day meant for celebration, yet it ended like this.
Back in the makeup room, Carson Dunn, expressionless, made several phone calls. He needed to find out who had informed the Woods family about his upcoming wedding.
Levi and Lorenzo Dunn endured the humiliation as they went out to send off their guests.

On the way to the hotel, James opened his eyes and said faintly, "Julia, do you remember the surgery Little Dale underwent two years ago? The donor was Harper Woods."
Julia frowned slightly upon hearing this. "You’re worried Carson Dunn’s intentions toward our daughter aren’t sincere," she said.
James’ lips were pale, devoid of color. "Yes."
Back at the hotel, Julia urged James to lie down and rest. "I’ll talk to Dale about this—get some sleep first," she told him.
The drugs he’d taken had both sedative and pain-relieving effects.
James murmured an acknowledgment, closed his eyes, and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Julia leaned down and planted a kiss on his lips before heading out to see Dale Land.
In the room next door, Dale had already taken off her wedding gown, with Sophia Hart keeping her company.
Alice Thompson seemed to sense something was amiss. Sitting quietly beside Dale, he behaved very obediently.
Andrew Benson poured a few glasses of water for them.
Dale Land accepted a glass and said, "Thank you, Uncle Andrew."
Julia walked into the room.
Seeing that James wasn’t with her, Dale asked worriedly, "Mom, where’s Dad?"
"He has something he needs to handle right now."
Sophia asked Andrew Benson to take Alice Thompson out to play.
Once only the three of them remained in the room, Dale finally asked, "Mom, why was the wedding canceled?"
If it was merely because Harper Woods’ family caused a scene, her father wouldn’t have insisted so adamantly on canceling.
Julia had no intention of keeping her daughter in the dark. "Two years ago, you underwent an organ transplant surgery. The donor was Harper Woods."
Dale Land’s face instantly lost all color.
Julia reached out and embraced her daughter, tears welling in her eyes.
Her daughter had suffered since birth—taken away by Christopher Moore right after she was born.
When she finally came back to them, she was kidnapped again. It felt as though heaven had been cruelly singling her out. Multiple surgeries later, her facial appearance was restored, but the drugs had left lingering issues with her health.
Fortunately, Dale had always been inherently optimistic, often comforting them as parents.
Her daughter’s words of optimism from years ago still echoed in Julia’s memory.
"Mom, there are so many people in this world who die because they can’t afford treatments, but I’m lucky to still receive care—it’s a blessing."
Dale Land simply cried in Julia’s embrace briefly before lifting her head. Julia wiped her tears away.
"Mom, I’ll go talk to Carson Dunn myself. This situation made you and Dad worry—I’m sorry," Dale said resolutely.
