Chapter 55: Ana is jealous

He quickly replayed their last interactions in his mind, searching for a reason, but nothing stood out.

The sadness in her eyes wasn’t just general distress—it was directed at him, and that realization unsettled him more than he cared to admit.

His gaze sharpened as he took a small step closer, lowering his voice but keeping it steady. "What are you doing here?"

Ana flinched, just slightly, as if she hadn’t expected him to speak yet.

Her fingers tightened into fists, then relaxed just as quickly.

She swallowed hard, still avoiding his eyes, before finally shifting her weight and straightening a little.

"I..." Her voice was barely above a whisper, strained, uncertain.

She hesitated, her throat working around words that refused to come easily.

She looked away—not toward an escape route, not toward the voices she had been listening to, but down at the ground, as if it held the answers she couldn’t find.

The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken meaning.

Gon didn’t move, didn’t push—he just watched, waiting, his own heartbeat loud in his ears.

Whatever had brought her here, whatever had caused that sadness in her eyes, he needed to know.

And she needed to tell him.

A cold, sad look lingered on her face, her eyes distant, almost hollow.

But she didn’t lift her head right away. She didn’t explain. She simply held the bow for a moment longer before straightening, her sad eyes flickering up to meet his.

Gon took a step forward, his confusion deepening. "What are you doing here, Ana?" His voice was firm but not harsh, laced with the same uncertainty that gnawed at him.

Ana finally lifted her gaze, but the sadness in her eyes hadn’t faded. If anything, it had settled deeper, like a weight she couldn’t shake off.

Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but all that came out was a barely audible murmur.

"Nothing, Lord Gon."

Gon studied her, trying to find an answer in her expression, but she gave him nothing more. Just that cold, sad look. Just that unfamiliar distance.

"You were in the bushes watching us," he pointed out, his voice edged with something firm but not unkind. "There’s no way that was nothing." His sharp gaze searched hers, refusing to let her brush this aside. "Tell me what’s really happening."

Ana didn’t meet his eyes. Instead, she inhaled softly, as if steadying herself, and when she finally spoke, her voice was careful, measured—too controlled.

"I’m sorry, Lord Gon," she muttered again, and that title sent another jolt of discomfort through him. "I was just walking through... and I saw you and the girl, and I was curious..."

She trailed off, her words dissolving into the heavy silence between them.

Gon waited, expecting her to continue, to explain—but she didn’t. She just stood there, shoulders stiff, hands clasped together as if she was bracing herself for something.

"So you stalked us," Gon finished for her, his tone sharper now, though not with anger—just the lingering frustration.

Ana flinched, but she didn’t argue. Instead, she remained still, her head still bowed, her hands tightening into fists at her sides.

Then, after a tense pause, she finally spoke.

"Yes." Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper. "I saw how she... kissed you."

Ana’s head remained lowered, her posture rigid, as if she were bracing for something—his reaction, his dismissal, maybe even his indifference.

But Gon couldn’t ignore the way her fingers trembled slightly, how her entire frame seemed smaller, like she was trying to shrink away from this moment.

For the first time since he found her behind those bushes, he understood. This was why she looked so sad. This was why she was acting so strangely.

She had seen it.

And it had hurt her.

Gon didn’t fail to notice how venomous the word she sounded when Ana said "she". It wasn’t just a simple statement—it was laced with something sharp, something bitter.

His eyes narrowed slightly, studying her. She still wasn’t looking at him, her head bowed, her shoulders rigid. The tension in her posture, the quiet tremor in her voice—it all pieced together in his mind.

Then, tilting his head to the side, he asked the question that had just formed in his mind.

"Wait... are you jealous that she kissed me?"

The moment the words left his mouth, Ana’s entire body went still.

Not a single breath, not the slightest twitch—just complete, frozen silence.

Then, after what felt like an eternity, she exhaled sharply, almost like she had been holding her breath.

Ana shook her head quickly, almost too quickly. "No, Lord Gon," she said, her voice firm but unconvincing.

But her body betrayed her.

Her hands were still clenched into fists, her shoulders tense, and she refused to meet his gaze for more than a second.

Every little movement—the stiffness in her stance, the way she shifted her weight as if she were uncomfortable in her own skin—told him everything her words wouldn’t.

She was jealous.

She could shake her head all she wanted, but Gon wasn’t blind.

Gon exhaled slowly, his frustration ebbing into something more thoughtful.

He had been so caught up in the moment, in the tournament and the system , that he hadn’t stopped to consider something important—he had never actually talked to either of them about what had happened.

He needed to clear the air, to talk to both Ana and Elsa and make sure everyone understood where they stood.

More than that, he needed to set boundaries.

His gaze softened just a little as he looked at Ana, who still hadn’t fully relaxed.

She was upset, that much was obvious, but this wasn’t just about jealousy. It was about understanding. About making sure no one got hurt.

Perhaps after talking, Ana and Elsa would understand. They would know not to get jealous when he was with other women.

It wasn’t like he was trying to hurt anyone, but he wasn’t about to tiptoe around people’s emotions every time he interacted with someone else.

His gaze returned to Ana. She was still avoiding his eyes, her hands still clenched at her sides.

"Okay," he said, his tone quieter now. "Let’s go inside. I’ve missed you."

Ana didn’t respond. She didn’t nod, didn’t meet his eyes—just turned and wordlessly followed behind him, her footsteps light but deliberate.
