Chapter 52: Dina’s challenge

For a moment, Gon was silent.

Then, a chuckle rumbled from his chest, growing into full-blown laughter.

He shook his head, amused by her boldness, then suddenly straightened, his expression shifting into something more serious—more challenging.

"Go ahead then," he said, his voice low and daring.

In the same breath, his body tensed, and an invisible shimmer surrounded him as he activated Iron Veil.

A subtle yet powerful energy wrapped around him, forming an invisible armor that hardened his skin like reinforced steel.

His smirk deepened as he stared her down, waiting to see what she would do next.

"What?" she muttered, her voice quieter now, uncertainty creeping into her tone.

Gon stood firm, completely unbothered. His golden eyes gleamed with challenge, and he gave a small shrug. "Go ahead. Stab me."

Dina hesitated, gripping the knife a little tighter. She looked at him for a long moment, weighing her options, her mind racing.

She exhaled sharply, her shoulders relaxing slightly.

Then, after a few more seconds of contemplation, she let her hand drop, releasing her grip on the knife.

The blade fell harmlessly to her side, and she took a small step back.

"Tch," she clicked her tongue in frustration, but there was no real anger behind it. Instead, her expression softened into something between irritation and admiration.

Gon tilted his head slightly, watching her with curiosity. "Why didn’t you stab me?" he asked, his smirk still lingering, but his eyes searching for something deeper in her answer.

Dina met his gaze without hesitation. There was no fear, no regret—just a calm certainty in her expression. With a small shrug, she simply said, "Because I didn’t come here to stab you."

Gon studied her for a moment longer, then let out a soft chuckle. "Then what did you come here for?" he asked, crossing his arms, intrigued by her answer.

Dina dusted herself off, her smirk returning as if the entire exchange had been nothing more than a casual game.

"Fresh air, what else?" she said nonchalantly. "And then I ran into you and decided to have a little fun."

Gon chuckled, shaking his head. "Well," he said, his golden eyes gleaming with mischief, "there are better ways to have fun with me."

Dina paused mid-motion, raising an eyebrow at him. The playful lilt in his voice, the way his smirk deepened—it was clear he was teasing her, but she wasn’t the type to back down.

Dina narrowed her eyes slightly, intrigued but not entirely convinced. She tapped her fingers against her arm, pretending to consider it.

"Such as?" she pressed, tilting her head.

Gon’s smirk deepened. He didn’t answer right away, letting the silence linger just long enough to spark her curiosity.

Then, with a playful glint in his eyes, he leaned in ever so slightly and said, "Come closer, and I’ll show you."

Dina chuckled, shaking her head slightly before stepping closer, closing the small distance between them.

She stood just a breath away now, her eyes locked onto his, searching for any hint of hesitation.

Gon’s heart pounded in his chest, each beat loud and insistent, but his face remained perfectly calm. He held her gaze with steady confidence, a slow smile creeping onto his lips.

Then, with a teasing glint in his eyes, he asked, "Do you want to kiss me?"

Dina’s breath hitched, and her entire body went rigid as if she had been struck by lightning.

Her wide eyes locked onto Gon’s, searching for any sign that he was joking, that he was just teasing her like he always did.

But there was no laughter in his gaze this time. His smirk held something different—something confident, almost daring.

She swallowed hard, but her throat felt dry. "What?" she whispered, barely able to push the word past her lips.

Gon tilted his head slightly, his smirk deepening. "You heard me," he said, his voice smooth and steady.

He took a slow step closer, closing the small gap between them.

Dina’s mind raced, struggling to process what was happening.

His dark eyes held a question, a challenge, as if he was waiting to see what she would do.

She felt heat rush to her cheeks, and her hands curled into fists at her sides.

Did he mean it? Was he serious? And more importantly—did she want him to be?

Dina’s initial shock melted into something else—something more familiar.

She blinked rapidly, forcing herself to break free from the strange spell Gon had cast over her.

The air was still thick between them, humming with unspoken tension, but she refused to let it shake her.

A slow exhale escaped her lips as she rolled her eyes, tilting her head slightly in mock exasperation. "Why would I wanna do that?" she said, her voice laced with sarcasm, though she couldn’t quite hide the way it wavered at the edges.

She crossed her arms over her chest, more out of self-defense than defiance.

Gon’s smirk deepened, and a glint of mischief flickered in his dark eyes as he took another slow step toward her.

"Oh, don’t tell me you didn’t think about it when I held you the other time," he teased, his voice smooth and dripping with amusement.

Dina scoffed, tilting her head slightly as she crossed her arms tighter over her chest. "Why would I think of that?" she asked, her tone laced with sarcasm.

Gon exhaled sharply, his smirk twitching as a flicker of impatience crossed his face.

He had been enjoying this little back-and-forth, but now she was just being difficult.

He didn’t mind a challenge—he actually liked it—but Dina had a way of twisting words, turning everything into a game where neither of them could win.

"Do you always ask questions?" he muttered, running a hand through his hair as he fixed her with a pointed look. His patience was wearing thin, and she could see it in the slight crease of his brows.

Dina’s lips curled into a mischievous smirk. She leaned in just a bit, enough to make it obvious that she was enjoying this way more than she should. "I don’t know," she teased, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "Do I?"
