Chapter 50: The duke’s son is scared of a girl
The air was cool and crisp, carrying with it the faint scent of damp earth and the freshness of a night untouched by the world’s chaos.
As he walked further into the courtyard, his eyes were drawn to the ring in the center.
It stood there, bathed in pale moonlight, its edges casting faint shadows on the ground.
The sight of it stirred something in him—a mix of memories and emotions that bubbled to the surface.
He could almost hear the echoes of the fight that had taken place there not long ago:
Gon stopped a few steps away from the ring, his gaze locked on it.
The moonlight painted it in shades of silver and shadow, making it seem almost alive, as if it were calling to him.
His lips curved into a faint smirk, and a thought, half-amused and half-determined, crossed his mind.
"I’ll be in you again tomorrow," he mused, the words echoing quietly in his head like a promise to himself.
Before he could lose himself in the moment, a voice, smooth and laced with humor, broke the silence.
"Hopefully you get me," it said from behind him, light and unmistakably feminine.
Gon’s heart jolted, his body tensing instinctively.
He spun around, his eyes wide with surprise, only to find himself face-to-face with Dina.
She stood there with her arms crossed, her stance casual but confident, her sharp gaze fixed on him.
The moonlight caught her features, casting a soft glow over her tan skin and the wild strands of her dark and green hair.
Dina—the girl who fought with the multiple clones.
She looked far more relaxed than she had during the tournament.
The tense, sharp energy she had carried into the fight was replaced by an easy confidence, her body language loose and unguarded.
Her arms rested casually at her sides now, rather than braced for action.
Even her expression, which had been so focused and intense earlier, had softened into something calmer, almost playful.
Her hair was different too—pulled up into two neat bundles on either side of her head,.
The new style framed her face, accentuating the high curve of her cheekbones and the sharp glint in her eyes that seemed ever-present.
Gon straightened up, masking his initial surprise with a calm expression.
Her gaze lingered on him for a moment, sharp yet unreadable, as if she were sizing him up even now, outside the ring.
"Oh yeah? What makes you so eager to fight me?" Gon shot back, his tone defensive as he narrowed his eyes at her.
He crossed his arms over his chest, standing his ground.
Dina chuckled softly, the sound low and almost teasing. "Who says I was talking about the tournament?" she replied, her voice carrying an edge of mischief.
Before he could respond, she moved with a fluid grace that was almost hypnotic.
She slinked over the low fence surrounding the ring, her movements smooth and effortless, as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
The faint scrape of her boots against the wood was the only sound that accompanied her.
She landed lightly on the other side, straightening up and tossing a glance back at Gon, her lips curved into a sly smile. "You’ve got a one-track mind, Gon," she said, her tone playful but with a hint of something else—something that made it hard to tell if she was taunting him or testing him.
Gon blinked, momentarily thrown off by her boldness, but quickly steadied himself. "Then what are you talking about?" he asked, his voice firm, though there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.
Dina leaned casually against the fence now, her posture relaxed but her gaze sharp, as if she enjoyed keeping him on edge.
Gon’s mind raced as he studied Dina, trying to decipher her intentions.
You’re quick in the ring but slow outside it. Dina said with a smirk.
I’m quickly enough to know that’s an insult. Gon replied, his fists curling.
Dina saw this movement and smiled. What will you do about it?
She said it in a way that made it seem like she was baiting him.
She wants to fight me? Gon thought and uncurled his fists.
Maybe this wasn’t just a casual encounter.
Perhaps she was here to test him, to figure out just how far she could push him before the tournament resumed.
After all, fighters often sought to gauge their opponent’s limits, and Dina was no stranger to strategy.
Her relaxed demeanor might’ve been a front, a way to lower his guard while she searched for any weakness she could exploit later.
But another thought crept into his mind, one that made his muscles tense instinctively. What if she wasn’t just testing him?
What if she felt threatened by him? Gon knew he wasn’t one to back down from a fight, and maybe his performance earlier had likely caught her attention.
What if Dina saw him as a real obstacle, someone who could stand in the way of her goals in the tournament?
Maybe this wasn’t a friendly exchange at all—maybe she was here to get rid of him before he had the chance to face her again in the ring.
Her sly smile and the way she had slinked over the fence only added to his unease. Her movements were deliberate, calculated, like a predator circling its prey.
Either way, Gon had already made up his mind—he wasn’t going to play along.
Whatever Dina’s intentions were, whether she wanted to test his limits or eliminate him entirely, he wouldn’t be participating in her game.
He stood firm, his jaw tightening as his eyes stayed locked on her.
"What? Are you scared?" Dina teased, her voice dripping with mockery as she leaned forward slightly, her smirk widening when she noticed the hesitation flicker across his face.
Her words hung in the air, sharp and cutting, like a challenge meant to provoke him.
Gon’s expression remained unreadable. He said nothing, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a reaction.
He simply stood there, unwavering, letting her laughter wash over him.
Whether she thought him weak or afraid didn’t matter.
He wasn’t going to be drawn into whatever game she was trying to play. Not tonight.
Dina laughed, the sound light but tinged with mockery, echoing in the quiet courtyard.
"Really? That’s it?" she asked, shaking her head as if disappointed. "I expected a little more from you, Gon, but unfortunately, the mighty Duke’s son is scared of a girl,"
