Gonna Be a Demon King! -

Chapter 99: Journey’s Routine
Gravitational Adaptation turned out to be immensely more difficult than Xaren had assumed it would be.
Even with his Child of Gravity skill, he still found the three-hour subjection to immense artificial gravity to be gruelling beyond expectation.
One could only imagine what the others, who didn’t possess a skill like his, must have been feeling.
Besides the adaptation training, the group of fifty recruits was also given a brief technological orientation.
They were taught how to operate basic technological devices that were commonplace not just among demons, but among virtually every race involved in interstellar activities.
Among the first things they were instructed on was how to use basic Communication Devices—essentially, phones.
Xaren had seen devices like those in his past life, but they had been rare and very expensive to acquire in his world, meaning he had never managed to get one for himself.
As such, he couldn’t help but feel a genuine sense of culture shock when he discovered that the majority of demons possessed at least one of these devices.
There were even some demons who owned multiple phones—a different phone for a different region of the galaxy—something he would have considered a ridiculous luxury in the past.
Each Communication Device operated by using magical radio signals that travelled at the speed of light, with the information they carried facilitated by the use of interstellar satellites orbiting planets or stationed at various points in space.
That was as much as they were taught during the session, which wasn’t surprising considering the orientation was intended to cover only the very basics.
As for why the crew had even bothered taking the time to teach them this, the answer became obvious very quickly—it was to prevent the fifty recruits from getting hopelessly lost aboard the ship during the several weeks they would spend travelling through deep space.
To aid in that, the phones they had been temporarily lent for the duration of the trip came preloaded with a mapping function that detailed the layout of the ship.
The maps also contained clearly marked warnings about restricted areas where recruits were forbidden to enter.
And just to hammer the point home, the High-Rank demon who oversaw the orientation unleashed a level of threatening pressure when warning them about the consequences of trespassing that was more than enough to scare even the most bull-headed among them into behaving.
After that, the crew didn’t bother interacting with the recruits any further throughout the remainder of the three-week journey.
Aside from their mandatory three-hour daily Gravitational Adaptation sessions, the recruits were left free to spend their time however they wished.
Of course, that relative freedom was only temporary.
Once they reached Area 1, their lives would become anything but free.
No one had explicitly said it, but they could all tell that the life waiting for them wasn’t going to be a free one.
’I mean, they already told us we could spend up to five years in that place. And I doubt we’ll be able to leave unless it’s for a mission.’
During the trip, Xaren didn’t just use his phone as a navigator.
Since it was connected to the ship’s network, he spent time familiarizing himself with it and learning how to search for information through the network.
Thanks to that, he managed to dig up quite a bit about the galaxy they lived in, which, for the record, was called Pavo.
From what he gathered, the demons had only recently gained a strong foothold in the Pavo Galaxy—though ’recent’ was relative when it came to races like demons, who had distorted perceptions of time due to their longevity.
In truth, it had been over five centuries since that had happened.
As Xaren expected, not long after the demons began their conquest, the numbers of angels multiplied exponentially, their purpose being to counter and stop the demon incursions.
Thus, the eternal war between the two races carried on, with both sides paying little attention to the original inhabitants of the galaxy.
Naturally, that didn’t sit well with the elves, dragons, and humans who had already been vying for supremacy in Pavo.
Soon enough, things spiralled into the five-way war that Xaren had found himself embroiled in during his past life.
Curious, he also searched for information about his home world, and to his surprise, it was listed as a battlefrontworld—a world where the outcome of the war had yet to be decided.
Apparently, the resistance alliance formed by the angels and humans on his planet was still holding strong.
’The humans allied with the angels? The same angels who brought the demons to our world?’
Thinking about it, it seemed neither side had much of a choice. Circumstances must have forced the alliance into being.
After skimming through some more details about his former world, Xaren shifted his attention to gathering information about Area One—the place they were heading to—and its mysterious owner, ’Lord Xynax.’
However, information on Area One was scarce, and information on Xynax himself was even scarcer.
There wasn’t even a single picture of the man available.
All Xaren managed to find was his name—and a long list of the famous students he had trained.
In addition, Xaren discovered that besides Area One, there were also Areas Two, Three, Four, and Five.
It was said that although Xynax oversaw all of them, he personally focused most of his attention on Area One and Two, while leaving the others largely in the hands of his former students.
So, while Areas Three to Five were still considered prestigious, there were plenty who would choose a dropout from Area One or Two over a graduate from Areas Three to Five.
’Looks like those from Areas One and Two look down on the others too. Classic classism.’
That was the thought that crossed Xaren’s mind as he switched off his phone screen and climbed down from his bunk.
He walked over to the door and opened it, just as Ilya, who stood outside had been about to knock.
"Oh..." she muttered.
"You knock at the exact same time every day. I’ve gotten used to it," Xaren said casually, closing the door behind him before starting down the hallway.
Ilya quickly fell into step beside him, her attention shifting back to the phone in her hand as she scrolled through bits of information, much like Xaren had been doing moments earlier.
