Chapter 82: Blood Mummies

The hairs stood on end as they realized that many pairs of blood-red eyes lit up in the room.

"WAH-" A distant scream echoed above them, and all the Blood Mummies made their moves.

Their speed was such that even Louis was surprised. These lunged at them, using their hands as claws, blood still dripping from strange, dried, and bandaged wounds all over their bodies.

Their appearance was human, but the teeth were snake-like, though completely dry.

Before they could react, two mummies fell on them both from two sarcophagi overhead.

Louis acted instinctively when he sensed the danger so close, swinging his weapon like a dagger.

This time, he did not hold back. His attack was so fast and powerful that it shattered the head of one of them, and at the same time, the body was pushed to hit the other one, who was falling.

Instantly, he moved his gun back and fired without even aiming, guided merely by his perception.

Luckily, it was the highest statistic he had; it was hard for anything to escape his perception.

Thanks to this, three mummies were shattered instantly, but unfortunately, there were too many of them.

He tried to dodge one of them, but this one was too close.

The name hovered above its head as it moved at high speed with a terrified expression on that horrible face.

’Shit.’ He mentally braced himself for impact.

BAM*

But a powerful bullet pierced the mummy’s head, killing it in an instant and lighting its body on fire.

Laura was already prepared, in a good position, about 4 meters away from him, under the stairs.

It was difficult for them to reach her there. She winked at him to continue his attack.

’It’s good to have such a good sniper.’ He thought and looked up.

It was his turn to play tank today. But he wasn’t against it.

He had upped his vitality just for a day like this.

He began to run to the front in a great frenzy of power, and the sounds of gunfire began to echo one after another.

Since they were mummies, the best way to kill them was to use fire. They would burn them completely with that and prevent them from being able to get up again.

The problem was supply.

’Laura still has about 50 shots of fire. But I only have 30 and a half of them were given to me by the Professor. I can’t spend too many in the first dungeon. I don’t want to fill my belly with potions to regain my energy.’ He thought.

That’s why he had to come up with a plan.

With one shot, he needed to kill as many of those as possible. Unfortunately, these mummies were cunning.

They didn’t gather in groups; they sought to attack them from flanks and avoided crowds. Because of that, it was harder to calculate to get a bullet through several heads.

He sighed as he realized this and stopped firing.

He even signaled Laura not to do so for now.

’I must kill them with my fists. Luckily, they are barely level 40.’ He jumped over them and fell to the ground in a place where several corpses were on fire.

He put away his pistol and tied several bandages on his hands before getting into a combat stance.

He wasn’t spectacularly good at it, but... it was better than wasting precious runes.

The mummies noticed his intention, so they suddenly became crazier than they already were and swooped down on him like ants, looking more terrifying, but still keeping some distance from each other.

Apparently, they knew the pros of Armamentalist: being able to kill several with the same bullet, whenever the opportunity allowed.

But Louis didn’t mind. If they kept their distances like this, he could move better.

With this, he would take advantage of having strength, but not technique. So he was pleased.

So he soon began his movements, clumsy but lethal.

A blow aimed at the head used all his strength and shattered it. He continued to advance with a second blow and then a third, before dodging with a few steps backwards and responding with a kick to the stomach.

Some mummies coming from above fell to the ground, wanting to crush him, but a bullet went through four of them at the same time, and Laura smiled.

"Even if you tell me not to attack, I won’t waste opportunities like that." She smiled and finished setting up her glasses for night vision.

From a distance, Louis smiled, but then he felt something fall on his arms and burn him.

’Fire?’ He thought and quickly jumped back.

At the sight of his arm, his body shuddered.

[Bloody Poison that has developed from the rotting of the place over the past 300 years.]

[This poison does True Damage and ignores defenses.]

[HP: 1,940/2,000]

[HP: 1,910/2,000]

..

His health points were repeatedly dropping because of the poison, so he did not hesitate to pour a healing potion on the wounds that were opening up.

The potion quickly acted against the poison and the wounds, restoring his health to full.

Still, this made him frown.

He quickly jumped over to where Laura was to explain the situation to her.

"Poison developed in that strange blood because of the rot in the place. It does True Damage, so it ignores defenses." He spoke.

She frowned.

"Those kinds of rotten poisons can’t get into your blood, so we’ll have to figure out a way to kill them all using distances or in groups."

"Yes."

She remembered something and smiled. "Try to gather them all in one place. Figure out some way to get most of them crowded together."

"What’s the point? If they’re not in ranks, it will be difficult."

"You just do it. I’m going to get ready for something." She spoke.

Louis nodded before looking at the mummies. He quickly returned to the fight to keep them from rushing in and disturbing Laura.

He fell on top of them and pounced on two of them, destroying their heads with his feet.

’I have enough potions for now. I’ll have to suffer a bit to get it done.’ He thought. If Laura’s plan didn’t work, he still had another plan that would work for him.

So he started jumping between them and smashing several of the ones that were farther away.

As he ran about the darkened room, he managed to dodge many hits and kill many mummies, but they just kept coming out.

[You have leveled up]

[You have leveled up]

...

His level continued to rise until he reached level 24.

It was then that he managed to make all the mummies a bit crowded, killing many of them and confusing them with his movements.

On the floor, there were over 80 empty vials of healing potions. Even Laura was in shock to see so many potions. She had never seen someone throw away so many potions like that.

Healing potions are not cheap, you know. Some cost up to 10,000 Jens. But he was throwing them away, just like that, to avoid pain.

She understood the motives, but...

’Sigh. Rich people.’ She thought.

But seeing that he had completed his work, she smiled.

As Louis drew his gun again to fire, she jumped on them and smiled even wider.

"Time for you to meet my beloved Shotgun." Her rifle was put away, and in its place, a rather large shotgun was held by her two hands at waist level.

Then she fired...

BROM*

A total of 14 consecutive shots hit many of the mummies from behind. None of them were expecting it. Who would expect a sniper to come in at point-blank range and fire more than a dozen shots at them all at once?

The bullets were powerful and contained fire magic.

The nice thing about shotguns was that a single Rune was good for a whole barrage of shots.

This scattered the magic damage a bit and increased the amount of mana required, but the point-blank shot was so powerful that there was simply no alternative: whoever was shot at that distance would die.

After an initial shotgun blast, she quickly reloaded in mid-air and fired again.

It was a scene she only had to make twice more.

Louis from the side had been perplexed, to the point that he could neither react nor fire.

"You..." He said, catching her attention. "You’re fierce." He smiled.

"Hahaha." She laughed.

But then, the same scream from before echoed again from the depths.

"WAH-"

"Is there still?" They both stood on guard, back-to-back.

But nothing happened.

All the mummies were dead.

"There’s more toward the bottom." She spoke.

"The problem is, which way?" he asked.

"..."

At one point, this place had only one wall, and the rest seemed hollow and stretched as far as the eye could no longer see because of the darkness.

They hadn’t gotten the key, so it should be with whatever was further back.

The problem was, which way?

"We should..." She prepared to speak, but then the scream echoed.

"WAAAAH-"

But this time it seemed to be more extensive.

Then they both felt something approaching.

"BEWARE!" shouted Louis as he sensed something strange approaching. He had to pull Laura to the side, and a peculiar shot of putrid blood shot across, hitting the wall behind them.

Louis wasted no time and fired a shot at the spot where the bloodshot came from.

The flaming bullet lit up everything in its path, but the depth of the place was so great that it reached a point where it weakened and hit something.

Although the force of the impact was minor and did no damage, that bullet fulfilled its objective, illuminating with its fire that depth and the attacker’s appearance.
