Chapter 302: Chapter 323, Sending You Out of the Game

Looking at the determination in Chen Feng’s eyes, the instructor sighed inwardly. Chen Feng had grown up under his watch, which was why their conversation lacked the usual formality.

The instructor said, "Let’s put this matter aside for now. Let that kid continue with the selection test. I will personally go and see what this guy is really capable of."

Suddenly, Chen Feng cracked a cunning smile and replied, "Great!"

After Chen Feng had left, the instructor lit a cigarette and sprawled in his chair.

"Zhao Guosheng, oh Zhao Guosheng, it’s rare in my life that I’ve ever admired someone, and you’re one of the few. I hope this turns out to be the right move," the instructor muttered to himself.

...

The young man’s name was Meng Zhengyi, not the offspring of officials, military families, or wealthy merchants. He had come to participate in the selection on his own merit, which couldn’t help but impress Fang Yi.

And, as Meng Zhengyi vividly recounted his story, Fang Yi finally understood why he had become a hot topic.

It turned out that the fact he had handed in a blank exam and scored zero had spread; now, almost everyone who came to participate in the selection test knew about it. There was such a worst-performing student among them.

"Not only that, some people have even given you a nickname," said Meng Zhengyi with a smile.

"What nickname?" Fang Yi asked.

"Egg Prince."

Damn it, Fang Yi couldn’t help but laugh and cry, but he wasn’t really angry—it’s not like he’d lost a piece of flesh. It’s just that he had wanted to keep a low profile and pass the Dragon Team’s selection test inconspicuously. However, it seemed that he had inadvertently become a "celebrity"—a twist of fate indeed.

Right then, a bell rang throughout the building, the signal to assemble. In an instant, everyone rushed downstairs, lining up in formation, with Fang Yi being no exception.

Approximately a hundred people gathered on the training field. In the center of everyone’s attention, a man in his forties stepped forward—it was Instructor Li Zhengnan.

Without the need for a megaphone or loudspeaker, Li Zhengnan projected his powerful voice and said, "The next test is the second round, an elimination race. Those who fail to meet the physical requirements will be eliminated immediately and need to pack up and get lost."

The young people’s expressions became solemn.

Then another instructor stepped forward and announced loudly, "Everyone is to run around the mountain trail, five laps. Whoever fails the physical requirements will be eliminated. Did everyone get that?"

"We got it!!!"

The response from a hundred or so people was loud and thunderous.

Led by an instructor, they started from the entrance of the training field. Like a long dragon, they jogged out of the field and onto the mountain trail for the running test.

Fang Yi ran along with the main group, dressed simply in a T-shirt, casual pants, and athletic shoes. Blending in with the crowd, he adhered to his principle of keeping a low profile, thus staying towards the back.

But he wasn’t too far behind. It was more middle of the pack, mediocre at best.

Fang Yi did not want to attract too much attention, so he ran at a relaxed pace, and since the running test didn’t have a set time limit, he just needed to complete five laps.

The so-called mountain trail was a road specially constructed around the mountain. As everyone ran out from the base, a jeep followed them, and inside stood a man in his forties—it was Li Zhengnan.

Li Zhengnan searched through the crowd and eventually fixed his gaze on Fang Yi.

"This kid... is playing it down," observed Li Zhengnan, his insight extremely sharp, as he immediately noticed Fang Yi’s intentional underperformance.

Li Zhengnan didn’t rush him but after a while, he actually began to smile.

Fang Yi’s pace was rhythmic and steady. He had no intention of competing with those ahead, simply maintaining his own tempo. But before long, the women who were lagging behind caught up.

Women who were strong enough to participate in the Dragon Team selection naturally surpassed ordinary men, but compared to the men here, there was still a gap. However, they had caught up to Fang Yi.

"Get out of the way, don’t block the road!" a girl with a ponytail said disdainfully.

Fang Yi ignored her as if he hadn’t heard, and continued running. The girl mustered her strength and overtook him, then cast a disgusted glance back at Fang Yi before chasing after the main group ahead.

The other girls also caught up, nearly surrounding Fang Yi.

"Hey, handsome, run faster!"

"Yeah, if you can’t even outpace us, what makes you think you can join the Dragon Team?"

Not all the girls looked down on Fang Yi, though. A girl with a bun hairstyle, her face pale and delicate but with a small freckle on her perky nose, ran up beside Fang Yi.

"Come on!" the girl clenched her fist and gestured to him.

Fang Yi took a liking to the bun-haired girl. Having been silent until now, he smiled and said, "Okay, let’s go!"

Elated by the response, the bun-haired girl smiled genuinely, her cheeks flushing as she ran with renewed vigor.

But it seemed the girl was trying to encourage Fang Yi rather than overtake him, as she stayed by his side as they ran together.

After one lap around the mountain path, which took about ten minutes, Fang Yi estimated that a single lap was roughly 2500 meters. Therefore, five laps would be around twelve and a half kilometers, a 12.5-kilometer distance.

However, this posed no difficulty for Fang Yi. Even if he had to carry weights, he could still finish the run; he was simply keeping a low profile right now.

By the end of the first lap, the bun-haired girl’s breathing became hurried, her cheeks reddened, and sweat gradually appeared on her smooth forehead.

On the second lap, the pace of those ahead began to drop; they seemingly understood running too fast was merely a waste of energy.

During the third lap, the bun-haired girl started to struggle to keep up, and her pace slowed even more. That’s when people began to get eliminated, shown the yellow card, most of them from wealthy families.

Seeing the girl struggling more and more, Fang Yi said in a deep voice, "Follow my rhythm."

Upon hearing Fang Yi’s steady voice, the girl paused but didn’t ask questions. After observing how Fang Yi ran, she started to imitate him and immediately felt much lighter. She couldn’t help but look at Fang Yi with gratitude.

Seeing the girl ease up a little, Fang Yi let out a sigh of relief but the next moment, his brows furrowed.

Several young men ahead purposefully slowed down, falling back and closing in on Fang Yi and the girl.

One of the young men, panting, still scoffed, "Kid, bet you didn’t expect to see us again."

"Kid, we let you off in the cafeteria, but this time we won’t."

Their plan was simple: to make Fang Yi stop here and get him eliminated.

No sooner had the words been uttered than one of the youths charged from the side, attempting to knock Fang Yi over.

In this running test, stopping meant elimination, so this youth intended to knock Fang Yi to the ground and out of the trial.

However, as the youth charged toward him, Fang Yi suddenly decelerated, slamming on the brakes with his feet. The youth missed and crashed into a tree, exclaiming in pain.

The bun-haired girl looked back worriedly, to which Fang Yi said, "You keep running; I’ll catch up with you."

The bun-haired girl hesitated but, seeing Fang Yi’s reassuring smile and understanding she couldn’t help much by staying, she continued running with the technique he had taught her.

Once the bun-haired girl was on her way, Fang Yi’s legs kept moving in place; he didn’t stop. He gave a cold glance at the few youths and said coldly, "Since you guys want to be eliminated, fine, I’ll see you out!"
