Chapter 301: Chapter 322: You’ve Become Famous

Fang Yi finished his meal, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and sat there lighting a cigarette.

"A cigarette after a meal is divine," they say.

By the way, Fang Yi checked his wristwatch; there was still half an hour before one o’clock.

At one o’clock in the afternoon, the physical test would begin. Each dormitory had a posted chart outlining the testing procedures and corresponding times. Fang Yi had already memorized it before leaving the cafeteria.

Fang Yi instinctively reached for his pocket but suddenly remembered that his smartphone had been confiscated.

The assessment test for the Dragon Team wasn’t overly stringent; it merely entailed surrendering external communication devices and undergoing a thorough body search, since this was a Dragon Team base and exposure could cause substantial trouble.

Apart from communication devices being confiscated, everyone was allowed to keep other belongings, such as cigarettes and wristwatches, as long as these items didn’t concern Dragon Team matters. Therefore, the selection board had no objections.

From this, it seemed that the discipline within Dragon Team was quite lax.

However, this was probably just on the surface. Fang Yi didn’t believe that the Dragon Team, the mysterious organization led by Xuan Cang, would make such a mistake concerning discipline.

As Fang Yi was enjoying his cigarette, a few young men gradually moved closer to him, all with unfriendly expressions.

Fang Yi, of course, noticed them. He remained calm, cigarette dangling from his mouth, picked up his lunchbox, and prepared to leave.

But just as Fang Yi was about to leave his seat, two men moved together to block his path.

"What’s the meaning of this?" asked Fang Yi, his eyebrows raised, his voice grave.

The young men in front of Fang Yi sneered. One mockingly said, "No particular reason, just that we find you disagreeable and want to give you some trouble."

Another young man also revealed disdain in his eyes and jeered, "Want to get through? Simple, just flatter us with a few kind words."

The words of these two young men were laced with provocation and difficulties, making their intention to needle Fang Yi abundantly clear.

Rules here stipulated no fighting, else one would be directly eliminated.

Therefore, Fang Yi wasn’t going to strike. He wouldn’t react to these punks’ baiting by throwing a punch and falling into their trap.

Fang Yi simply stepped back, sat down in his original spot, crossed his legs, and said, "Gentlemen, we are strangers; there’s no need for such aggression, is there?"

"Ha! We’re pressuring you on purpose. What can you do about it? Go on, fight us if you dare!" one of the youths arrogantly provoked, his face utterly punchable.

They all knew the rules here, provoking Fang Yi to strike first deliberately.

They had their plan all worked out; if Fang Yi dared to make a move, they would all jump him. Later, if there were an investigation, they could easily shift the blame onto Fang Yi, claiming he attacked first.

However, Fang Yi had already seen through their scheme, so there was no way he would engage. Instead, he continued sitting there with his legs crossed, motionless, confronting them.

If they could come up with such a plan, why couldn’t Fang Yi?

Then let’s see who has more patience. Let’s have an endurance contest.

So Fang Yi lit another cigarette, ignoring the youths’ disdainful and arrogant gazes. With the cigarette between his lips, he lifted his wrist and started to watch his watch intently, immersing himself in its ticking.

The young men, however, became somewhat restless. Regarding their status, though not the highest, it was undoubtedly substantial, mostly the sons of the wealthy—so-called ’rich second generation.’ Their fathers had sent them to the Dragon Team in hopes of having connections in government to aid their business dealings.

When it came to endurance, these rich kids fell short. After just a few minutes in this tense standoff, the youths could not stand it any longer.

"Humph! The kind who turns in a blank exam! There’s plenty of time; we’ll play with you slowly!" spat out one of the youths harshly.

"Kid, just you wait!"

"You’ll trip up sooner or later, and end up in our hands."

Several young men spat out such harsh words before turning on their heels and walking away. They didn’t dare to start a fight; after all, the rules here were not to be taken lightly.

Watching the group of youngsters leave, Fang Yi didn’t get angry. He calmly picked up his food container and headed towards the dishwashing area. Some people had seen Fang Yi being ganged up on by the youngsters, so they cast curious glances his way.

Having washed his food container, Fang Yi returned to the dormitory. As soon as he got back, a young man lying on the top bunk jumped down and laughed, "Brother, you’re Fang Yi, right?"

Fang Yi was slightly taken aback, then nodded in response.

The young man laughed heartily, "Brother, you’re famous now!"

"Famous?" Fang Yi looked utterly baffled.

"Yeah, you’re famous. You got a big zero on your exam, and the instructors at the top found out," the young man explained.

...

Instructor’s office.

A man in his forties suddenly slammed a test paper onto the desk, with faint streaks of white in his temples. He was very authoritative, with a sharp look in his eyes, and sternly regarded the several instructors standing before him, demanding, "Who brought in this number thirty-eight?"

Chen Feng’s facial muscles twitched, and, like a schoolboy, he slowly raised his hand. The head instructor glared at him fiercely.

"Handing in a blank paper and scoring zero, the recruit you brought has set an unprecedented and probably unrivaled record in the history of the Dragon Team’s selection tests," said the head instructor.

Chen Feng appeared indifferent, like a hog doesn’t mind boiling water, thinking to himself miserably, This kid has really screwed me over!

At that moment, one of the instructors spoke up, "Sir, perhaps there’s a personal reason behind this, or maybe Chen Feng has some difficulties he can’t speak of."

This comment seemed to be defending Chen Feng, but anyone could hear the underlying implication that he was accused of cheating, of placing personal interests over public duties.

Initially unfazed, Chen Feng shot the instructor a look and said gravely, "Wei Rui, are you suggesting I’m corrupt and biased?"

Wei Rui smiled and said, "I’m merely suggesting it’s a possibility."

Chen Feng replied coldly, "That’s certainly what it sounds like."

Wei Rui wanted to continue, but the head instructor suddenly slapped the table again and barked, "Enough, all of you!"

The head instructor was truly angry, and Chen Feng and Wei Rui immediately fell silent.

Fuming, the head instructor commanded, "Wei Rui, all of you leave now. Chen Feng, you stay."

With a taunting and gloating look in his eyes, Wei Rui glanced at Chen Feng and then left along with the other instructors.

Once Wei Rui and the others had gone, the enraged head instructor hesitated to speak, then finally collapsed back into his chair, saying, "Chen Feng, oh, Chen Feng, what kind of recruit have you brought in this time? I remember you’ve never let me down before."

Chen Feng hurriedly made a cup of tea for the head instructor and then smiled, "Actually, this number thirty-eight was a latecomer."

The head instructor was taken aback, "A latecomer?"

"It was Deputy Director Zhao who arranged for him to join," Chen Feng said.

The head instructor immediately showed a look of realization, then sighed, "So it was Zhao Guosheng who arranged it. But he’s an upright and honest man. It’s out of character for him to do something like this."

Chen Feng’s expression was resolute as he said, "I trust Deputy Director Zhao."
