Chapter 262: Chapter 262 The Keli Family’s Countermeasure
"Thank you for the rescue," Kerry said, watching Kara leave before turning to the skeletal flying dragon in the sky.
This skeletal flying dragon was only an elite unit, but because of its high level, it had high intelligence from the beginning, almost equal to humans. Its thinking was perhaps a bit rigid.
"The master sent me to assist you, no need to thank me. Now, come with us."
The skeletal flying dragon turned around without saying much, and Rory could only follow. "Follow them, let’s go."
The boatman quickly nodded, finally getting away. When they were previously caught, everyone thought they were going to die. The people who escaped with Rory were all absolutely loyal.
Unfortunately, the boat was too small, and some had to stay behind, so in the end, only about twenty managed to escape.
Luckily, most of the loyal followers were on other islands, not with the family.
Meanwhile, Kara, having failed the mission, returned to the family and reported the matter quickly. Kara then ignored everything else, confident in his position, which wouldn’t be lower than anyone else’s.
As a member of the Keli family, though from a side branch, cultivating to Gold level on his own ensured no one dared to look down on him. Even among the family elders, his status was very high.
Officially, he was just a tributor without authority, but no one dared to command him directly.
Only those of the main family who had cultivated to Gold level held slightly higher status than him.
At their level, status was based more on strength than background. The family had some Gold-level combat power, but those were troops acquired through various means.
Being troops, they were tools in the family with no real status.
"Alright, that’s the situation. Rory has officially declared her separation from the family. What to do next is up to you." Such a good junior being forced into this, Kara was speechless.
But there was no choice. The family had always been male-dominated, with females married off for alliances.
As a woman, Rory’s exceptional performance only heightened others’ vigilance against her.
Ironically, the three candidates for family inheritance this generation were all average. Hence, if a highly capable woman like Rory existed in the family, even other family members would be concerned.
The Eldest Young Master knocked on the table, "The problem now is that Rory is under the protection of Quisha Island, which is a hassle."
The family was very strong, capable of hiring many powerful individuals given time, though it came at a great cost. They weren’t afraid of Quisha Island, even believing their power to be possibly superior.
But the cost was too high, and its worth was debatable.
"Direct confrontation with Quisha Island isn’t appropriate now, but hunting Rory should be fine. As the top commercial family, cooperating with us is the best choice. I’m sure the undead of Quisha Island understand this."
The Second Young Master spoke, subtly showcasing his superior status.
The Third Young Master then said, "Dealing with Rory is not the right choice, because she has nothing to do with us anymore. Attacking her would openly oppose Quisha Island."
The Second Young Master quickly shook his head, "I never said we should do it ourselves. We can hire others, just be cautious not to get caught."
Hearing this, the Eldest Young Master retorted, "Not get caught? Impossible. If Rory has any problems, they would suspect us. Evidence doesn’t matter."
At their level, some things didn’t require evidence.
The Clan Leader tapped the table. These scenes were a headache. Every gathering led to these three sons attacking each other. If not interrupted, their staff would start attacking each other too.
The three had formed powerful factions with strong networks within the family.
Reaching this point, any abrupt action against one would cause significant turmoil. When did things become this way? The Clan Leader felt a headache coming.
"Alright, directly dealing with Rory is unsuitable. The master of Quisha Island is undead and sometimes unreasonable."
Just like when they dealt with Mianhai Port, entering directly and finding evidence afterward. With conclusive evidence, who could do anything? And how many of these forces were genuinely clean?
Even if their proclaimed evidence couldn’t be found, exposing some things could be fatal.
They weren’t afraid of Quisha Island’s power in an open confrontation. But if the opponent struck silently, they’d be doomed, possibly seeing their family destroyed.
They couldn’t always hire protectors; it would drain their wealth.
They were a commercial family, not a military one. Unlike the younger ones, the higher-ups knew their Gold combat power was varied and loyalty insufficient.
In large-scale battles, problems were inevitable.
"Here’s my thought, we’ll use our network to fully suppress the Material Trading House. If Rory performs poorly, Quisha Island will abandon her."
"Excellent suggestion. If we don’t engage directly, even the undead of Quisha Island can’t argue." The Eldest Young Master immediately responded.
"Father is truly wise. We need to learn from you." The Third Young Master echoed.
The Second Young Master gritted his teeth, seeing how quickly they moved.
After thinking, he said, "Let me handle this. In practice, I’ll better understand your principles, Father."
Though the Clan Leader knew they were flattering, it felt good.
"Very well, you will handle this matter."
The Eldest and Third Young Masters’ eyes darkened, unexpected at his ploy. This was significant, as the growth of the Material Trading House would affect them. If the second did well, he’d gain great merit and prestige.
Regrettably, they couldn’t change their father’s decision, so they sought trouble elsewhere, brainstorming schemes simultaneously.
