Chapter 221: Chapter 221: A Group of Foxes Has Arrived
"The terrain at Beast King Valley is quite special, and it’s almost impossible to attack it from the outside," he said. "Numerical superiority can’t be utilized here. Even from the sky, there’s not enough open terrain to engage properly."
"Compared to that, our large aerial units lack the agility of the Beastmen’s flying troops. Moreover, the Beastmen probably have some anti-air weapons, so we’re not at an advantage."
Cosette fell silent for a moment. "So you’re saying if we do launch a direct assault, even if we can take it, we’ll suffer heavy losses."
His subordinate nodded lightly, which made Cosette sullen. Under normal circumstances, following their style, they would take it regardless of the losses, which wouldn’t be a problem at all.
But it’s different now, with the South still in conflict, employing their forces.
This consumption is vast. Though the Territory still has some forces, they can’t be carelessly deployed.
As for the continued "Manufacture" of troops, that’s not suitable either. On one end, Fang Jie is planning to reduce the number of Apprentice Level troops and instead adopt Black Iron Species as his base level of strength.
However, there is still a shortage of corpses, which requires a long period of accumulation.
Another point is that creating a large number of low-level troops would consume too many spirit points.
While Apprentice Level troops didn’t cost many spirit points, Fang Jie was actually short on spirit points right now. The Spirit Gathering Tower System had just started to be constructed and was not yet complete; it needed time.
As for the conflict on the high seas, the offensive against the Sea Alliance continued, with no knowing when they might also need some forces.
If the fighting here keeps up, with consumption on three fronts, the Territory may not be able to hold up.
After discussing with Fang Jie, Cosette decided to temporarily ease off on their offensive here.
"It looks like I need to study some strategy from Li Mingshu," Cosette mulled over, then decided to step out. As an Undead Hero, Cosette’s approach to things was very direct, much like a military man.
Li Mingshu and his team had the function of training talents for the Territory; thus, they couldn’t possibly refuse.
After learning about the situation here, Fang Jie could only sigh, acknowledging their lack of agility in combat.
But he had no regrets, as Li Mingshu wouldn’t be able to command such a massive military force. Their understanding of cold weapons was still unfamiliar, not as proficient as Cosette.
It was just that when it came to strategic insight, Cosette was not as good as himself.
"Fang Jie, are you there?" A crisp voice sounded from the outside.
Fang Jie stepped out to see Qin Lan, who had just alighted from a Mechanical Flying Eagle. "What brings you here? Is there something important?" Fang Jie remembered that Qin Lan was particularly busy recently.
Indeed, she was negotiating settlements with two nations, aiding Jia Siwei in his play-acting, and there was the overseas commerce.
Since they hadn’t divided responsibilities yet, all these matters were still under Qin Lan’s control. Qin Lan had been so busy that she barely touched the ground, yet now she had found the time to come here.
"It’s just that I heard a group of prisoners was being transferred here, and I’ve come to receive them."
Fang Jie was surprised at the promptness of her information. Although he had not tried to conceal it, the fact that she got the news so swiftly showed her intelligence network covered every corner of the Territory.
"There is a group of Minotaurs, but you could have just waited in your own Territory—nothing crucial," Fang Jie replied.
The Minotaurs could assist in land development, but there weren’t many of them, so there was no need for Qin Lan to make a trip. Unlike others, they weren’t short on farmers who could cultivate the land.
"I heard there are some White Foxes too; they’re quite the fox spirits. I just wanted to come see for myself."
When Qin Lan mentioned fox spirits, she emphasized the words a bit strangely, giving Fang Jie an odd look. Although it seemed like mere curiosity, Fang Jie couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
Could she be jealous? But that wasn’t right, Fang Jie dismissed the thought.
He’d been in this world for a while now but hadn’t shifted his mindset.
In Fang Jie’s eyes, he was still just an ordinary person, who, despite possessing great strength, always felt like he was playing a game; it didn’t quite feel real.
Qin Lan, however, stood out in all aspects—be it ability or appearance, she was truly exceptional. And with her strong presence, Fang Jie often felt overshadowed.
Despite being the boss, Fang Jie didn’t believe Qin Lan would take any interest in him.
Shaking his head, Fang Jie said, "There will be some prisoners from the White Fox Clan arriving, attractive and quite talented. They’re suitable to become attendants; it’s not like we can have no vitality around here."
Opening his hands, Fang Jie admitted that although he could adapt to a surrounding of Undead, the idea still displeased him psychologically. He did not want to turn away such attractive attendants.
"That makes sense. But I wanted to remind you to be careful, not to overindulge. Development is what’s most important now. If we can’t stand against others, it’s a dead end."
"Also, those are Beastmen who’ve been defeated, so be wary of their vengeance."
Fang Jie had the strength of a Bronze-level Mage, but he was still a Mage. If someone ambushed him at close range, the outcome would be uncertain. Fang Jie knew about his high attributes, but he couldn’t make use of them in close combat.
Fang Jie nodded lightly, "You are right, but don’t worry, loyalty is there after all."
Loyalty might not be infallible, but at least so far, Fang Jie had found no method to entirely bypass it.
Qin Lan sighed, feeling that this man could be quite obstinate. "Then I’d also like some White Foxes, is that possible?"
"It’s not impossible; there are many coming this time, several hundreds in a clan. I only need to arrange for twenty or thirty at most on my end," Fang Jie stated frankly.
"Let’s not. After all, they are your attendants, and I won’t compete for them."
Hearing Fang Jie’s words, Qin Lan felt a softness in her heart. As they were talking, a Skeleton quickly approached.
"Lord, the prisoners from the North are almost here."
Fang Jie nodded, "Then bring them." They were nearing the Affiliated Territory of the Northern Plateau, and once they arrived, they could be transported through the large Space Gate.
So all Fang Jie needed to do was wait for them to come through the Space Gate.
"I won’t go; there’s a lot to do," Qin Lan decided against going to see them and chose to ride the Mechanical Flying Eagle back. Fang Jie was left speechless by her round trip for such a trivial matter, unsure of Qin Lan’s thoughts.
