Chapter 108: Emma’s gift
The little girl was wearing a mask and a hat, only her big eyes being visible. She was glaring pitifully at Steven.
Even though he couldn’t see what she looked like, he still thought the little girl was adorable.
So adorable that he hadn’t caught what she softly mumbled.
"What did you say?"
Emma pointed at Amy, who had hurried over, and spoke loudly.
"I said your servant insisted on asking us for an invitation!"
As soon as she said this, Amy immediately stopped in her tracks.
‘Servant?’
‘She actually called me a servant?’
She looked at Emma with an unpleasant expression and explained, "Sorry, Steven. Miss Morrison doesn’t have an invitation, so I didn’t let her in. After all, too many random people have been coming in previous years."
"Moreover, I didn’t expect you to invite... people from the Morrison family."
Her words implied that she was just following protocol, and the Morrison family wasn’t even on her radar.
Cecilia smiled, admiring her persuasiveness; something she herself lacked.
Hearing Emma claim they were stopped by Amy outside, Steven felt displeased but said nothing.
Noticing his displeasure, Amy offered, "Steven, if I’ve made Miss Morrison uncomfortable, I’ll just leave first."
What a perfect green tea act.
She thought he would save face for her and let it slide, but surprisingly, no one present spoke up for her.
Feeling a bit awkward, she could only smile wryly and continued, "Then I’ll go back first. After all, Grandma still needs someone to look after her. Happy Birthday, Steven."
He nodded and ignored her, leading Cecilia and Emma into the house.
Amy stood there, feeling like an outsider for the first time. Despite that, she kept her composure and drove away.
Following him into the house, Cecilia and Emma entered the living room where he instructed the butler, "In the future, Miss Morrison and her daughter can come into this villa directly."
After the butler agreed, Emma finally brightened up.
Noticing that she was wearing a mask and hat on such a hot day, Steven couldn’t help but ask with concern.
"You can take off your mask and hat; it’s really hot."
She blinked and looked at her mommy.
"She has... caught a cold. The doctor said she needs to bundle up more."
Hearing that Emma was sick, Ethan quickly came over out of concern.
"Emma, how did you get sick? I’ll make you some ginger tea."
Steven looked at him in disbelief. Why was he so concerned about someone else’s child, almost as if she were his own niece?
Alex, however, remained calm. He knew this was likely a ploy Cecilia and Emma had planned, quietly lowering the air conditioner’s temperature to make sure Emma wouldn’t get too hot.
As they sat down on the sofa, Steven noticed that Cecilia had come empty-handed and felt a bit awkward.
‘Did she seriously not prepare a gift? Impossible. Maybe she’s hiding it?’
Steven coughed twice at Ethan, hinting at him.
Ethan, as if missing the hint, hurriedly offered another cup of ginger tea.
"Big Brother, did you catch a cold as well? Try my exclusive super ginger tea recipe, guaranteed to make you better immediately!"
Steven shot him a glare and snapped, "All you ever do is drink! Just drink, drink, drink!"
Feeling helpless, he turned to Alex and spoke up again.
"Alex, I heard you prepared a gift for me; let’s see it."
He intentionally emphasized the word "gift."
On the other hand, Alex was speechless.
What gift?
He had never given Steven any gifts; he just bought whatever was needed.
"I didn’t prepare anything."
The atmosphere turned awkward, and Cecilia stifled a laugh while looking at her son.
Perhaps only Alex could keep Steven in check.
Emma blinked and then sweetly said to Steven, "I have a present~"
Steven’s eyes lit up with excitement, looking at her expectantly.
She jumped off the sofa, taking one of Cecilia’s hands and one of his hands.
When he felt Emma’s small hand grab his, his heart suddenly felt as soft as cotton.
She placed their hands together and said, "I’ll give Mommy to you. I wish you both..."
Tilting her head, she tried to remember the idiom she had just learned.
"White-haired shoes grow old, early bird brings a longan fruit!"
Everyone present froze for a moment.
Ethan smiled broadly, looking at Steven while Alex nodded as well.
Emma really knew how to get things done.
Steven’s warm hand covered Cecilia’s soft one, his heart suddenly racing.
Cecilia gave him a defeated smile, discreetly pulling her hand back before picking Emma up.
"Don’t say nonsense!"
Just then, the butler approached.
"Mr. Lawrence, shall we begin the party?"
Still immersed in the prior moment, Steven nodded woodenly.
For some reason, he felt a bit empty when Cecilia withdrew her hand.
Clenching the fist that still held her warmth, he stood up.
"Let’s begin."
The party went smoothly. Seeing Alex again made Cecilia so happy that she drank a bit more than usual.
After eating and drinking to her heart’s content, Edwin took Cecilia and Emma back to the hotel.
Before going to bed, Steven opened his phone. Still riding on the good vibes from the party today, he added Cecilia on Whatsapp.
Pondering for a while, he spent a long time typing before finally sending a message to her.
[Did you enjoy today’s party?]
After a moment, there was no response from her end.
Thinking it over, he realized how strange his question was as nobody would say they didn’t have a good time; even if they didn’t, they would just lie and say otherwise.
No wonder Alex always said he was smart but lacked emotional intelligence.
Thinking this, he typed out another message.
[Emma’s gift today was my favorite.]
When would it come true?
With this thought, he refrained from sending it in fear he would seem too eager.
A little tug-of-war was necessary.
It was better to just leave it be—after all, she had a crush on him. He was just giving her an opportunity.
He gradually felt sleepy, clutching his phone and drifting off without realizing it. About ten minutes later, he abruptly woke up and quickly checked his phone.
Cecilia had already read his message, but she didn’t reply!
