Chapter 235: Beyond the Sand and Dust
Chapter 235: Beyond the Sand and Dust
"Looks like it’s not animals this time, but encamped humans, how rare."
The surrounding Sand Lizardfolk, after clarifying the situation, showed expressions of surprise and excitement.
"Hope he’s brought some good stuff, hehe."
Although there are Lizardmen in the Kingdom who are friendly with humans, the tribe of Sand Lizardfolk living on this Highland Desolate Mountain is nothing close to kindly.
Unlike those Lizardmen who can only coexist with low-level Magic Creatures, these ones have established a trusting relationship with the Monster Lord of the Desolate Mountain, becoming like its Followers.
Although the Earth Devouring Snail can spend a lifetime buried in the earth without surfacing, it is not an Elemental Life, thus it cannot survive solely on soil and rocks.
And this Armored House, although it is an Otherworld within its body, it cannot freely manipulate the environment inside, naturally it cannot easily deal with prey swallowed into its body,
It’s too troublesome to kill the prey outside, and waiting for the prey to die of entrapment or starvation inside meant there’d be nothing tasty left.
So, it happily leaves the task to the Lizardmen; they fit together perfectly,
Once prey is sucked into the Otherworld, the Sand Lizardfolk will handle it on its behalf.
If what’s swallowed are animals or Magic Creatures, the Lizardfolk swarm and hack them to death, most of the flesh is discarded on the ground for the Earth Devouring Snail to slowly absorb.
If what’s swallowed is a human, the belongings they carry hold no interest for the Earth Devouring Snail, thus all goods go cheap to the Lizardfolk.
The Earth Devouring Snail responsible for pulling, the Sand Lizardfolk responsible for killing, this symbiotic relationship thus established, indeed makes for a joyful collaboration.
On normal days, the Sand Lizardfolk survive on whatever the Earth Devouring Snail ingests, sometimes they go out to hunt, and the spoils they gain are partly offered to the Earth Devouring Snail.
Though the plundered goods hold no meaning on this highland, the Lizardfolk occasionally traverse ridges and endure long trips down the highland, engaging in some not exactly legal trades with humankind, hence, if the prey wisely hands over their money, they won’t be ruthlessly killed.
While it’s easy to kill and silence someone, the Lizardfolk are aware if they are only after money, even if the adventurers who come here are robbed, the victims won’t likely have the Adventurer Guild coming far to avenge them.
After all, robbery is barely considered a crime among humans, and for the adventurers, losing money but sparing their lives is already a fortunate misfortune.
Even if they’re resentful and seek revenge, they can only rely on private strength or post a commission to retrieve their belongings.
However, an adventurer stripped of everything wouldn’t have extra money to post such a troublesome commission; thus, most can only swallow their losses with tears.
But if it’s murder, hey, that’s a completely different nature, no longer is it some tolerable Demon Species on this Desolate Mountain, but absolute Magic Creatures, once discovered, what awaits is an extermination notice.
Although relying on the protection of the Earth Devouring Snail, the Lizardfolk doesn’t think this territory holds any lethal threats,
But if they overdo it, not just adventurers, but even military forces might come to annihilate them, who knows if one day a Legendary force might come knocking.
As Demon acting in sustainable robbery can live untroubled; being treated as Magic Creatures, they would have to skulk in hiding from the hunt. Which life is more comfortable, the Sand Lizardfolk know well.
However, if the other party resists fiercely... that’s another matter.
The compassion of these cold-blooded lizards is thin as sand dust, blown away and dissipated by the wind at the slightest breath.
The Lizardfolk tightened their grip on their Rusty Swords, slowly contracting their encirclement.
Those that come to this Highland Desolate Mountain are mostly not simple characters, hence these cold-blooded Demons also dare not take it lightly, maintaining high alert.
But as the circle tightened to its smallest, they found no trace of humans, only seeing two small figures, one red and one black, near a dirt mound.
The Hero also looked up vigilantly at them, while a Lizardfolk, observing the tiny furball not bigger than a palm underfoot, puzzledly scratched his head’s Scales.
"How come there’s only a bird and a snake? Where’s the human?"
"Could it be still buried in the soil and not emerged yet?"
Another approaching Lizardfolk, looking at the scattered luggage on the ground, also weirdly flicked his tongue.
"Are these the human’s pets? Bringing such small things here, quite leisurely indeed."
"Forget about them, such a small bird won’t even fill a tooth gap, but that snake might make for a small snack."
Another Lizardfolk was indifferent.
"Maybe before being swallowed, they left their pets and luggage and ran away, quite clever. But it’s better that the person isn’t here, saves us some trouble."
The Sand Lizardfolk Leader snorted coldly, his eyes filled with disdain.
Seeing the leader had made a conclusion, the Lizardfolk lowered their guard and moved forward to search through the mounds of earth.
"Boss, we’ve struck it rich!"
Casually tossing aside a human notebook he couldn’t understand, one Lizardfolk excitedly looked up.
What he found was way more remarkable than that thick paper book!
He carefully pinched a piece of clothing with his four coarse fingers, unfolding it, the Chainmail woven from silver threads softly reflecting the light, making the Lizardfolk instantly restless.
"Mithril!"
A low chorus of astonished voices rose and fell, seeing their companion’s find, the Lizardfolk searched even more vigorously, and before long, another Lizardfolk cried out joyously.
