Chapter 658: Chapter 658: Swapping Luck
Chu Wugao nodded reluctantly. "Alright," he said. "I’ll call her and ask her to come over."
He pulled out his phone and dialed her number. As they waited, the room grew tense, and the only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioner.
After a few rings, Wugao’s girlfriend picked up.
"Hey," Wugao said, trying to sound casual. "Can you come over? I need to talk to you about that talisman you gave me."
There was a pause, and then her voice came through, slightly hesitant. "Is something wrong?"
"Just come over," Wugao insisted. "It’s important."
After a few more moments, she agreed and hung up. Wugao set the phone down, his hands trembling slightly.
"She’ll be here soon," he said.
Yu Holea nodded. "Good. Let’s hope she has some answers."
Chu Wugao’s mind was spinning. If the bad luck wasn’t his, who had it before? And why was it tied to him now?
When the doorbell finally rang, everyone jumped slightly. Wugao stood and opened the door, revealing a young woman.
The moment Nan Kelin saw the woman, his eyes widened in surprise, while Yu Holea almost whistled.
The young woman was none other than Nan Kelin’s assistant.
Now that would explain why she was so agitated that day.
Nan Kelin froze before stiffly turning toward Yu Holea.
The assistant on seeing Yu Holea and Nan Kelin was shocked. Her body turned cold and she only had one thought: Run!
Hence without hesitation, she turned and started to run.
Chu Wugao and Nan Kelin were surprised.
What the heck? Why was she running? Oh...no! Wait! She was running! It means she is guilty!
Both of them thought simultaneously.
Yu Holea was much faster than them. She instantly used her mystic energy to stop the assistant and within two seconds the assistant returned back to the door.
From her expression, it was clear that she didn’t want to return but was dragged by an invisible force.
Nan Kelin’s voice was filled with disbelief as he stared at his assistant.
"Why?" he asked, his tone heavy with hurt. "Why would you do this? I trusted you."
Assistant Su’s eyes darted around nervously.
She forced a shaky smile and shook her head.
"I... I don’t know what you’re talking about," she stammered, her hands trembling. "I haven’t done anything wrong!"
Chu Wugao crossed his arms, his face dark with suspicion.
"You sure about that?" he said, his voice low and dangerous.
Then suddenly he remembered something and glared at Assistant Su,
"Oh right! Now that I think, my luck has always been so good, but...it went downhill. It was after, I accepted that weird doll and you had asked about my birthdate my luck was changed, right?"
"What...what are you talking about? Maybe it was a coincidence..." Assistant Su chuckled nervously.
He took a step closer, his gaze sharp.
"You’re telling me that’s just a coincidence? My so-called ’luck’ disappeared right after, and then I got into that car accident. That wasn’t normal, and you know it."
Assistant Su’s face paled, but she kept up her act, shaking her head more vigorously.
"No, no! You’ve got it all wrong! I didn’t do anything like that!" she insisted, her voice rising in pitch.
Yu Holea, who had been quietly observing, suddenly smirked.
"Enough lies," she said calmly. She pulled a small talisman from her pocket, its paper glowing faintly with golden light. Without a word, she flicked it toward Assistant Su.
The talisman zipped through the air like it had a mind of its own and smacked right onto Assistant Su’s forehead, sticking there firmly.
Everyone froze.
"What the—?!" Assistant Su yelped, trying to peel it off, but the talisman wouldn’t budge. It glowed brighter, pulsing with an odd energy.
Nan Kelin’s eyes widened. "What’s happening?"
Yu Holea crossed her arms and leaned casually against the wall.
"Truth-seeking talisman," she explained.
"It forces people to tell the truth. No more games." She turned her sharp gaze on Assistant Su.
"Now, answer me. Did you swap Chu Wugao’s luck? And later, did you swap his bad luck with Nan Kelin’s?"
Assistant Su’s hands flew to her mouth, but it was too late.
The talisman glowed even brighter, and words tumbled out of her mouth as if pulled by an unseen force.
"Yes! I did it!" she blurted, her voice filled with panic.
"I swapped their luck! I didn’t mean for it to get this bad!"
Nan Kelin’s face twisted in pain.
"Why would you do this?" he demanded, his voice cracking. "What did I ever do to you?"
Assistant Su tried to hide her face, tears streaming down her cheeks. "It wasn’t supposed to be like this!" she sobbed.
Yu Holea’s eyes narrowed as she leaned closer to Assistant Su, her voice cold and sharp.
"Why did you swap their luck? What drove you to mess with their lives like this?"
Assistant Su wiped her tear-streaked face, her hands trembling.
"It was my brother," she whispered, her voice heavy with guilt.
"He... he used to be a famous pianist. His music touched so many hearts, and he was at the peak of his career. But then... then the accident happened."
"An accident?" Chu Wugao asked, his brow furrowing.
Assistant Su nodded, her shoulders slumping as if the weight of the memory was too much to bear.
"He lost his left hand," she said, her voice cracking.
"Everything crumbled after that. He fell into depression and shut himself away from the world. He even... he even talked about ending his own life." Her voice broke, and she covered her face, sobbing softly.
Nan Kelin’s jaw tightened, but he stayed silent, his fists clenched at his sides.
"I couldn’t watch him suffer anymore," Assistant Su continued, her voice muffled behind her hands.
"I tried everything to help him, but nothing worked. Then one day, I came across this strange website. It sold these... luck-swapping talismans."
"Luck-swapping talismans?" Yu Holea repeated, her tone skeptical but curious.
Assistant Su nodded slowly.
"At first, I didn’t take it seriously. It sounded like a scam. But then, I heard one of the actresses at my gym talking about it.
She said she’d used a talisman from that site, and it completely turned her life around. She got movie deals, awards... everything she ever wanted."
"And that convinced you?" Nan Kelin asked, his voice cold and distant.
"I was desperate!" Assistant Su snapped, her voice rising defensively.
"I didn’t know what else to do. So... I bought two talismans. They asked for my brother’s birthdate and the birthdate of the person whose luck I wanted to take. I... I chose my boyfriend."
Chu Wugao’s eyes widened in shock. "You used your boyfriend as an experiment?!"
Assistant Su flinched but nodded, guilt written all over her face.
"I didn’t think it would be that bad," she said quietly.
"I just wanted to see if it worked. And it did. Three days after the swap, my brother won the lottery.
He was so happy, and it pulled him out of his depression. With that money, he started a business and slowly rebuilt his life. He’s doing so well now..."
She trailed off, her voice filled with both relief and sadness.
"But then I started to notice... my boyfriend’s luck was draining. Little things at first—he’d lose his keys, miss the meetings... but then it got worse.
Much worse. He got into that terrible car accident, and I... I realized what I’d done."
Yu Holea’s expression didn’t soften.
"So what did you do next?" she asked, her voice devoid of sympathy.
"I panicked," Assistant Su admitted, her eyes filled with regret.
"I went back to the website and begged their support team to help me swap the luck back. But they refused. They said the swap was permanent unless I bought another set of talismans."
"And you went through with it," Chu Wugao said bitterly.
"You decided to ruin someone else’s life to fix your mistake."
Assistant Su’s lip quivered as she nodded. "I didn’t know what else to do!" she cried.
"They told me I needed to find someone with really good luck to balance things out. That’s when I... I thought of Mr. Nan."
Nan Kelin’s face darkened, and his voice was icy as he spoke.
"So you swapped your boyfriend’s bad luck with mine," he said, the weight of the betrayal clear in his tone.
"I didn’t want to!" Assistant Su insisted, her voice desperate.
"But I had no choice! My brother was finally happy, and my boyfriend was suffering. I couldn’t let him suffer anymore.
I thought... I thought maybe you’d be fine since you’re so capable and lucky. I didn’t think it would ruin everything!"
Yu Holea’s eyes glinted dangerously as she stepped closer,
"You didn’t think? You played with people’s lives like they were toys. Luck isn’t just some energy you can shuffle around without consequences."
Assistant Su broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
"I’m sorry!" she wailed. "I didn’t mean to hurt anyone! I just wanted my brother to have a chance at happiness again..."
