GENE DEVOURER
Chapter 46: Trauma

Chapter 46: Trauma

That horrific memory, the day she wished she hadn’t survived but she did which was why she vowed to exterminate every mutant beast.

As she looked in the direction of this ominous aura, she saw Marcus gaze full of pure fury and a swarm of ants, larger than the rest approaching him in great rage.

It was as if Marcus was the one that killed the ant queen, and these very fire ants wanted to avenge their mother, their eyes were devoid of anything but pure rage against the one they were approaching, ready to devour him till his very bones.

Their gaze shone with pure malevolence.

However, she didn’t know which was the prey or predator.

Was the prey Marcus or the swarm of rogue ants?

Meanwhile, Marcus, with his extraordinary perception, felt a frightened gaze looking at him from a distance, and as he turned to look, he saw Ming.

Like a helpless doll, she was shivering from fear, and her eyes widened.

"Is she experiencing a trauma? Something triggered it in this battle?"

Marcus was taken aback for a split second, after all, he never would have thought that Ming would get traumatized in this battle field, but he quickly composed himself.

As Marcus looked ahead, he realized that in a couple of seconds, the traitor would escape from the beast zone.

Marcus instinctively turned his gaze toward where he believed the area boss was.

He could see a faint figure moving around it, this figure wasn’t really fast, and it was using a knife.

Marcus could hardly discern what he was using to attack the mutant mosquito just at the point where he wanted to pierce it.

But this monster only took this very figure for a fool, dodging his attacks like they were nothing while sitting atop the building comfortably like a human.

"The Invisible B rank Awakened, in a few more moments, he will exhaust his stamina, we have to act fast"

Marcus checked the loot he found.

After he had learned it, a notification popped up.

Marcus went ahead and used it to rank up his venom dance skill.

CLAANG!! CLAANG!!

The sharp, echoing sound of a weapon drew Marcus’s attention from the system notifications, and as he looked toward the direction of the sound, it was Ming. Her Cross Hell weapon had fallen from her hands, her eyes were now widened in shock.

Among the furious rogue ants that were approaching Marcus, some had diverted their force and turned towards her direction.

"Is it because that bastard traitor has escaped? I guess the influence of his ability has reduced on the rogue ants"

Marcus was infuriated, now he was forced to save Ming, not that he felt he had the responsibility to do so but ought of a little bit sympathy.

Alas, it would be too cruel to witness a traumatized person devoured by these monsters, she was defenseless and couldn’t lift a finger.

"Since my movement speed has increased, I guess I will be faster this time around"

With one step, Marcus dashed towards Ming, in a few moments, the swarm of rogue ants would descend upon her.

"Interesting, it seems she has fallen into despair.

Ming fell to her knees, tears started streaming down he cheek, but before she knew it, she felt a hand land softly on her shoulder.

Nope, she didn’t want to believe someone had come to save her, even though she knew she had seen Marcus’ traces disappear a split second earlier, after all, even if she was traumatized, she could still barely make out some details of her surroundings.

However, this hand was comforting, it reminded her of her brother’s gentle and comforting touch that she couldn’t help but place her soft hand on the hand and look up at the figure standing behind her. This very toch restored her state of mind, at least little at a time.

"Don’t get cocky, I can’t let the team leader die, what is a team without a leader?"

Noticing Ming’s soft hand landed on top of his, and her gaze fixed on him, Marcus turned his gaze away embarrassingly.

’Good grief, why am I getting shy all of a sudden’

’Wait a minute, I think I caused it first, I shouldn’t have placed my hand on her shoulder, I guess this is the result of being distant to people.’

"Whoa!! At least cut me some slack, the wielder of the ability has escaped"

Marcus noticed as the swarm of rogue ants approaching him had joined forces with those approaching Ming.

Now, they seemed very angry and were approaching Marcus and Ming with murderous intent.

He felt that his speed had increased considerably, Marcus remembered he had purchased two daggers from the system store.

He removed his hands from Ming’s shoulder, she stood and her gaze darted from one angle to another.

It seemed her confidence had started to come back but her cross-hell weapon had already rolled away to some considerable distance.

In short, she had no weapon to fight with, and without a weapon, she was defenseless.

No matter how great her Awakened ability—ambidexterity—was, without a weapon, she was harmless against opponents with weapons, the best she could do was use martial arts, but Marcus didn’t think she learned any.

’Hmm, what should I do to give her the idea that she shouldn’t worry about fighting’

Marcus thought for a while.

He then gazed at Ming figure for a moment, she had taken a battle-readied stance, as if even if she had no weapon, she could punch through the rogue ants apart with her fists.

Marcus shook his head as he looked at her clenched fists.

’Not with these soft baby-like fists"

In Marcus’ eyes, her hands were like a pretty baby hand, her fists were like when baby clenched their fists.

"I will protect you"

With these few words, Marcus placed his hand atop Ming’s head.

’hmm, isn’t this how to comfort someone?’

Ming was surprised, she released her clenched fists and turned to Marcus, her mouth opened wide.

Marcus pulled out the second stinger blade dagger from his inventory, then he moved to the front of Ming as if he wanted to defend her.

Marcus took a battle-readied stance with his daggers held in reversed grip in both hands.

"I will show you who is a real rogue"

With his eyes focused, Marcus saw as the rogue ants spread and were now approaching from every direction, and the worst thing was that, as time passed by, some rogue ants left the other members and joined forces with their kinds, their gaze locked up on Marcus.

’Cut me some slack, did their berserk skill resonate with one another?’
