Chapter 44: Worst than death

"I will have Ming reward me later for my effort"

Marcus smirked, all the team formed a battle formation on the wide lane, they were on alert against the looming threat.

"Yu!!!"

WHAM!!!

"What the hell ..."

Before Hong Yu could react to what the bully leader said, a force slammed him into a building in the distance, away from the team’s battle formation.

CRACK!! CRACK!!

Upon the incredible collision, the building surface spiderwebbed, and the building became dilapidated immediately.

Even the state Hong Yu’s body was in wasn’t known since the building had collapsed on him.

The whole team was thrown into a state of disarray.

"What happened?"

"Run! I can’t take this!!"

Upon witnessing Hong Yu’s death, one of the trembling guys among the team took heel toward the direction of the beast zone border.

"Don’t!"

SPLASH!!

Ming reached out her hand but before she could finish her words, the guy running had become headless.

Blood gushed out of the headless body with pressure, and then it fell, everyone in the team started shivering with fear.

Marcus wondered if it was stealth the area boss was using, even with his increased perception, he couldn’t tell where it was.

Not long after, Marcus started getting nervous, was this how it would end? The group being slaughtered one after the other till there wasn’t anyone standing anymore.

The worst fear isn’t death—it’s waiting for it. Watching others fall, one by one, never knowing when your turn will come or why it’s happening. The longer it takes, the deeper the fear sinks, consuming every thought.

Marcus’ breath had become heavy, and just like everyone else, his eyes widened with unspeakable fear.

’I can’t die yet, I have to complete the quest, I have to craft the rare consumable, I have to give my mom the gene elixir.

Until then, anyone that dares to face me won’t go unscathed!’

"Yu!! Damn it, I told your brother that I will protect you, I can’t even do anything, the monster is too fast"

The bully leader broke into tears, his hands clenched tightly.

"Damn it! How are we supposed to fight what we can’t see?"

Marcus gnashed his teeth angrily, he felt frustrated immediately, even with the confidence that he summoned, Marcus couldn’t seem to wrap his head around it.

Then the enemy show itself in front of them, walking majestically in a humanoid form.

However, it was this way that made it more horrifying, a terrifying beast mosquito walking in a humanoid manner, which increased the fear in the team.

It suddenly screeched with a deafening and unpleasant sound and spoke out with an unpleasant voice.

"ME EAT HUMAN, ME EVOLVE"

"For real?"

"It just started spouting some nonsense"

"That nonsense sounded like a human language"

"What did it say, did it want to spare us"

Out of fear, one female member asked and gripped the cloth of another.

"T-that will be nice of it"

Then, at once, a chirping noise started emanating from one of the buildings, and a terrifying swarm of fire ants descended from the gaping holes.

"No doubt about it, these are Rogue Ants"

Before the system could display the name of this fierce storm of ants, Marcus had already grasped the situation.

The mutant mosquito actually kept the mutant queen of the fire ant in captivity to produce soldiers for it.

"How dare you kill Yu!!"

The bully leader turned to the mutant mosquito who had gone to sit on top of a building in the blink of an eye as if it was about to watch a movie, looking down as the team teetered on the brink of despair.

"I will murder you!!"

Murderous expression was all etched on his features, it was the type etched on the features of a man who had neglected everything for a cause, and in his case, the cause was to kill that mutant mosquito.

However, the man felt a hand land gently on his shoulder as if calming him down.

"Don’t even think of it.

We are lucky enough for it to sit and watch us fight the mutant fire ants, if it faced us, we would end up dead within a blink of an eye"

At first, the bully leader was stunned when he felt a hand landed on his shoulder and a calm voice whispering to his ear.

But out of thin air, a figure started manifesting beside him, from the head to the toe, and then he realized it was the second B rank Awakened.

The B rank Awakened faced the bully leader and said: "What I mean is that it would become a one-sided massacre"

The B rank Awakened then turned to the others.

"With my invisibility power, I should be able to keep it busy. While I do that, do your best to defeat the mutant fire ants and escape. This is to ensure that no mutant beast escapes with you. I will make sure to take the area boss down with me."

With these chivalrous words, the whole group fell silent. However, the swarm of mutant fire ants didn’t seem to spare them even a moment, relentlessly closing the distance between them.

"Sir Kite, thank you for your selflessness and courage," Fiora said, her voice trembling with emotion.

Fiora turned to the team. Her expression was resolute; it was as if she had found newfound confidence and would make full use of the opportunity given to her.

"We mustn’t falter! We are humanity’s saviors! We will escape alive after we defeat these small mutant fire ants!"

All the other members started to rally, their spirits lifting. Even Ming looked emboldened, her earlier hesitation replaced by determination. However, as she turned to Sir Kite, who stood bravely, his eyes locked on the mutant mosquito, her countenance fell.

’That is some incredible confidence.’

Marcus thought about what Fiora said,

He wondered how long she could keep her cool.

’Even I had trouble dealing with one, although I was barehanded, but now, I think I have the chance of surviving better than anyone else here, with my skill, which is the same as that of the monsters.’

However, Marcus knew that dealing with hundreds of these monsters wouldn’t be an easy task for anyone, and he didn’t know if the monsters were immune to his poison powers.

’This is bad!! Come to think of it, I didn’t think of that, why didn’t I realize that venomous creatures are generally immune to their poison, shit!! And I was so confident of the Crit effect and additional poison reserve!’
