Chapter 23: Just Seeing You Tomorrow Makes Me Happy! Buying Zucchini for a New Bun Filling!
“What about the shop next door? Wanna try it?”
“Don’t. The taste isn’t good—I’ve tried it. It’s nowhere near as good as Boss Jiang’s buns!”
“Really? Let’s just buy one to taste?”
“Fine, I’m actually craving some. Let’s go.”
A number of customers walked into Fu Ji Baozi.
Most only bought one bun to sample the taste.
“Old Liu wasn’t lying—this really doesn’t compare to Boss Jiang’s.”
“If I wanted buns at this level, I could just make them myself. Forty bucks would get me two whole trays!”
“Let’s go. We’ll queue up earlier tomorrow.”
After getting used to Jiang Feng’s buns, the regulars’ tastes had unknowingly become more refined!
Zhang Quanfu thought his buns were decent—but compared to Jiang Feng’s, the gap was huge.
Almost all the customers who came to try them took one bite and left.
Fortunately, Fu Ji Baozi’s zucchini and egg buns sold relatively well.
Their version of this filling was passable, and Jiang Feng’s shop didn’t offer it.
Zhang Quanfu thought for a moment and said, “Starting tomorrow, we’ll cut the price by fifty cents for any buns Jiang Feng also sells!”
“And we need to tweak the recipe—get it as close to his as possible!”
“Got it!”
Meanwhile, Jiang Feng was cleaning up the kitchenware.
Rong Shuang gathered the bowls.
Jiang Youyou loaded them into the dishwasher and started the wash cycle.
Once everything was tidy, Jiang Feng took out twenty buns and four bowls of porridge.
Rong Shuang and Jiang Youyou’s eyes instantly lit up!
“Time to eat.”
Jiang Feng set the food on the table.
Jiang Youyou reached for a bun—
But both Jiang Feng and Rong Shuang turned to look at her in perfect unison.
“Ugh, fine, I’ll wash my hands.”
With a guilty giggle, she hopped down to scrub up.
Rong Shuang and Jiang Feng exchanged a glance and laughed.
As evening fell, the warm glow of the shop’s lights made everything feel cozy.
All the work was done.
They’d earned their keep for the day.
Now, they could share a meal with someone they cared about.
Rong Shuang rested her chin on her hand, biting her chopstick lightly as she gazed at Jiang Feng, her lips curving into a soft smile.
She loved this feeling.
Jiang Feng was in a good mood too.
Jiang Youyou, now with clean hands, plopped down beside Rong Shuang.
“Let’s eat!”
She happily grabbed a beef bun and dug in.
After dinner, Jiang Feng opened the steamer and packed twenty buns and two cups of porridge.
“For your roommate.”
“Thanks.”
“No need to be polite.”
“Um… can I come again tomorrow?” Rong Shuang asked softly, her cheeks faintly pink.
Before, she’d always been invited by Youyou.
This time, she wanted to ask herself.
She wanted to see Jiang Feng—not just to help with Youyou.
Jiang Youyou whacked Jiang Feng’s leg. “Daddy!”
See?! Teacher Rong Shuang is being extra nice to you!
She wants to see you!
Say yes already!
The little girl was practically vibrating with impatience.
Jiang Feng thought for a second, then nodded. “Sure. See you tomorrow.”
Rong Shuang happily rose onto her tiptoes. “I’ll come early! I want to go grocery shopping with you.”
Jiang Feng suggested, “Actually, why don’t you two stay back? Youyou can sleep till seven, then you can pick her up and come to the shop together.”
He could handle the shopping alone—no need to drag them along.
But his idea was unanimously rejected.
“That doesn’t sound good.”
“Daddy, we’re going with you!”
Both of them wanted to stick with Jiang Feng.
He chuckled. “Alright, we’ll all go.”
“Teacher Rong, meet us at the market entrance around 5:10.”
“Got it!”
With plans set, the three waited in the shop a little longer.
The new sign was supposed to arrive today, but the installers were running late.
Jiang Feng had considered sending Rong Shuang home first, but she and Youyou were engrossed in a game of charades, laughing together.
At 6:40, the workers finally arrived and installed the sign.
A simple white background with red lettering—nothing flashy, but clean and pleasant.
Jiang Feng was satisfied and paid the 1,000 yuan fee.
“Jiang Ji Baozi” now officially had its name.
Neighbors passing by stopped to chat.
“You’ve got a sign now—congrats, Boss Jiang!”
“This looks proper! I was worried you’d pack up and leave any day.”
“Same! Now I can relax—no more fear of you vanishing overnight.”
Jiang Feng exchanged a few more words with them before they urged him to rest.
“Go home, Boss Jiang—you’ve worked hard today.”
“Yeah, don’t slack on tomorrow’s buns!”
“We’d riot if breakfast got delayed.”
After saying goodbye, Jiang Feng walked Rong Shuang to the street corner and waited until her ride arrived.
The moment her car pulled away, he got a text:
“See you tomorrow.”
She already missed him and Youyou.
Jiang Feng replied: “See you tomorrow.”
Then, holding Youyou’s hand, he strolled home under the evening breeze.
Back at the apartment, Jiang Feng and Youyou took a bath together.
Afterward, he tossed their clothes into the washer and settled on the sofa with Youyou to watch TV.
Rong Shuang arrived home to an ambush.
Tang Hemei burst out of her room the second the door opened.
“The buns! I’m starving!”
“I barely ate lunch—been holding out for these all evening!”
Rong Shuang set her bag down, amused. “I can tell. You look like a wolf eyeing prey.”
“Here, don’t overdo it.”
She handed over the buns and porridge.
Tang Hemei collapsed onto the couch and devoured them.
“Heaven!”
“These are so damn good!”
After inhaling three buns in record time, she finally leaned back with a groan.
Full.
But so worth it.
If not for the risk of bursting, she could’ve eaten three more.
No—she’d have finished them all.
“So, Rong’er… how’s it going with your crush?”
Now fed, Tang Hemei turned to gossip.
At the mention of Jiang Feng, Rong Shuang’s heartbeat quickened. “I like him even more now.”
Tang Hemei rolled her eyes. “Wifey syndrome is a disease. Get help.”
“Shut up.”
“But does he like you back?”
Rong Shuang bit her lip. “Not sure.”
“What do you mean ‘not sure’?”
“I feel like he’s keeping some distance.”
Tang Hemei mused, “Could he still have feelings for his ex? They were married for years.”
Rong Shuang hesitated. “I don’t think so. He refused to meet her today.”
“Then what’s the hold-up?”
“No idea. But this is nice too.”
Seeing him every day.
Sharing meals.
Tang Hemei grinned. “Just confess already! Go for the knockout!”
Rong Shuang’s face burned. “Let’s wait a bit longer.”
She’d considered it—but the more she liked him, the harder it was to say.
What if he said no?
Tang Hemei stared in disbelief.
The campus goddess, pursued by countless rich heirs, was now scared of rejection?!
Unbelievable.
“I’m showering and going to bed. Need to meet him early tomorrow.”
“Go on, lovesick puppy.”
“Hmph.”
After her shower, Rong Shuang texted Jiang Feng:
“Heading to sleep. Goodnight.”
“Say goodnight to Youyou for me too.”
Jiang Feng replied: “Goodnight.”
Reading those two words, she drifted off peacefully.
Next morning.
Jiang Feng and Youyou arrived at the market entrance to find Rong Shuang already waiting.
Passersby kept glancing her way—including a few shopkeepers who earned elbow jabs from their wives.
Spotting Jiang Feng, she jogged over, bright-eyed. “Good morning!”
“Good morning, Teacher Rong Shuang!” Youyou chirped.
The two high-fived enthusiastically.
Jiang Feng’s mood lifted as he led them into the market.
At a vegetable stall, he picked something new.
“Twenty pounds of zucchini, and two bags of wood ear mushrooms.”
Youyou and Rong Shuang exchanged surprised looks.
A new filling?!
