Fortunate to Have You This Lifetime -
Chapter 1338
Chapter 1338: Chapter 1338
Jane McCain and Allen Rivera lingered downstairs for a while before heading upstairs to go home.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw the whole family sitting around the table, waiting for her to come back for dinner.
She had been in such a rush when she left, she didn’t explain clearly. Now everyone sees Allen in person and suddenly realizes: Janie’s boyfriend is really here.
It has to be said that the appearance of the two at the door was quite striking.
The woman is youthful and beautiful, and the man is tall and handsome.
Jane, with her tall figure, somehow appeared delicate and charming next to Allen, which even surprised Ruby Spencer.
Where had she ever seen her daughter look like this?
— Cheeks flushed pink, eyes bright and lively, the smile on her lips sweet enough to make one cringe, with even her hair seemingly overflowing with joy, just short of having the word ’happiness’ written all over her face!
Jane happily held onto Allen Rivera’s arm, walked up to her grandparents, and made introductions.
There are many types of male attractiveness: some are alluringly androgynous, some are devilishly rebellious, but Allen’s is clearly the type most favored by older folks: proper, clean, and steady.
Just standing there in front of them, he gives off a sense of strength and composure.
"Happy New Year, Grandfather and Grandmother." Allen didn’t show any signs of being an outsider, lightly putting down the gift he had, and warmly greeted them, "I apologize for coming unannounced today and disrupting your plans. I hope you don’t mind."
"Oh... you’re not disrupting anything, not at all. Since you’re Janie’s friend, come sit and eat with us." The grandmother turned to her aunt, "Um... Ellis, add another set of tableware."
Not only do they need to add a set of tableware, but they also need an extra chair.
The position had to be next to Jane, but who would sit on the other side carried some significance.
If it’s a female elder, the guest might feel restrained; if it’s a male elder, the uncle has to sit next to the grandparents to show respect... Ultimately, considering various subtle factors, Isabelle’s boyfriend Jesse ends up sitting next to Allen.
The elders thought: they are of the same age group, perhaps they will have some common topics to talk about.
Quite unexpectedly, Isabelle’s boyfriend suddenly stood up, nervously extended his right hand, and said, "Mr. Rivera, it’s been a long time."
Everyone was surprised.
Allen also paused for a moment. He slightly examined the scholarly man with glasses in front of him, and soon recognized him.
"Secretary Jesse?" Allen revealed a faint smile and shook his hand, "It’s been a while, I didn’t expect to see you here."
Jane asked in surprise, "You two know each other?"
"Yes, Secretary Jesse assisted in the investigation during a previous case," Allen said.
"What case? How is it related to Jesse?!" Her aunt’s voice was particularly tense as she instinctively grasped Isabelle’s hand, worried that the man her daughter was dating had some bad history.
Though Allen hadn’t yet met her aunt, he could guess her identity from her reactions, and calmly said, "Don’t worry, it was the previous mayor’s case. We had consulted Secretary Jesse for some relevant information, and he cooperated well with our work."
He didn’t want to affect the festive atmosphere, so he spoke in an understated manner, though everyone’s expressions were varied.
This city and Clearwater are different cities but belong to Wheatley, with Clearwater City being the biggest city with the best judicial resources. So even though the two cities are of equal rank, cases that couldn’t be handled here would usually be turned over to Clearwater City’s Prosecutor’s Office.
Similar to ancient times when a supervisory censor would oversee county officials. The county official might seem imposing, but in front of the censor, still had to obediently accept supervision.
No wonder Isabelle’s boyfriend was nervous; even the mayor had been thoroughly investigated, so the mayor’s secretary had to be even more cautious.
Her aunt’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Allen, almost glowing, and warmly hosted, "Oh, sit down, sit down and eat. Janie really is something, not giving an early heads up, so we weren’t prepared. Mr. Rivera, what dishes do you like?..."
