Chapter 1304: Chapter 1304

Allen Rivera didn’t come back all night.

Fiona Lake got news from the police station that they had found out who owned the monkey, but nobody was home, and they suspect they hid in the mountains.

Now a large group has blocked several paths down the mountain, and some officers have gone into the mountains to search for people. Allen Rivera, Ray Cooper, and Lucas Tucker are also staying there and won’t be back for a while.

"It feels like a major operation..." Jane McCain remarked upon hearing the news.

Fiona Lake said, "In places like this, it’s rare to have more than a few murder cases a year. This time so many people died, of course, the higher-ups are taking it seriously."

"Did many people die?"

"Five died, and one is injured, recuperating in the hospital."

Jane McCain was a bit shocked and couldn’t help asking, "Are the birds of prey in the mountains so fierce?"

Fiona Lake explained, "It’s a bird called the black-eared kite, relatively large in size. People here call it a local eagle. But the cause of death wasn’t being pecked by birds, they fell to their deaths.

There’s a long, steep stairway in the village built from stones that needs repairs, but the funds haven’t been approved yet. If someone accidentally falls while walking on it, they’d either die or be seriously injured.

The black-eared kites chose that spot to attack people, swooping down in groups of three or five. Even a strong man isn’t a match."

Jane McCain listened, trembling with fear; these birds are clearly exploiting the timing and location to bully people.

"Will Allen Rivera’s group be in danger over there?"

Fiona Lake shook her head, "The black-eared kites aren’t stupid; they always target people who are alone. If it’s a group of people, animals will assess their strength."

After speaking, she sighed and said worriedly, "What’s puzzling now is why every time the black-eared kites attack someone, it happens to be a household that had ’mountain spirits’ enter. Could a single monkey actually command birds in the sky? It’s too strange."

Seeing her deeply invested in the case, Jane McCain comforted her, "Once we catch that person, we can ask what happened."

Fiona Lake smiled at this, "Yes."

The two were talking in the dormitory when Juliet Stewart came in with a pot of hot water. Seeing Jane McCain also there, she sneered, "Mr. Rivera didn’t come back all night, and you are still in the mood to chat here."

Jane McCain: "..."

Fiona Lake laughed, "Yes, you’re the only one in the world who cares about Mr. Rivera. We are cold-blooded and don’t care about Mr. Rivera."

Juliet Stewart glanced resentfully at Jane McCain, put down the water pot, and lay down on the bed, turning her back to them, ignoring them.

"So sullen." Fiona Lake snorted and said to Jane McCain, "Let’s go out for a walk and buy some breakfast."

Jane McCain wasn’t really in the mood to eat but felt stifled staying indoors, so she thought going out for a walk might be a good idea to keep her mind off things.

The past two days have been sunny, no more snow. The snow on the roadside has melted and mixed with dust, making the roadsides muddy and difficult to walk.

Jane McCain walked slowly with Fiona Lake, passing a Bun Shop with good business; many people were lining up to buy buns.

"Do you want to eat buns?" Fiona Lake said, "So many people are buying them, they must taste good, let’s buy a few to take back."

Jane McCain didn’t want to disappoint, so she joined Fiona Lake in the line to enjoy the buzz.

While listlessly lining up, Fiona Lake suddenly lightly nudged her elbow and whispered, "Look over there!"

Look where?

Jane McCain was puzzled.

Fiona Lake gestured with her eyes.

Jane McCain looked up in confusion and was surprised to see a monkey squatting on the low wall next to the Bun Shop.

Because its fur was grey and it was sitting still, she almost didn’t notice it at first glance.

The monkey was staring at the steamer, probably hungry and wanting to eat buns.

"It actually came to town again." Fiona Lake whispered, "It’s possible that the person Mr. Rivera’s group is trying to catch is also hiding in town."
