Chapter 1254: Chapter 1254

Marcel Jefferson returned to his seat, Calvin and Zev were both visibly excited, giving him a thumbs up.

Marcel sat next to Purple Summers and smiled at her, "How was that?"

Purple Summers also smiled, "Yes, much better than before."

They had gained a small advantage with the questioning of the first witness.

The second witness was Hans Geoffrey’s psychiatrist, who was also the defense witness brought in by Purple Summers.

The psychiatrist could not testify about the events of the night in question, but could speak to Hans Geoffrey’s mental state.

"IE-Sex-Addiction, cybersex addiction, refers to having sexual fantasies about virtual world characters or illusions. It’s a type of addictive behavior, like smoking or alcohol addiction, and so on."

"Can you explain to us the causes of this psychological disorder?" Calvin asked.

The psychiatrist replied, "There are many causes, most involving an outlet for negative emotions, possibly sustained high pressure, or feeling misunderstood, or unsatisfied sexual desires, or perhaps not receiving enough love during childhood."

"Doctor, as you can see, my client’s behavior in the chat logs appears extremely depraved and dark, with frequent mentions of sex, death, violence, and abuse, which is starkly different from his real-life image. Do you think this is normal?"

"It is normal for patients to express a completely different side of themselves through online chatting to vent their emotions and stress. In fact, many patients may behave very evilly online, yet lead respectable lives in the real world with stable jobs and families, indistinguishable from ordinary people."

"So do you think he would act out the content from his online chats in real life?"

"No. As I mentioned earlier, he uses this behavior strictly as a way to release pressure. No matter how shocking his words in the chats, they are only an outlet and would not translate to real-world actions. If they did, it would no longer be a stress-relief but instead a source of stress."

"Understood, no one wants to add more stress. Thank you."

After asking his questions, Calvin returned to his seat.

Graham Burke stood up to question the psychiatrist, "May I ask how many patients you have treated so far?"

The psychiatrist hesitated, "Hundreds? Maybe thousands?"

"Is Mr. Hans Geoffrey among the most severe cases you have treated?"

"Not really..." the psychiatrist answered, "I would say he’s about mid-level."

"Doctor, I would like you to recall carefully, in your entire experience, has any of your patients ever acted out their fantasies in real life?"

The psychiatrist hesitated, "Maybe..."

Graham Burke pressed on, "Can you guarantee that among the hundreds or even thousands of patients you have treated, not a single one has committed a crime and none ever will?"

The psychiatrist’s expression changed slightly, pressing his lips together in silence.

"Can you guarantee it, doctor?" Graham Burke asked again.

The psychiatrist slowly shook his head, "No, I can’t."

Graham Burke laughed coldly, glancing over at Purple Summers, but addressed the psychiatrist, "That’s really a shame. If you could guarantee it, I guess I’d be sending all the rapists in prison over to you for treatment."

Purple Summers remained impassive, ignoring his provocation.

...

After a recess, both parties temporarily adjourned.

In the break room, everyone was silent.

The second witness had proven ineffective, casting a gloomy and oppressive atmosphere.

Hans Geoffrey held Abigail Thompson’s hand, the couple conversing softly.

Purple Summers watched them, after a long contemplation, said, "Hans Geoffrey, you won’t need to take the stand in a while. I will have your wife testify instead."

Hans Geoffrey was taken aback, "But you said before that I must testify myself to explain everything so the jury would believe I’m innocent?"
