Chapter 1582: Chapter 1143: Wait for Me to Go Over and Kill It
The Bridgehead Plane has always been quiet, aside from the trees of the dead scattered across the entire plane. Other crops are no longer present, as the plane has been transformed into a world brimming with the dead and the trees of the dead.
A substantial number of undead and corpses were dragged here from the Undead City, covering the plane entirely. With the accumulation of the Breath of Death, the ground has been layered thick with Breathing Soil. Aside from the trees of the dead, this soil is unsuitable for growing other crops.
Dozens of intelligent undead have been dispatched here, including Cabu Twelve, KABU 21, Sage Cabu...
They are primarily tasked with tending to the trees of the dead and occasionally scooping concentrated Breathing Soil to transport it to the pile of rubble atop a nearby hill.
The task is ridiculously leisurely. Cabu Twelve ambled along with a load of Breathing Soil on his back and even had the time to ask Sage Cabu ahead of him, "Sir, why are we hauling this Breathing Soil to the hill? The soil there is already piled high, and we keep carrying more..."
"Shh. Do you want to die? Stop talking nonsense," Sage Cabu scolded him softly.
"Oh, I was just curious," Cabu Twelve quickly lowered his voice and replied in a hushed tone.
Sage Cabu shook his head and said solemnly, "Whatever the Lord instructs us to do, we do it. Curiosity is not a good thing. There are things it’s better not to know than to know, understand? Because if you know them, you’ll become a target for Soul Search."
Chilled to the bone, Cabu Twelve dared not ask anything further.
Seeing his reaction, Sage Cabu worried he might have frightened him too much, and reassured him, "But we’re mainly here to plant fruit trees, so this isn’t an important place. Concentrating Breathing Soil in one location probably has something to do with a Lord slumbering there. Just don’t disturb the Lord, and you’ll be fine."
Overhead, a nearby tree opened its eyes, glanced at Sage Cabu, and muttered internally: Not important? If it’s not important, why would we War Tree People be deployed here? This place is shrouded in deathly gloom and utterly dull...
Entirely unaware that his spoken words had been overheard, Sage Cabu continued rambling on, hauling Breathing Soil to the slope and dumping it on the pile.
On their way back, they happened to see someone activating the Teleportation Array and quickly moved over to help.
A beam of light burst forth from the Teleportation Array, and Single-footed Deke emerged within it, accompanied by a heap of Deadman’s Fruits. Noticing the Cabus, he promptly called out, "Perfect timing! Come, come, come! Move the fruits off the array; there’s more coming behind!"
Having handled such tasks countless times, the Cabus rushed forward and quickly cleared the Teleportation Array. Single-footed Deke communicated back, triggering the array to prepare for the next round of teleportation. Taking advantage of the moment, Cabu Twelve sidled up to Deke and asked ingratiatingly, "Lord Deke, there are so many Soul Fruits here. Could we maybe taste a few?"
The name "Deadman’s Fruits" was unpalatable, so elsewhere they were renamed Soul Fruits. Thanks to their pure Breath of Death, they could be directly converted into Soul Energy without refinement, making them the best resource for enhancing souls.
Single-footed Deke shot him a glare and replied, "Taste, taste, taste. You always want to taste something. Why do you need such strong Soul Energy anyway? Trying to surpass me, huh? Want to test if I’ll beat you up?"
Cabu Twelve shrank back, pulling his neck in, and muttered discontentedly, "Alright, alright, no tasting, geez, why beat me up..."
"Haha, you’re just foolish. Even the questions you ask lack foresight. Lord Deke can’t decide the allocation of these Soul Fruits, so why even ask him? It’s practically asking for trouble," Sage Cabu chuckled.
"Huh? Even Lord Deke can’t decide? But..." Cabu Twelve was aghast. To the Old Liches of Undead City, Single-footed Deke was known as the most powerful soul in the city. When it came to sheer Soul Level, she even surpassed the Soul Devouring King Rigo. Was there anything beyond her control?
Sage Cabu shrugged. For the strongest soul in Undead City, Single-footed Deke, to be reduced to personally escorting Soul Fruits every day—it didn’t take much thought to grasp the situation. Liches really lacked brains.
The Teleportation Array hummed repetitively, activating over a dozen more times, delivering thousands of crates of Soul Fruits, which now surrounded the array tightly in heaps.
Sage Cabu was also stunned, "Why are there so many Soul Fruits?"
Single-footed Deke explained, "It’s harvest season, an unprecedented harvest. That such fruit trees could even grow in a place like Undead City—unbelievable."
Sage Cabu glanced at the fruit-laden surroundings. Given that the Bridgehead Plane was situated in the Boundless Space Hole, its environment was even harsher than Undead City. If even here fruit trees could grow, then certainly they could grow in Undead City.
After becoming accustomed to the phenomenon, Sage Cabu had grown unfazed. But hearing Deke’s remark rekindled the astonishment he experienced upon first arriving, "Indeed, indeed. They must be gods of farming!"
Unwittingly, Sage Cabu had invoked Ange’s divine title. Meanwhile, other undead began arriving one by one. Dozens of liches carried crates of fruit and climbed to the hillside, where they promptly emptied their loads near the rubble pile.
With more and more Deadman’s Fruits piling up, they eventually formed a small hill. As the undead worked, Sage Cabu suddenly noticed that they seemed to be stepping into soft mud.
Looking down, he discovered that the death energy had thickened into a fog, lightly floating above the Breathing Soil. The soil itself had been permeated with Liquid of Breath of Death, squishing audibly underfoot.
"Wow, Mist of Breath of Death—so concentrated!" Sage Cabu suddenly had the impulse to lie down and inhale heavily. This wasn’t ordinary Mist of Breath of Death; it was enriched by the Soul Fruits’ pure essence, virtually equivalent to Soul Energy.
But when he returned, he found the mist-like Breath of Death had completely vanished from the ground. Even the Breathing Soil previously dumped there now appeared cracked and shriveled, crumbling into powder at the slightest touch—a texture resembling desertified earth.
This indicated that all the Breath of Death within the soil had been completely consumed. Although this phenomenon had happened before, it had never been so strikingly evident.
It was precisely this observation that led Sage Cabu to speculate that a mighty entity was sleeping within. After all, even the combined supply from the entire Undead City couldn’t satisfy the demands of the being within.
"If even a Lord such as Deke, the Lord of Mourning, couldn’t absorb this much death energy, then the slumbering entity inside... Could it be the legendary Black Crystal Soul?" Sage Cabu murmured quietly.
At that moment, the pile of rubble on the hill suddenly exploded. A pitch-black skeleton, glittering with faint star-like points, shot skyward, hovering as it surveyed its surroundings. It then scratched its skull in puzzlement, "Why is Ange summoning me?"
Lowering its gaze to inspect its frame, it flexed its joints experimentally. Satisfied, the Monarch nodded, then clasped its hands together forcefully. Two wisps of Chaos Mist swirled forth, gradually condensing into a Death Scythe.
"A fight? A Mourning Bone Dragon?" It seemed to have received Ange’s message, as the soul fire blazing in its eye sockets flared several times brighter. "Wait for me—I’ll go slay it now."
With that, it lightly slashed the Void before it with the Death Scythe, opening a Space Rift, and dove headfirst into it.
