Chapter 82: Mira’s fear
Mira’s eyes widened at Zamian’s words. She hadn’t expected him to say such cheesy things, especially not during work. Okay, now could someone explain to her where he had learned that? A smile crept onto Zamian’s lips as he realized he was finally getting the attention he craved.
"You shouldn’t be saying this here," Mira managed to say, surprise lacing her voice.
Zamian leaned in closer, his warm breath brushing against her ear as he asked, "Then where should I say it?" With that, he gave her ear a soft, low suck before teasingly biting it. The unexpected sensation sent shivers down her spine, and she couldn’t help but gasp.
Mira’s cheeks flushed a bright pink, and she turned to face him, her heart racing. He smirked, saying, "Now you fit perfectly with this pink desk."
"You... who taught you that?" Mira asked, her voice laced with a mix of curiosity and disbelief. She felt flustered but intrigued.
Zamian raised an eyebrow, a playful smile dancing on his lips. "Taught me what?"
Mira sighed, feeling a bit overwhelmed. "It seems you don’t want anything..... I’ll just continue my work now." She picked up a pen and pretended to jot down notes, hoping to focus on anything but his piercing gaze.
"But I already told you what I wanted." Zamian’s tone was teasing, yet there was a hint of sincerity behind his words. The duality in his voice left her breathless.
Mira stilled, caught off guard. Why was Zamian acting so differently? She did not hate it, but they were at work, for goodness’ sake. Just then, as someone knocked at the door, Zamian looked up, his attention diverted. The door slowly open, revealing a lady with wide eyes. She hadn’t expected to see a pink table—or anyone else, for that matter—in Zamian’s office. It was widely known that he despised interruptions while he was busy with work, making this scene all the more shocking.
Still in a state of surprise, she spoke, "Good afternoon, Mr. Zamian. You have a meeting in thirty minutes."
Zamian glanced at her, and the atmosphere in the room became chilling. His gaze was steely, and the air thickened with unspoken tension. "Good afternoon, Miss..." She paused, her gaze shifting to the nameplate on the desk. "Mira."
The woman’s expression shifted from shock to realization. "Oh! I’m so sorry. Good afternoon, Mrs. Mira." The added title made Mira’s cheeks flush even more, but she felt a strange pride swell within her.
Mira wondered why Zamian took this so seriously. It wasn’t really a big deal, so why was he making it such an issue? She responded, "Good afternoon to you, too." Her voice was polite but tinged with uncertainty.
Zamian then added, "You may go." The lady nodded and exited the room, glancing back one last time at the unusual scene. Mira noticed that Zamian only spared her a glance, and in a strange way, it made her feel happy—at least he wasn’t entirely focused on her.
Once the lady left, the news had already begun to spread like wildfire around the company. Whispers of Zamian’s new office arrangement circulated quickly. It was surprising yet shocking news for everyone, and many wondered if this was one of the reasons why the dress code had changed. Everyone in the office was intrigued by the sudden shift in Zamian’s behavior, and whispers of his new dynamic with Mira echoed throughout the hallways.
Zamian then spoke, "The chauffeur will be here to pick you up in one hour. I might take longer than expected with the meeting." He added, "He’ll drop you off."
Mira nodded in response, feeling a mix of gratitude and shock. She could hardly believe the strange turn of events. It seemed like only yesterday she was just an employee, working diligently without Zamian’s presence. Now, everything felt different—.
Zamian picked up a file and some papers from his desk, his movements fluid and confident. Just then, his personal assistant entered and greeted Mira. "Good afternoon, Mrs. Mira." He nodded respectfully before taking the file from Zamian. The way everyone treated her with such formality made her feel a bit out of place, and she couldn’t help but wonder why.
Mira couldn’t help but wonder why everyone was treating her so formally. Couldn’t they act a bit more casual? She wished they would just be friendly; this overly formal behavior felt strange to her. She was used to the hustle and bustle of the office, where laughter and casual banter were commonplace. The sudden change in atmosphere felt stifling.
As Zamian continued to work, Mira decided to keep herself busy. She focused on her tasks, trying to drown out the swirling thoughts in her mind. Each time she caught a glimpse of him, her heart raced. Zamian was handsome, with his sharp jawline and intense gaze, but it was something about him that drew her in something she was yet to discover.
Before he left, Zamian turned to Mira and winked at her before saying, "I’ll try to come back early today." Mira nodded in response, a smile creeping onto her lips. With that, she decided to begin her work. At least she was almost done, and she had to finish.
When she completed her tasks, she made her way downstairs. After stepping out of the office, she entered the elevator and headed down, her thoughts still lingering on Zamian’s playful words. Could this really be the start of something new between them?
Upon reaching the ground floor, she met the chauffeur, who greeted her formally. "Good afternoon, Mrs. Mira," he said with a slight bow, and Mira could only smile in return.
Entering the car, she sat quietly while chatting with Lily on her phone for a bit to keep herself entertained. They discussed everything from work to personal lives, and for a moment, Mira felt a sense of normalcy return.
As they arrived at the mansion, Nana greeted, "Welcome back, Mrs. Mira." Mira smiled in response, "Thank you." She walked to the dining room and ate silently; it was calm and quiet. Once she finished, she headed upstairs to take a bath.
In her mind, she couldn’t shake the fear of Zamian leaving. What if he left and didn’t return for months? A pang of anxiety gripped her at the thought of being abandoned and feeling lonely again. But why was she feeling this way? It was something she had wanted, right? To live independently and enjoy some peace. Yet, it felt like he should stay with her for at least a little while—even just a week would suffice.
Even their honeymoon had been interrupted just two days in by a meeting, and the thought still irked her. But did she really need to dwell on that? After all, it was just a contract—a deal made in haste that had somehow turned into something much more complicated than she had anticipated.
Mira found herself grappling with her emotions, feeling as though she was using the contract as a shield to justify her anxiety. It was meant to provide her with security and structure, yet it felt increasingly like a burden. Instead of comfort, the terms of their agreement only seemed to amplify her fears of instability and abandonment. Was she truly okay with their arrangement, or was she simply convincing herself that it was enough?
As she pondered these questions, a sense of confusion washed over her. She yearned for the simplicity of love, not the entanglements of obligation. Perhaps she needed to confront these feelings head-on rather than letting them fester in the back of her mind.
As she lay on the bed, she took out her phone and opened the Hellogram app to pass the time. She scrolled mindlessly, barely registering the images on the screen. Just then, the door opened, and Zamian stepped in. Mira raised her head, and their eyes met briefly. Her heart raced at the sight of him, tall and imposing, with an aura that demanded attention. She quickly shifted her gaze back down to the bed, feeling flustered.
Zamian quietly entered the bathroom, the door clicking shut behind him. After some time, he emerged, looking fresh and confident. Mira dropped her phone, realizing she had spent quite a while with it. This was the longest she had focused on her phone in a while, and it felt oddly liberating to disconnect.
Then, Zamian lay down beside her, the mattress sinking slightly under his weight. He spoke first, "You didn’t even welcome your husband." The teasing lilt in his voice made her smile.
Mira turned to him, a slight smile forming on her lips. "Welcome back," she replied, feeling warmth bloom in her chest.
Zamian shook his head playfully. "It’s not the same," he said, his tone light yet somehow meaningful. He pulled her into a hug, and she found herself nestled against him, feeling safe and secure.
As she nestled against him, Mira found herself gazing at the ceiling, her thoughts spiraling. "What if—just what if—we don’t get a divorce?" she whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop herself.
