Chapter 38: The Pain
Mira sat in the car, her mind abuzz with anticipation. To pass the time and stay productive, she grabbed her phone. As the car rolled smoothly along the road, she began checking various online updates. She knew these updates would be useful for the upcoming charity gala, a cause she was deeply involved in. Mira scrolled through event details, confirmed appointments, and reviewed her notes, all while glancing out the window at the passing scenery. The digital distraction helped her stay focused and calm as they neared Zamian’s company.
The car came to a smooth halt, and Mira’s eyes widened as she took in the massive building before her. It was a towering skyscraper with a sleek glass façade that reflected the city’s skyline. Mira felt a mix of awe and disbelief. She had thought that the main branch she had seen earlier was impressive, but this was on another level entirely. The grandeur of the building made it clear just how wealthy and influential Zamian was to own such an impressive structure.
James stepped out of the car and opened the door for her. As Mira exited, he handed her a black card. "This card will give you access to the elevator and to Mr. Zamian’s office. The elevator will take you to the upper floors. Swipe this card to enter, and then use it to press the button for Mr. Zamian’s office."
Mira nodded as James guided her to the elevator. Once inside, the doors closed behind her, and she noticed that the card he had given her was a VVIP pass, emphasizing the exclusivity of this level of access. She held the pink box of cookies tightly, her anticipation growing as she stared at the cityscape visible through the elevator’s glass walls. The view was breathtaking, but she tried not to look down too much, feeling a pang of vertigo as the elevator ascended.
After a few moments, the elevator stopped, and the doors opened to a spacious, luxurious hallway. Mira noticed there were only two doors in this expansive area, hinting at the grandeur of Zamian’s office. As she approached the glass door, she saw there were two access points: one for the card swipe and another for a fingerprint scan.
Mira swiped the black card through the reader, and the door clicked open. She took a deep breath and stepped inside, her eyes widening in amazement as she took in the sight before her.
Zamian sat at his desk, staring blankly at the stack of papers before him. His mind kept wandering to Mira, and he found himself questioning why he couldn’t stop thinking about her. It was unusual for him to be so distracted, especially with the pressing work he had to attend to.
The ringing of the doorbell broke his concentration. Zamian reached for the button beside him, a mechanism he used to control the flow of visitors. If he wasn’t expecting anyone or wanted to avoid disturbances, pressing the button would signal the visitor to leave. However, today he didn’t press it, so the door opened, and a woman walked in.
The clinking of her heels interrupted the quiet. She wore a short pencil skirt and high heels, her white shirt revealing a significant amount of cleavage. Her hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail. She approached Zamian’s desk, holding a set of documents.
"Here are the documents you requested," she said, her voice wavering slightly. She had begged Zamian’s personal assistant to pass on these documents and had finally succeeded. With Zamian’s assistant occupied, Zamia voice was cool as he addressed her, not even looking in her direction. He didn’t look up from his papers, his mind still preoccupied with thoughts of Mira.
As the woman bent forward to place the documents on the desk, she tried to show more cleavage. Zamian, however, remained oblivious, focused entirely on his work. Just as Zamian was about to speak again, the door opened once more, interrupting him.
Mira, who had entered, was startled by the unexpected sight.
Lisa wondered who could have come in, knowing that even Zamian’s personal assistant wouldn’t do this without reason. Zamian turned at the noise and saw Mira. Her smile quickly faltered as the cookie box she was holding slipped from her hand and fell to the floor.
Mira, flustered, turned and began to walk quickly toward the elevator. Zamian immediately stood, surprised, and hurried after her. Mira, already moving fast, reached the elevator. As the doors closed behind her, Zemian reached out, but it was too late.
Lisa, who had witnessed the entire scene, stood in stunned silence. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen. It was completely out of character for Zamian to react with such urgency and surprise. She knew that no one would believe the chaos that had unfolded, even if it were told as a joke.
Mira held her chest as she squeezed her dress tightly. A deep pain surged inside her, something she had never felt before. Her lips trembled slightly, and tears shimmered in her eyes. She couldn’t believe she was on the verge of crying. Was it because of the hard work she put into making the cookies, only for Zamian to be with another woman? A bitter smile spread across her face as she questioned what she was even doing here. The ache in her heart felt suffocating.
She bent her head down, overwhelmed by the intense emotions. Mira made her way downstairs and outside. James, who was waiting for her, noticed her distress.
"Miss Mira," he said.
"Let’s go. Move the car. Now," she replied, her voice strained as she tried to hold back her tears.
James, puzzled by her sudden urgency, asked, "Is there a problem?"
"Please, just do it," Mira said, her voice breaking. She knew if she spoke more, the tears would start flowing uncontrollably.
James, taken aback by her reaction, got into the car and began to drive. Shortly after, he noticed a car following them. Realizing it was Zamian’s car, he pulled over.
Mira, noticing the stop, asked, "Why did you stop?"
"I’m sorry, ma’am. It was an order," James replied.
Mira nodded, understanding but still upset. She couldn’t blame James for following orders, but her frustration was mounting. "Open the door," she instructed.
James, unsure of what was happening, complied and opened the door for her. Mira stepped out, slammed the door behind her.
At this point, it was the other way around
it was Zamian who surprised her.
