Chapter 53: Everyone is Selfish

"However, you don’t seem to be much affected; that’s great." Kevin nodded. A slight smile unknowingly appeared at the corner of his mouth, but he quickly suppressed it.

Lilian noticed the subtle change and couldn’t help but cover her mouth and chuckle. Marriage was indeed a sweet experience.

When Laura saw him arrive, the joy in her eyes was unmistakable. "Seeing you come to find Jessie right away, I feel much more at ease. But don’t worry—no matter how far they go, I will never let them affect you two."

It wasn’t that she didn’t think of Kevin as a good person, but everyone was selfish in this world. Even if he didn’t say a word about it, his family might.

On the other hand, he seemed to read her concern and assured her, "Mom, don’t worry. Since Jessie married me, we will go through thick and thin together as a couple. There’s no running away."

His words made Laura smile with satisfaction. Yes—as a couple, they should support each other. But what about her husband, William?

She sighed, shaking her head. How foolish she was, still talking about love at her age like a young girl.

Fortunately, Jessie was luckier than she was.

Jessie patted Laura on the back, signaling that she didn’t have to worry. All of a sudden, she seemed to remember something and looked at Kevin with concern.

"Mr. Harper, shouldn’t you be at work now? With you coming here out of the blue, won’t your boss dock your pay?"

She didn’t want her issues to affect Kevin’s work, which would make her feel guilty.

He never expected her to worry about his bonus at this moment. He shook his head and replied, "Don’t worry; I’ve already informed my boss. He understands and won’t dock my bonus or anything."

Jessie felt relieved hearing this and urged, “Mom, you can rest easy since Kevin is here. You should go back now and go out less in the coming days.”

"My colleague came with me. I’ll have him take you back, Mom. It’ll be safer that way," Kevin said while pulling out his phone and making a call.

Jessie didn’t refuse. In this situation, knowing someone would take Laura home safely was reassuring.

Soon, a car was parked at the door. After Kevin saw Laura off, he returned to the shop.

"What are you planning on doing next? I’ll be with you," he said seriously.

If Jessie had no idea about what to do, he would simply use his influence to shut down those live streaming accounts and hot topics.

However, he still wanted to see what her ideas were.

She showed him her edited memo, a smile forming at her lips.

"Mr. Harper, if it’s fine for you, can you accompany me back?" fr\eewebno vel .c(o)m

After seeing the contents of the memo, he couldn’t help but look at her with approval.

"Sure."

Once Jessie had sent off her customers, she closed the shop and hung up the "Closed Today" sign before signaling to Lilian.

"Lily, I’ll head out first."

"Okay, call me if anything comes up."

"Don’t worry. I’ll handle it, so you can just relax."

Lilian originally wanted to join them, but she thought twice and decided not to disturb the couple.

After saying goodbye to Lilian, Jessie got into Kevin’s car and inquired, "Mr. Harper, you know a lot of clients. Do you have any who works in the media?"

Kevin nodded. "Yes, I do. If you need help, just let me know."

She didn’t hold back and replied, "They want to move to the city, right? Back then, they took most of my dad’s compensation money and used it to build new homes for themselves back in the village. Those cousins of mine took the money to start businesses, get married, and live lavishly. I want to record all of this and expose them to the media, bit by bit."

Only by presenting solid evidence could this matter be thoroughly resolved.

She didn’t care how many times she had been a hot topic or how many netizens had criticized her.

After all, the internet had no memory; it was fickle. They were all criticizing her right now, but once she pulled out the evidence, all those netizens would feel like they had been deceived. She wanted to see what her cousins would do by then. fr.e ewe.bno.vel .com

She will meet moves with countermoves, treating people the way they treat her.

Since they used live streams to slander her, they couldn’t blame her for fighting back.

Kevin had already planned these things for Jessie on their way here.

"No problem. I have a friend who works in a government agency and can help investigate your cousins’ jobs and income. Once these details are made public, it’ll add more credibility. About the photos taken, you can just go live and talk about what happened back then. If you get stage fright, I can find someone to speak on your behalf. Don’t worry about whether people will see it or not—one of my friends specializes in short video traffic promotion. I’ll just give him a heads-up, and it’ll hit the trending list right away."

Jessie couldn’t help but smile. "Mr. Harper, you think even more thoroughly than I do. Thank you. By the way, you sure do have quite a few friends. Considering that you’re a repairman, it’s quite surprising that you’re acquainted with so many influential people."

He paused and quickly replied, "My boss holds me in high regard, so he often takes me around to meet big shots. Plus, I naturally have a good rapport with people."

She initially nodded, but she was a bit suspicious after hearing the latter part.

Seeing her skepticism, he didn’t know how to explain. After all, most of his friends were influential figures he had known since childhood. They had continued to contact each other because they understood him.

Other people might avoid him altogether upon seeing his face, let alone dare to befriend him.

Jessie saw Kevin in serious contemplation, laughing out as she patted his shoulder.

"I’m just asking casually. I’m grateful you’re willing to use your connections to help me.

"Those people are too selfish, thinking I have no back-up and that I could be manipulated like this. I refuse to let them think I’m easily intimidated!

"I doubt that, with all the evidence laid out, they would still dare to lie with their eyes wide open!"

She was brimming with confidence, not worried about what those people might do.

"Why don’t you find some people from your hometown to speak on your behalf? They should know what happened back then; more voices would be more convincing."

Jessie shook her head. "They wouldn’t help us. We’ve been gone so long, and my cousins are more successful than I am. If they were so kind-hearted, they wouldn’t have stayed silent back then."
