Chapter 246: No One Touches Their Family
"Was it last Thursday?" Marcella asked Joey.
They went out on a date and Mary told them Joey answered a call. He had gone to bed that night without even having dinner.
"...Yes," Joey answered.
Tony let out a sigh and pulled him closer. "Son, why didn’t you talk to us about it immediately? Why did you keep it in your heart for days?"
Joey bowed his head. "I thought Aunt Beth was pulling my leg at first but then... I...I am sorry..." he said.
"You don’t have to be sorry for anything, Joey," Marcella said.
There is someone else who should feel sorry.
"I am truly fine. I was confused at first but my teacher explained how every family is different," Joey said. "I now understand. I am grateful for you."
"You talked to your teacher about this?" Marcella asked.
She was a little hurt that he could talk to his teacher about it but not to them.
"No, some boys in my class were teasing another boy for being an adopted child and the teacher warned the bullies... I know. Not all families are the same," Joey said.
"Mom, I am not heartbroken or anything. I wouldn’t have mentioned anything to you but I thought you might want to know now that Aunt Beth has caused another trouble to our family," Joey said.
"You know?" Tony asked.
He was not pleased with that. Marcella too was shocked. They were planning on keeping this from the kids. She didn’t think they could understand the nuances. They were too young.
"I know Dad didn’t cheat on Mom," Joey said.
Marcella coughed as she swallowed down the wrong hole. She didn’t think that Joey would be this open.
"Did your teacher teach you about this too?" Tony asked.
Kids these days know a lot.
"No, one of my classmate’s parents divorced because his Dad cheated on his Mom," Joey blinked. "He told us that his parents had been fighting for a long time and they recently agreed to divorce. He wants to live with his father but his mother wants to have him and..." Joey looked at them with eyes wide.
"We need not worry about choosing to live with you or Mom, right, Dad? If so, we all would be devastated," he said.
"We are not fighting," Tony said.
Marcella rubbed his head. "Your father and I love each other very much. I trust your Dad and he trusts me. We are not separating. I promise."
Joey’s eyes got clear after Marcella said that. "Then I will leave you to it. Love you, Mom. Love you, Dad," he said and ran upstairs.
There was a skip to his step as he rushed up. He must feel light after getting his doubts cleared.
Marcella’s smile disappeared immediately after Joey’s face disappeared. She started laughing.
"I thought she wanted you..." Marcella couldn’t believe Beth talked to their son trying to alienate him from them. "She even came for my kids..."
"I told you she was madly jealous of you," Tony said. He didn’t want to say ’I told you so’ to her, but he couldn’t help it. His wife was dumb in this issue; just a little dumb.
He had realized it on their first meeting and it took her this long to understand.
"So what does she want? My family? She had a family. She left them to become a star. Now she want to take my family? I don’t understand," Marcella said.
She was too confused to be mad.
"She does not want what you have, Birdie," Tony pulled her to sit on his lap. "She wants to destroy what you have."
Marcella blinked her eyes. "Mmm..." she leaned on his shoulder. She couldn’t say anything more even though she tried to think. Tony was right about it.
"You are right," she agreed. She never had the ego to not accept when she was wrong.
Tony kissed her neck. He loved how simple she was. He had heard men advise that the wife was always right. His wife never let him believe that phrase. Maybe in some silly things, yes, but never on important issues. She never shied away from admitting the truth. It made it easy for him to admit when he was wrong too; God knows he was wrong at times too.
"What a nasty woman. I don’t even feel guilty for setting her up," Marcella added.
Tony chuckled. "So, now what are you going to do?" he asked.
She was silent for a long time and she was warm to touch. He knew she was planning something. She gets warmer if she is thinking deeply.
"Tony, arrange a prime-time interview with that... with someone who has the most viewers," she said and stood up. "I didn’t want to let it get this far, but she started it."
"Who is getting interviewed?" Tony asked.
It was not hard for him to arrange for an interview. He wondered if she was going to give an interview. It would definitely go well.
"See when Mr. McNaught would be free this week..." Marcella winked her eyes. Tony’s eyes lit up with excitement.
He might have killed Beth thinking that would have ended everything. But that won’t change the accusation against him. His wife was right that they needed to take Tony to court. Although she hadn’t named him openly, there might be ways to get the law on their side.
While they attack Beth legally, her husband would attack her emotionally. Beth thinks a lot of powerful men are on her side. But she thought wrong. None of them would go against him and his wife; everyone’s scared of Marcella’s secret backer.
She has money but who will take her money and take a stance against the powers that be? No one’s self-destructive.
Beth is finished.
Marcella smirked. She had been in contact with Beth’s husband for years. He so wanted to bring Beth down for breaking his family. He married another woman but he still was hurt by what Beth did in the past. He lived in a small town and people still mock him because his wife left him.
He also wanted a finger in the pie. Beth is worth millions, after all. He wants his children to have a share as compensation for leaving them.
His kids were over twenty by now and even they are unhappy that their mother had entirely lied about her past in the interviews. She made it appear that she was from a well-off family in the South when she was a farmer’s daughter who slept her way up.
All of Beth’s lies would be unraveled and she would fall from grace faster than she got there.
Oh, Beth... You shouldn’t have come after my family. You will pay!
