Flash Marriage: Shrewd Wife, Devious Husband -
Chapter 242: The Phone Call
Chapter 242: The Phone Call
With the TV still on, she walked to the phone and brought it to the living room. Her kids were all asleep. She was the only one awake in the house. She had already asked security to keep the gates locked and not to let anyone inside their property.
She knew the reporters would be there in case Tony didn’t give a statement immediately.
"Birdie..."
Tony’s voice was sunken as he spoke.
"Show’s on..." Marcella increased the volume a bit. "Do you have the TV on?" she asked.
Tony hummed. "Yes."
"Let’s watch together," Marcella said in a soft tone. She wished he was sitting beside her but this was close enough.
Behind the scenes, during the break, the host must have talked to Beth about whether she wanted to continue the topic or not. Her publicist and manager wouldn’t have liked that she confessed to cheating with a married politician.
"Love is love," Beth said, clearly willing to continue the conversation.
The host went visibly pale.
"She is doubling down," Marcella said.
There was no sound from Tony’s side. She figured that he was waiting for her reaction before saying anything. She made it clear that she was not mad at him by still on the call with him. He should know it.
"I still love him and am willing to do anything for him," Beth added.
"Why now?" the host asked.
"I don’t know..." Beth shrugged and looked at the floor in a forlorn gaze. Her beautiful features glowing in the warm lighting invoked a sense of pity toward her as her lips curved. She looked as an innocent flower holding the aftermath of a storm.
"Maybe because... I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I needed to...be true to my heart," Beth said.
The host asked her about the repercussions of the action and if she was willing to face it. Beth just smiled and said nothing to it. She looked like a pitiful teenager who was trapped in a gilded cage.
The host didn’t probe into her accusation anymore and changed the topic about her new movie and her experience working with everyone. Then there was another guest in the show who worked with Beth in the movie.
"Chris says he was instructed to wait...?" Tony asked with doubt.
Although Beth hadn’t revealed his name, she gave enough clues. The papers will print his name in the morning papers. He wanted to end that immediately.
Marcella had other plans. That’s why she asked the legal team to hold on to their statement.
"Your name is not out. Are you going to put words in their mouth by releasing a statement first?" Marcella asked.
Tony let out a deep breath. "The papers are going to reach out before sending the article to print asking for comments. I have to give a statement."
"Chris already has a statement for that. He will say that Beth is a friend of mine and that was the extent of her relationship with you and that you are as surprised as everyone else as to why Beth said those egregious things. The statement will also mention that you are hoping that it was all a misunderstanding," Marcella said.
She said it all to Tony because she didn’t want him yelling at their lawyer. Chris too didn’t understand why she wanted to give such a polite statement.
"But, Birdie!" Tony’s voice got high because of annoyance. "Birdie... I don’t have to explain myself to you, do I?" he asked.
"You think I am doubting you?" Marcella asked.
"This could ruin my career, Birdie. My whole image is being a family man. I cannot be rumored with some actress!"
Marcella chuckled. "Well, you’ve kept your promises. People are not going to throw you away just because of some rumors..."
There was silence for some time. No one talked. She could hear Tony’s breathing through the phone. He must eb stressed and angry.
"Come home, Tony. Don’t talk to reporters and come to me," she said.
She didn’t like that he was suffering alone. Also, it wouldn’t be good if he didn’t come home that night. Rumors would start to spread.
"It’s not right..." Tony said. His voice was tired. "I never wanted her anywhere around me..."
"You are blaming me," Marcella said.
He didn’t say it but he implied it.
"A little, yes," Tony said.
He didn’t want to lie to her.
Marcella laughed. What else could she do? They must be one odd couple. If something like this happened to any other couple, they probably would be arguing whether the man cheated or not, or they would be trying to bury the scandal in any way possible.
Here they are... calm.
"Ten years ago, Tony, when I told you that you need not talk to me about Beth, I’ve already planned for today. So, dear husband, come home to me and warm my bed," she said.
She didn’t hear Tony’s heavy breathing anymore and although she couldn’t see it, she knew he was smiling; she imagined that sweet smile on his face that she fell for.
Tony came home. Just like she asked, he didn’t answer any reporters and asked them to contact his lawyer.
Some wanted to use this chance to stop him from ascending into the political arena. Tony just told him to wait and see how he came out of it.
The next day, every paper published the scandal Beth herself talked about in the interview. Because of that, Beth’s new movie got a great promotion as they mentioned that she gave an interview for the promotion of the movie.
Some said it was just a cheap tactic but others doubted Tony’s integrity. An affair between a powerful man and a beautiful actress was not something unheard of and people found it entertaining to talk about it.
Some believed Beth and some hated her. Everyone was talking about it.
Tony didn’t want to go to work and he asked the boys to stay at home. Their house was surrounded by reporters.
In the morning, Marcella was at the dining table eating breakfast. Tony had prepared breakfast for everyone that morning.
The phone rang.
"Right at nine," Marcella smirked looking at the clock.
"You’re expecting a call?" Tony asked.
Marcella nodded. Sending the kids away, she answered the call.
"Yes, hello, Beth. How are you doing?"
Tony picked up a jar of roasted peanuts and sat on the counter to watch her. He was intrigued.
