Chapter 240: Negotiation
"But Tony..." Marcella with a pout scooted closer to him. The glass of wine she drank started to act and she was feeling a little drowsy.
"What?" Tony with a smile let her lean on his shoulder. He knew what she will do next. He took in a deep breath to harden his heart. Whenever she leaned on him like that he would feel like he would bring the world to his feet. But he couldn’t give in to her wish this time.
Marcella didn’t open up immediately. She needed to tune him properly before she expressed her one great wish. She placed her hand on his abdomen and rubbed it with her hand. His abdomen was not as firm as it was when she met him again.
She touched her belly. Even though she reduced her weight after each childbirth, her belly had a mind on its own. It was not as flat as it was before. It was all wrinkly with stretch marks and felt like a pouch.
That was the only thing she regretted about after having all the kids. The ladies in the political circle talked about getting surgery and joining a gym for their "health" but Marcella didn’t feel the need to go that far.
Tony always kissed her little pouch-belly. He would have an admiring smile when he caressed her belly. "This is proof that you’ve lived your life. This is proof you’ve given me the utmost happiness in life," he would say.
Marcella knew he said that from his heart. It was amazing they grew old together. They’re only half-way through life. She wished to go through the rest with him by her side.
"Tony..." she said after a while.
"Yes, honey..." Tony kissed her head.
He loved it when she rubbed his belly. After being a successful politician, he had been relegated to a desk job. He was not handling the "side business" directly either. Combined with his travels often and eating outside, he had gained some weight, enough for his wife to have noticed. But she never complained about it.
"Tony... let’s try once more. Just once more..." she said. Her voice went low as she was scared to bring up that topic.
"Birdie... you know what I am going to say..." Tony said softly. This was a big disagreement between them but he didn’t find the need to argue with her. He was not going to change his decision either.
She was forty already and her last childbirth was very tough. She had a tendency to forget all the pain after she saw the baby, but he could never forget. She almost died; they rolled her to emergency C-Section before the baby finally came out.
She cannot risk her life anymore.
"Why do you want a girl anyway?" he asked. Their house is crowded as it was. Why add another member?
"You don’t understand, Tony," she looked at him with a pout. "I am outnumbered 6 to 1. You have your alone time with your boys but I have no one... If I had a girl, she would accompany me to shopping, spa and she would gossip with me...My mom and sister are dead and I... I want a daughter..."
As she was speaking, her eyes watered. She really wanted a girl. She wanted someone she could be close with. She was never a girly girl growing up and she missed the togetherness with her sister. If her sister was alive now, she would have had a plenty of good times with her.
Tony hugged her. "You can go with Mrs. Butler and her daughters," he said.
"I love her but her daughters are not my daughters. And Gloria does not have time for this. She is homesteading and doesn’t have off time." Marcella lied through her teeth to garner Tony’s sympathy. She does visit the spa with Gloria.
"Liar!" Tony pinched her waist. He knew she visited the spa with Gloria Butler and they often go shopping together. Also, she goes shopping with that actress too.
Marcella yelped. "It still is not fair. You have five boys to your side while I am all alone!" she said.
"Who said you’re alone?" Tony furrowed his brows. He didn’t like it when she threw out such words carelessly. He knew she was throwing it out carelessly right now because she was trying to guilt-trip him.
She surely is well suited to be a politician’s wife, but she was not as good as him. He could get stubborn when it came to her wellbeing.
"You have me. It’s never going to be 6 on 1. It will always be us against them, even if they are our own kids. Never forget that. You’re not some helpless woman. You are the queen in this house. We all are here to serve you. So, forget about having another child."
Marcella wouldn’t lie. She was touched. Her heart was pounding seeing the seriousness on his face. He just made her a promise. And he will keep his promise as long as her heart beat.
"But you get to raise boys..."
"I’ll leave it to you then," Tony shrugged.
"But, Tony..." Marcella pouted. "I cannot handle boys. I am delicate like a~"
Before she even finished, Tony started to laugh. "Delicate what? You can handle tattooed men but not our boys?" he pinched her cheeks. "If it gets hard for you, I’ll get you a horse whip. You can beat them to get them in line," he said, still laughing.
Marcella curled her lips. As if she would have the heart to hit her little boys. They are angels. Why would anyone want to hit them to discipline them?
Tony smiled seeing her mumbling under her breath. She waddled her way to the kitchen. He followed her with the wine glass and helped her clean up the kitchen. She was glaring at her the whole time but he let her.
They’ve been together for too long to go to bed angry. They knew they meant the world to each other.
"When is the announcement?" Marcella asked. To her knowledge Tony was going to announce about him running for Senate the next day.
"Tomorrow," Tony kissed her hugging around her waist.
"Beth is going live for an interview in a couple of days. When was the last time she contacted you?" Marcella asked. Her eyebrows were furrowed.
Tony raised his eyebrows. "I don’t keep tags on that. Bernard would know," Tony said.
Marcella let out a deep sigh. How careless! "Prepare a legal statement," Marcella said and walked to the stairs.
"Legal statement? About what?" Tony didn’t get head or tails. "Isn’t she your friend? Did she cheat on you?" he couldn’t help but quip sarcastically.
Marcella turned to look at him. "I’ll talk to your lawyer," she said and walked upstairs.
"What do you know?" Tony followed her.
