Chapter 221: The Biker Gang
Election day was nearing. Tony was busy with the last round of the campaign. As much as Marcella wanted to travel with him, she couldn’t. She helped him in other ways possible.
Since he was running as the relatable one, Marcella suggested coming grocery shopping with her. Of course, there were cameras around and it was going to be used as a campaign advert. Marcella gave that idea and everyone loved it.
Marcella purposefully went to the same store she visited. She still did her shopping herself and she was acquainted with the staff there. Tony too was not a stranger to shopping as he helped her at times.
Marcella had a lot planned, but once she entered the store, she forgot about the cameras and acted as she usually do. Some people were wary of the cameras but others chatted with Marcella jovially. Marcella didn’t fail to remind them to vote for her husband and she got good responses.
Tony checked the product and the percentage of taxes they paid and took mental notes of everything. Marcella wondered if he had come up with a plan to reduce taxes. Everyone who earned enough to pay taxes would be happy to get the taxes reduced.
As they were getting out, Marcella almost jumped in fright seeing the bunch of motorcycles turning up in the parking lot. The men riding those bikes looked rough and were loud. The leather jackets, the cigarettes, and the loud behavior instilled fear in the hearts of many, and many quietly scampered away.
Even Marcella who was used to loud, rough-looking men was a little scared of them. Most of them were carrying and she knew they would belong to a gang judging by the tattoos. Some of them had tattoos on their faces even.
Marcella looked at Tony. Although she didn’t feel very safe, Tony didn’t find the need to protect her.
Does he know them?
Marcella watched as Tony walked straight to the man walking in the front with a cigarette in his mouth. He was wearing a leather jacket and his shirt was open. His chest was covered in tattoos. His long mullet swayed in the wind as he removed the bandana he was wearing.
"Tony! My man!"
That burly man hugged Tony and patted his back hard.
Marcella blinked her eyes.
So, he does know them. But ... how?
She didn’t know how Tony made acquaintance with a biker gang. He must have made their acquaintance during his campaign tour. She didn’t know what to think of it.
Tony introduced Marcella to him. "This is my wife, Marcella," he placed his hand on the small of her back and helped her to stand by his side.
"This is Mike from..."
"The Rolling Angels?" Marcella smiled. She had read the patch on the jacket of every one of the members and she figured that that must be the name of the gang.
"Your lady is smart," Mike held out his hand.
Marcella shook his hand without any qualms. If Tony found them safe to be introduced to her, she didn’t mind them either. What she learned right from a young age was that appearances can be deceiving. The ones with rough exteriors are not always bad and the ones with a smart appearance are not always good.
Although, she did believe in stereotypes a little.
Tony placed his hand on her back. "Mike met me after he learned that I was your husband. He had been following your fight for Natalie," he paused as Mike wanted to speak.
"We’ve been offering our help for victims of abuse if they accept our help, especially against child predators," Mike said.
"They are amazing," Tony continued. "They stand guard around the houses of the victims in cases where the accused are violent."
"That is amazing!" Marcella’s eyes widened with joy. "The cops won’t be of much help as they don’t have that many resources. Mike, you are doing the Lord’s work. I surely will introduce you to Natalie. She is brave but she is shaken by everything happening around her."
"If she wants to, we can stand guard in her house and also we can escort her in and out of the court," Mike said.
"Thank you, Mike!" Marcella held his hand. She would have hugged him if her belly wasn’t protruding too much.
"Thank you, everyone!" she nodded at the twenty-odd people behind Mike. They all smiled at her from their heart.
On their way back, Marcella couldn’t conceal her glee.
"How did you find them?" Marcella asked Tony.
Tony explained how they blocked the road. As they were ready for confrontation, the gang leader hesitantly talked about what their gang was about.
"They knew you, Marcella," Tony smiled. There was pride dancing on his face. "Everyone knows you. I am getting a lot of respect because of you. Not because of who your father was, but because of who you are."
"Is that good?" she asked.
She was too young to attain that height and she knew Tony was exaggerating. She was nothing compared to her father.
"Of course, it is!" Tony held her hand. "How could you doubt that?"
"You have no idea how many townspeople came to see me just because I am your husband. And your friend’s husband brought some people..."
Tony continued with the stories. Marcella listened to him happily. She would have loved to see the great reception her husband had, but hearing the stories was all she could do for now.
After getting home, Marcella contacted Natalie and talked about the biker gang that was willing to help. Natalie was a little scared to trust other men, but Marcella arranged a meeting with Mike to help Natalie see what kind of people they were.
It needs love in the heart to have the courage to stand up for the weak. Those rough people had love and courage. She respected them.
Natalie too was relieved after talking to Mike. There were some women in the gang too and that gave her more courage to let them help her.
In the later stages of the trial, the aura in the courtroom changed with the presence of the leather-jacket-wearing, cigarette-smoking ruffians. Rourke’s lawyer was scared to accuse Natalie as a part of his arguments. With the involvement of the biker gang, the case got more coverage in the press.
The dreaded day of the election came. Marcella went with Tony to cast her vote. She thanked everyone who worked with her husband through this.
Although the exit polls were unreliable, as far as the information collected, the opposite party was leading by fifteen points. It was a devastating news to hear.
Marcella hugged Tony and asked him to be confident. They’ve done everything they can. They cannot do anything anymore.
On the day of the counting, Tony was ready to leave the house.
Then it happened...
