Chapter 217: A Party
Chapter 217: A Party
Tony went to their bedroom. His heart was pounding and his palms had gone cold. For a moment, he saw the same expression he saw on her face on that day under the maple tree—disgust.
It was his fault for hiding what happened that day. It was out of his hand and he didn’t know how to handle it. Whatever it was, it was his fault. He was not going to deny that.
He didn’t expect she would handle it this way though.
If Beth didn’t tell him about the meeting either, how did she know? Who told her?
Someone must be spying on me on her behalf. Does she not trust me?
He took a deep breath before entering their bedroom. On the way to their home, his heart was fluttering with excitement. He had a lot of plans. But now everything appeared dark and gloomy. Every happiness was wiped out with her one question.
The tone she used... Sigh!
He walked in, to see Marcella sitting on the bed. She was rubbing her hand cream. Only the night lamp was on and she was glowing. Looking at him, she smiled.
Tony was stunned. She was smiling from her heart.
Are we over it already?
"Tony..." she held out her hand and he walked closer.
"Do you want anything?" she asked.
"No," he said and sat beside her.
He didn’t have the guts to look at her face and looked at the floor. It was then he noticed her swollen legs. His heart skipped a beat. He forgot about everything else.
"What is this?" he knelt in front of her and held her leg. "Should we see a doctor?" he asked.
Marcella chuckled. "No, it’s normal. The baby is fine. Do you want to feel the kicks?" she asked.
Tony nodded. Marcella held his cheek and kissed him. He was looking at her with bewilderment. She didn’t care. Holding his hand, she placed it over her belly.
"See... The baby likes your voice, I think. He’s so excited ever since you came back. He’s not stopping...Ah..." she let out a deep breath. "I don’t know how I am going to fall asleep today."
"He?" Tony asked and sat beside her. "Why are you calling our girl a he?"
He didn’t like that. But what right did he have to correct her? She was the one putting in all the effort. He was not even present to support her. She could call the baby whatever she wanted to.
"I don’t know..." Marcella chuckled. Whenever she talked about the baby, she called it a ’he’. "’He’ feels...right..." she said.
She didn’t fail to notice the disappointment on his face. He covered his disappointment with a smile, sat by her foot, and started massaging her legs.
Marcella wanted to talk further, but she loved his massage. Before she knew it, she fell asleep. Tony wanted to talk to her for some time, especially about the phone call he received, but he didn’t want to wake her up.
Scooting closer to her, he gently caressed her face. With the movement of his fingers, her lips curved up and he placed a kiss on her cheek. His lips curved up too. The confusion he had earlier had disappeared and his heart settled with peace.
Taking in her scent, cuddling her, he fell asleep.
In the morning, Tony woke up to dim light. He thought it would be still early. The curtains were drawn and the room was silent. He was surprised to see her side of the bed empty. He wanted to prepare breakfast for her but she woke up early.
He went to Joey’s room only to see it empty too. He checked the time only then. It was ten in the morning. Tony couldn’t believe he slept for that long. He opened the curtains to the blinding lights.
After freshening up, he went searching for her. She was in the kitchen on the phone talking to somebody. Seeing him, her face bloomed and she ended the call almost immediately.
"I’ll make some pancakes for you," she smiled at him.
"No, wait..." Tony walked to her and grabbed her hand to force her to sit.
It was hard for him to watch her walking around with that big belly.
"The doctor advised me to walk around. Mary also says it’s best to be active during the pregnancy since I don’t have any other complication," Marcella said.
Tony pressed his lips. He should have known all these. If he had gone to the doctor’s appointment with her, he would have known all these. She probably talked to him about it over the phone, but he didn’t remember hearing her say it.
He felt like a failure.
"When I am near, you can rest," he kissed her cheek and forced her to sit. "Did you eat?" he asked.
Marcella nodded. "I am eating on time these days. Otherwise, I get gastritis."
Tony nodded. "Good..."
He was glad she was taking care of herself. But what other choice does she have? Only she could take care of herself. No one else could. She had a useless husband.
"I forgot to tell you this. I was told that it is necessary to arrange a campaign party to keep everyone from the party happy. I~"
"Is that necessary now?" Tony asked. "The party didn’t even support me as they promised they would."
He didn’t think they could arrange a party now. He wanted to spend some time with Marcella and Joey. The party would take a lot of time and effort. Marcella was in her third trimester and she wouldn’t be able to host a party.
Marcella rolled her eyes. "But they want the party to revel in false praises and adoration. We have to give them what they want," she said.
Her father hated these types of things, but Tony is in politics and parties are part and parcel of that world.
"I’ve already made arrangements. The food...I need to contact the caterer once more, and the~"
"I’ll arrange for someone else to make all the arrangements," Tony said.
She had no need to work that hard during this time for him.
"But they would expect me to make all the arrangements. I know what this is Tony. This is a test. They want to see if I would be a "proper" wife of a politician. I need to prove myself to them," Marcella said.
That’s how she felt when she got informed of the wishes of the higher-ups.
Tony fidgeted with his fingers.
"Do you even like doing this, Marcella?" he asked.
