Chapter 210: The Surprising Proposal
Chapter 210: The Surprising Proposal
Marcella was surprised Harley started the call with the usual pleasantries. He talked about the weather and asked about the weather in their city.
Marcella sat comfortably on the counter. It looked like this call would last a while.
Harley then asked about Tony’s health. He mentioned the attempt on his life by Paul Romano.
"I didn’t think Romano had it in him," Harley laughed.
Marcella pressed her lips. It didn’t look like he was shocked by the terrible thing Romano did. He was more shocked that Romano had it in him to do that.
What a douchebag!
Romano probably had a good relationship with Harley. It only increased doubt that Harley had something to do with her father’s death.
"How are you coping?" Harley asked next without letting Tony answer. "Did you celebrate his death or did you grieve for your father’s loss?"
Marcella wetted her lips and looked at Tony. Harley knew the truth.
"Whatever," Harley continued. Again, it seemed like Harley wanted to make his point across rather than have a conversation with Tony.
Was it because of Tony’s age or was it something more?
"Before I come to the point, I want to congratulate you on your second child. Or should I call it your first considering your first child is your brother’s? Whatever! Congrats."
Harley said in a flat tone. Marcella shouldn’t have been surprised that he knew it but she didn’t want to lie. She was surprised. Harley did have a long reach to know her medical records.
She needed to change her doctor. This news wouldn’t have slipped from her side. Not many even knew about it. It should be the doctor’s office or someone who works there. She didn’t want to take a chance anyway.
Harley was just talking in a flat tone but she understood it was a veiled threat. He was bragging that nothing was a secret for them and he could attack them where they would hurt—he could hurt their little family.
Marcella was surprised Tony held his cool through all of Harley’s provocative words. He must have wanted to stay calm until he knew what that call was about.
Harley continued, this time, he was a little displeased although he tried to be flat-toned as before. "I was told of your intents. Those are great aspirations. I was told you had the capability. You helped greatly in Feldstein’s campaign, I hear? He talked greatly about you."
"Thank you..." Tony spoke in the same tone Harley spoke. "I do want to run." He stated his wish. He wouldn’t get a chance without the permission of those in the higher-ups. He can run as an independent candidate but it won’t be fruitful.
"You must be something..." Harley let out a scoff. "In a short amount of time, you managed to get David Schmidt and the Mellon family’s support. Times used to be different when I wanted to enter politics. Back then, no one trusted us unless we... Your marriage with DeAngelo’s daughter paid off well, huh?" he sneered.
Marcella was annoyed. Nothing irked her more than when someone implied that her husband succeeded because of her. He had an innate talent and even before she met him, he held a great position.
Tony placed his finger on his lips, gesturing for her not to say a word.
"It did," Tony said.
Even before the marriage, he got all the benefits because of his association with Don DeAngelo. Even his law degree was a gift from Don DeAngelo. He had no qualms agreeing to that statement.
"Can’t blame you..." Harley’s voice softened a bit. "She’s smart. I heard she gained support in your district. The local volunteers all knew her by name and loved the way she included our party name to the charity work she does... For the first time in this century, they are saying that our party has a chance of winning."
"She does what she loves to do," Tony said. Pride was dancing on his face. He loved hearing others talking highly of his wife. She deserves it.
"I’ll come straight to the point," Harley’s voice turned serious. "The representatives of our party all feel like it would be a better optics considering the feminist movements, to let your wife run without a primary in your home district. What do you say?"
Marcella’s heart skipped a beat. She did not see that coming!
Tony with a smirk looked at her and raised his brows. "What do you think, Sir?" he asked. But in fact, he was asking her.
Marcella shook her head and made the cut-throat gesture. "No!!!" she mouthed. "No f*cking way!!!"
That was not in her to-do list. It was never her dream. Never. She wouldn’t function well in that setting and she would resent her life if she had to do that much paperwork.
"I don’t think it’s wise to let Joseph DeAngelo’s daughter run in an election," Harley said. "I’m saying this because you asked. I think you would be more suited considering your experience. She can stand behind you like every other wife does," he added.
This, Marcella very much agreed on. She would love to stand behind her husband and be his support.
She gave the thumbs-up signal to Tony only to see the darkness on his face. He was not agreeing with a single word Harley said.
Marcella placed her hands together. "Please, Tony..." she pleaded.
Please, take this chance!
Becoming a politician was not her dream. It was his. When he gets the chance, he should utilize it. He shouldn’t get offended on her behalf when even she wasn’t offended.
"I’m the man, aren’t I?" Tony said wryly.
"You got my point. Smart!" Harley laughed. "The day after you turn thirty, fill in the application. Don’t bother about the funding. The party will take care of everything. One more thing, tell your wife to proceed on her current thing. That DA needs to be taught a lesson."
"Thank you," Tony slammed the phone back on the holder.
Marcella immediately cut her line too.
"Misogynistic old fart!" Tony cussed. "Who is he to tell me to order my wife around? Who does he think he is? "Little thing"? Little thing? What is a little thing? Bastard!!1"
Marcella walked to him and hugged him. Technically, she should be the one getting angry for the way that man spoke, but since her husband was getting mad for her sake, she didn’t find the need to.
"My pooor baby..." she hugged him and kissed his chin. "Don’t be mad. You should be celebrating. Also, you have a lot of work ahead of you."
Tony calmed down a little and patted her head.
He did have a lot of work ahead.
