Chapter 187: Misunderstanding
"Marcella..."
Uncle Karl called her and Marcella decided to leave. She had a strong feeling that John played a major role in her release today but that didn’t mean she could be open with him about everything—especially, something that would put her in jail and her family’s life in danger.
John was still blocking her and she patted his arm to let her go. She didn’t want to talk to him in here.
"Let’s meet later, John," she smiled and took a step forward.
Let me leave, please...
"You didn’t answer me," John held her arm and leaned closer to her. He was in her face. She tried to take a step back but he pulled her closer. His messy fringes fell on her forehead. "Did he suffer enough?" he asked again, his voice breaking.
Marcella blinked. Her heart sank seeing the desperation on his face. He was in pain and she didn’t know how to help him. She definitely didn’t want to put her life in jeopardy by talking about it at a police station. But she understood John’s desperation too. Maybe he was feeling helpless not knowing what to do to avenge the death of his first love and now that someone else did what he wanted to do, he had a mixture of emotions.
"Agent Emerson, Mrs. Crawford needs to leave right now," Uncle Karl spoke in a deep crisp voice that snapped John out of his reverie.
He took in a sharp inhale and took a step back. "I’m sorry..." he released her and put his hands up. Rubbing his cheeks, he leaned on the wall. "Mrs. Crawford, let’s meet later," he nodded.
Marcella nodded with a smile. Letting out a sigh of relief, she joined Uncle Karl. Uncle Karl turned and glared at John and John mouthed ’sorry’. Marcella didn’t understand what that was about.
"I thought you would get me quicker," she told Uncle Karl.
"They didn’t let me in. If not for Emerson, I wouldn’t have gotten one foot inside the station. The powers be, want you gone." He sighed.
Marcella didn’t say anything. She knew Paul made friends in a lot of places and with the Mellon family’s support, Andrew could be a worthy opponent.
Uncle Karl opened the door for her and Marcella sat in the back seat. She took a peek at the driver and it was Christopher and she smiled at him.
"Good riddance," he gave a controlled smile and Marcella grinned ear to ear.
Chris’ smile vanished the moment Uncle Karl got in the car though. Marcella too donned a serious face.
"Andrew Mellon is Paul Romano’s son," she said.
"What!" Chris cried in surprise.
Uncle Karl struggled to look at her and she scooted to sit in the middle of the seat. "Mark Paulo told me."
"Did you kill Mark too?" Chris asked.
Uncle Karl cleared his throat and Chris shrugged. He then started driving.
"Take me to Tony," she told Chris and he nodded. "Mark... he was already hurt when I went there. And... Andrew was there. I saw him leaving. He shot at us. Mark saved me..." Marcella looked down.
Her eyes watered thinking about it. Then it clicked her.
"Uncle," she held his shoulder. "Did you know Mark was a double agent in Paul’s camp? He testified against Dad and yet~"
"He was following Don’s orders, Bambi. Don wanted to keep it a secret. Only I knew it. Controlled opposition..." Uncle Karl turned to look at her. "Mark knew enough to put your father behind bars for a hundred years. Did you think it was a fluke that your father was never convicted?" he smirked.
Marcella was tongue-tied. All this time, she thought that one of her father’s best men betrayed him and probably killed him. But that too was her father’s plan? Father asked Mark to be an informant to the police. Mark agreed knowing the risk of double-crossing the FBI.
Mark was that loyal to her father.
It was then Marcella remembered. That day when she went to the Romano residence with a gun in her hand, it was Mark who de-escalated the situation and allowed her to leave. On the day of the reading of the will, Mark controlled his men and he didn’t appreciate them calling her names.
Mark was on her side all the time!
She wanted to get mad at Uncle Karl for keeping that a secret from her. But she knew Uncle Karl was right to keep it from her. She had to play the part of Mark’s cover to work.
"Uncle, will you make sure Mark has a proper funeral? I want to attend his funeral. I know I have to attend Paul’s funeral too but I would love to attend Mark’s funeral. I’ll keep my emotions in check," she asked in a pleading tone.
Uncle Karl nodded after giving it a thought. "Also... Bambi, what was that with Emerson earlier?" he asked.
His furrowed brows and pressed lips made Marcella’s heart skip a beat. She felt like a little kid getting caught red-handed but she didn’t understand what she was afraid of. Uncle Karl had that aura about him that made her shiver in fear even if she didn’t do anything wrong.
Uncle Karl was disappointed that she didn’t get what he meant.
"Did something happen? I didn’t tell him anything. He might be wired or someone might be listening..." She paused seeing Chris shrinking in his seat, hearing his father’s grunt. She realized that she said something wrong although she didn’t think so. Uncle Karl might be thinking that she gave the wrong answer.
"It’s not good for married women to have a closer relationship with someone of the opposite gender. First, it was your husband, and now~"
"That’s bullsh*t!" Marcella raised her voice. She didn’t like that Uncle Karl insinuated that there was something between her and John. John was obviously still in love with her sister. How could this misunderstanding happen?
"Meeting him often without your husband and..." Uncle Karl sighed. "I know you, Bambi. I know, but..." he held her hand.
"Agent Emerson was pretty forceful in his word with the commissioner today. The cops never liked Don and they don’t like you either as you’ve taken the people’s side, against the cops. They were laughing insinuating... It’s... I do not want this to affect your marriage, that is all," he patted her hand.
Marcella let out a deep breath.
